    There are some icons in Australia that become almost spiritual and that is how I feel about Think Big. Usual story, I was in Primary School, Dad's workplace sweep chose me two years in a row to back Think Big. Crayfish all round two years running. Unforgettable father and daughter memories.
    To me that horse is more than gambling, he is a symbol of courage and power in the face of adversity, he was 33/1 for his second Melbourne Cup. There is something magical about his victories.
    I have been going thru a tuff time in my life the last six months and found myself calling on old heroes to pull me thru. I was so glad to read about what a wonderful man Harry White was. It is clear to me this horse, who had a pretty modest career otherwise, had a very special bond with Harry. Think Big won two Melbourne Cups because Harry White was a good kind loving man, simple as that. Seems to me that Think Big won because he loved Harry White. Thank you Think Big, thank you Harry RIP you are both Australian heroes in my eyes. Love and Glory upon you both forever.

    totally agree Bren...Harry White was one of the best hoops in his day....great jockey all round but in particular on the stayers.
    I was 8 years old and in 1975 my late father asked me to pick a horse in the cup..YEP...Think Big I said...the rest is history.
    Hooked, a member at the VRC...attend the spring carnivals...love the build up, but when I look back at all the old races it bring back great memories...ones I shared with my dad.
    My first cup was in 1976...my father took me...the BIG WET...Van Der Hum with Bob Skelton.
    First time and only time when stewards nearly cancelled the race...watch on you tube

    HARRY WHITE was the greatest Jockey to ever ride in Australia . He could of won 5 MELBOURNE CUPS . He won 2113 races in his 34 year career one of only 4 Jockeys to ever win more then 2,000 races . He also won 69 group 1 races and 243 featured/ group race wins and came 1st place in the Jockeys premierships 4 times and second place 11 times . 1st or 2 nd for 15 years in a row . HARRY WHITE also has won the AUSTRALIAN CUP a record 5 times . I have met him as well as he was so nice to me . GO HARRY WHITE best jockey ever.

    There are two Cups when I wish the second horse had won. This is one, Gurner's Lane's Cup is the other.

      Leilani was a great mare, and so was Kingston Town. Tend to agree about the latter.

    • @filipina5953
      @filipina5953 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      emmelby - Yes Sadly Kingston Town finished second to Gurner’s Lane in 1982 by a Long Neck from memory. Should have won, but the Histor6 book shows that L. Dittman crossed the line in First Place. Mick Dittman I believe is the Greatest Jockey this country 🇦🇺 has produced, and he is the reason Gurner’s Lane won on the day. A masterful ride by “The Enforcer”, by only leaving the running rail, to pass other horses. That was the Winning margin in the Finish. I’m a Great follower of Riding Techniques, and Dittman had a Style all of his own, a style that I have never seen equaled anywhere around the world since. A couple who are up there are - Shane Dye (Beautifully Balanced rider), and rode much shorter (Stirrup) than anyone I’ve ever seen, and Joao Moreira who is another, he has Beautiful Hands and horses tend to “Run” for him, Pat Hyland from yesteryear (won 1985 Melbourne Cup on What A Nuisance) And Current day Victorian Jockey Noel Callow, are 2 of the best. “Hands + Heels” riders I can ever remember. Checkout Hyland’s ride in the 1985 Melbourne Cup. 🐎🏆🇦🇺

    At 3:02 Think Big nearly fell, about 250m out, as Harry White went for a gap that closed. He had to stall to stay on his feet. A remarkable win in the circumstances.

    Battle Heights went within 200 meters of winning that. I remember it as it having momentarily reached the lead early in the home straight, but it actually did more than that. It kicked for a bit and opened up a bit of a break there. I'd have taken decent odds against it winning that. I did not like it at all for that.
