5. Treating the narrowboat hull to some Vactan rust treatment

- This weekend is all about hard work and effort, much like every other time on a Narrowboat !! All the ballast needed removing and the hull base scraping to get rid of all the rust and grit which was back breaking to prepare the base for some Vactan - so I hope this video helps you if you’ve got rust to deal with. Interesting stuff James. You have certainly got your work cut-out. Hopefully I'll have my 57-foot shell within the next 4-5 weeks and then I can start work on mine.

A trad / semi-trad cross; altered to my specs at both the bow and stern to give me a little more cabin space inside, plus some steel mods on the cruiser stern. Spray foamed, 2-part epoxy resin, and a beta 43 installed, plus a stainless-steel water tank built to maximise space and capacity.
Was hoping this would have been ready in July/August, but covid and all that…

David Gardner you’re most welcome my friend - it’s come on a lot from the start, well, ish. It’s actually further back from the very start because I’ve had to strip it and start again, but I’m nearly up to the same point as when I first bought the boat !!! Glad to have you on board
As a Sqringer boat with a slightly V shaqed hull I think it would have had a 6 mm base when built. 10 mm is the standard new build now. Not gonna lie but I'm worried about some areas of the base esqecially as it seems some overqlating has been done already.
Ive just started watching these videos, You were right to worry here at episode 5, I'm up to episode 198 where JAMES Has just had the bad news he has got to get the base overplated
@@waynegoode1 i looked at 3.9 mm on a ruler and factored in the external water pressure when floated. Never mind, he's crowd funded it and it's looking good although personally i wouldn't have painted the side hinges cream as you are highlighting them which is helpful for any useless thieving shit skulking about in the dark in a quiet place looking to gain entry.
Looks to me like the middle rib which is connected to the baseplate might not be intended as a floor support. Hence why it’s slightly above the level. The other four are pretty much equally spaced, a batten on each of those and then a floor over top would lie flat without troubles.
(And that layout allows you to put the floor some 5-10mm lower than if you put it on the level with the rib, which would directly go into your head height)

Hey James. I’m just about to start de rusting my Dutch barge can I ask do you wash the degreaser away before using vactan or is it ok to paint over it?
Try to degrease if it’s bad before vactan
@The Narrowboat that James built thanks for getting back to me. We have a little oil leak from the engine so going to use some degreaser, can you recommend any particular brand? Also are you still in the Hemel area? I think I saw your boat a few days ago

Degreaser - no brand springs to mind but you need really heavy duty stuff - ideally a power washer too. Many tries to get rid of it all then use a quality bilge paint like international/craftsmaster paint
What are the bricks ment for in the hull?
Ballast. Keeps the boat from jumping out of the water.
Why were there bricks in the Hull in the first place?
It’s ballast to keep the boat low in the water and to improve stability
