You are doing a great job. You still have to think about, the place to store your tools. Lol!

My plan was to build a locker in the floor - remove some ballast - put in a plastic box and an access hatch in floor - tada......hidden tool box. I’m planning the same for a drinks store in the kitchen, sorry galley !!

Great vlogs James, so pleased to have found such an informative, quickly progressing, ground up narrowboat project. I’m surprised how much flex a narrowboat baseplate has? I look forward to all the future episodes... keep warm

Most narrowboats I’ve seen specs on have a 10mm baseplate, but this boat has 4. Shouldn’t be a huge problem unless you hit really sharp rocks.

Lovely job. And as you say shames all your hard work is getting covered up 😩 But you've put 5K value on your boat already 😆 Cheers Stevie

Very brave taking that wreck on.....

Good work. Just subscribed and catching up on previous episodes. You certainly don’t have to worry about rusting from the inside of the baseplate, it’s less than 4mm thick though in places I’d be concerned about rusting from the outside! Have you considered over plating of the baseplate? It could act as ballast too. Thorough job, must be very satisfying.

@Age M I take your point. My meaning remains the same in that the external hull needs treatment to prevent rusting and pitting.

No point using an oxide primer over a rust converter, the oxides in the primer have to be in contact with bare steel for their ust prevention action to work.

James you should get a Chinese diesel heater off EBay about £100 👍🏻 I have one heating my garage it's fantastic keeps it at 60 degrees and it's 24'6"X 9'6" made of concrete 👍🏻

Hi James...quick question. When you scrapped off the worst of the rust with the paint scraper, did you then wire brush the surfaces before the first coat or did you just get on with it please?

The red oxide looks great--shame to have to cover it up! It's very enjoyable to watch your progress.

Your base plate bends when you kneel on it. I suppose its your flexable friend now

Do you have any theories why that *one* bulkhead slash interior wall is in what looks to be steel? And the rest of the walls was apparently just paneling?

    • @TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt
      @TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Jasper Janssen the whole boat is just made from steel. That bulkhead is not structural - just there. Keep watching and hopefully one day you’ll see no steel at all inside !!

We had bought a 96' hull with 1 gallon milk jugs for lower ballast. Do standard long boat use bricks for ballast?

Wonder how Vartan compares to Jenolite?

I saw the bottom flex when you stepped on it, I dont know the thickness of Springers (6mm?) are you going to get a leak test before you fit the floorboards?

According to the survey episode, this one is 4 mm. Thinner than the sides. But no serious rusting detected by the survey, which was pretty thorough.

Quick tip - don't put your cuppa on cold steel.

Interesting project James, but, I do wish you did not wave the camera about so much.
