I work at a community a college in Tennessee and help students receive the Tennessee Promise scholarship. Between the Federal Pell Grant, HOPE Scholarship, and Tennessee Promise, students in Tennessee have the ability to attend community college tuition free if they meet all requirements and meet all the deadlines. Most of our students transfer to the major state university right down the road and continue on to receive their bachelors. Community colleges have a negative stigma attached to them, but they are a very smart financial decision.

I am so glad that I chose that route, as most of my fellow classmates who went straight to a 4-year university graduated with over 50k in loans. I don't understand why community college is looked down upon. It's a great, cheaper option. Yes, have a working RN explain nursing to her. I am a retired RN and have seen so many kids go through nursing programs of all sorts. First you get the associate nursing degree (ADN) from the community college. Then you take your RN board exam and pass. Then you get a job as a RN. Next, if you want it, you have the hospital pay for your tuition while you work for them as a RN, and you get a BSN. Nursing is so versatile and you have no need or incentive to rack up debt if you are smart and willing to work hard.

My daughter wanted to be a nurse once. I recomended that after High School she work as a caregiver for a few days a week to get her foot in the door of the industry, become a CNA next year, decide where she wanted to go to college after that. She found a job real quickly after getting CPR certified. The job she liked... but her coworkers... well the older ones she was close with, but the younger ones the ones more in her age range... while they were good at their jobs they weren't very good at teaching her, they never said she did anything wrong during training, even when she asked and she did ask. Instead they reported her to the managment where she was pulled into the office and talked to. This happened apparently two more times, despite her pulling one aside and asking if there was anything she could improve on, "No, I don't think so". She was called into the office again reported for concerns on her training brought by that very same person even management seemed to be confused when that was brought up. My daughter quit within three weeks and thereafter refused to work in "young female dominated" career paths. I know this isn't really on topic but you comment just reminded me of it.

@@juliancain3872 You offered your daughter wise counsel and I am also not surprised at her difficulties. Better that she experienced nursing care problems at this level before she invested money and time in a career she would end up hating. Nursing is very difficult and there are more emotional pitfalls than you can imagine. You are smack dab in the middle of conflicts with administration at every level, doctors and their egos, co-worker tensions and sabotage, and patient/family problems. You have to either be a bit if a doormat or run for the hills. I only recommend nursing to those who feel called to it as their vocation in life. It has been mine all along since early childhood.

Take it from a RN with a BSN from a college. I am 40 and I owe a lot of student loans for it. I lived in a state at the time that did not offer an associate degree. When I finished they finally did. But after getting my license and moving to another state started to work as an RN. I have the past 10 years watching Associate Degree nurses making as much as me and then going back to get their BSN. I managed to injure my back that has put me out of floor nursing. All the while owing all these student loans. The smarter way to get your RN is the community college. Then if you want to get your BSN, get it later. I went to a CC and it was a steal, even for 1984-86. My first semester's tuition AND books ran me $250 total. Sure, no way you can get that deal today, but another selling point was that I got a sound education in the core subjects, taught by professors who were in the classroom, not off doing "research" so they could publish, not perish. Now that deal you can still get in 2022.

Ok.. let's break down the mothers mind:
    - she wants her daughter to go to expensive college
    -Expensive college = rich boys
    - rich boy = possible future husband
    - future husband will pay for everything, he is rich
    - she, the mother, will participate , through her daughter, to high society.
    - she, the mother, will try to find a old rich man to marry him
    -she is rich now
    - She will say: " it was love at the first sight, I didn't plan!"

This is the issue with our family court system. They make the non-custodial parent, who ironically usually is the bread winner, pay an enormous amount of child support to someone who is not responsible with their money. There is no examination and accountability of where the money goes either. Paying for college is a joint effort, or at least in my state it is. The smartest way to do this is to do an ADN RN at the community college then do a CCNE accredited online RN->BSN program that the hospital will pay for. BSN nurses and ADN nurses both take the same exam NCLEX to get the same RN license. The only difference is the ADN takes all the required nursing but not the fluff courses needed to reach 120 credits which is the standard to get a bachelor's degree. Those fluff courses can be taken online as they are often not related to nursing day to day job and are just there to fill out enough credits to grant the bachelor's degree and the hospital will pay for it.

This way she has both the community college learning experience and the university lecture and test taking experiences. Or, she could just become an LPN through on the job training and certifications, then enroll into the accelerated BSN track. Another thing she could do is get training as a paramedic, work as a paramedic for a year or two, then go into an accelerated BSN track that’s offered to folks with paramedic experience. That way, she might get the education for free. She’s got a lot of options and research to do.

In this country there is a stigma associated with community colleges. Many people view them as second-class institutions full of students who were not smart enough/too poor to attend a four-year college (Chris Rock had a joke saying that a community college was “a disco with books.”). Plus, most community colleges don’t have residential dorms like four-year universities do, so graduating high school students feel like they would be missing out on the “traditional” college experience of living on campus with other 18-21 year-olds (as community college students tend to be older). I went to a community college and if I hadn’t gone there, I wouldn’t have gotten the full scholarship that I did to the (very expensive) four-year university I got my bachelor’s degree from.

As State Universities moved towards what is effectively open enrollment, community colleges have dipped into a chunk of the applicant pool that is not academically prepared for college. To "promote retention" the CC's have watered down the curriculum to the point that much of the coursework is more like 6th grade. "Persons of a certain age" who went to college before the Participation Trophy Diploma era will have no idea that this has even happened. Read the course catalogue before you commit to any school.

Better, have her talk to ten RN's. The real issue is that most RN programs turn away a lot more than apply because they just don't have the seats. That's why the expensive private colleges exist- folks don't want to wait 2 to three years before their number comes up in the lottery. In Southern California we tell students to apply to every CC that's within driving distance and hope the get accepted by one that is closest. I'm not sure how much money they would need to spend at a CC, though. Most states have tuition-free programs for middle and low-income families, and there is always the Pell Grant, which is something like $5K per year, for like $1400 tuition, you spend the rest on whatever you want.
