On Tuesday 18th August 2009, with every seat and all standing room occupied, the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain played to a sold-out Royal Albert Hall in London, with over 6000 audience members, and well over 1000 of them bringing ukuleles to join in with Beethoven's "Ode to Joy".
This clip is taken from their DVD "Prom Night", The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain Live at the Royal Albert Hall BBC Proms 2009, made from filming on the night, which the Ukulele Orchestra has managed to get access to. The DVD is available only from www.ukuleleorchestra.com and has never been broadcast, signed, licenced or sold elsewhere.
The music played is:
Puffin Billy (Edmund White, Great British Light Music Classic)
Anarchy in the UK (The Sex Pistols)
Ride of the Valkyries (Richard Wagner)
Silver Machine (Hawkwind)
Life on Mars (David Bowie)
Thunderball (James Bond / John Barry)
Teenage Dirtbag (Wheatus)
Danse Macabre (Camille Saint-Saëns)
Jerusalem (William Blake and Hubert Parry)
Psycho Killer (Talking Heads)
Ode to Joy (A fragment of Beethoven arranged for 1008 ukuleles)
Pinball Wizard (The Who)
The Dambusters March (Eric Coates)
Melange (which reveals how all the key rock songs are variants of one theme)
Wuthering Heights (Kate Bush)
This DVD cover notes say it "is a complete record of the Ukulele Orchestras Proms debut, with footage of the full concert. I absolutely love your music. Every time i'm feeling even vaguely down i come onto TH-cam and listen to a few songs and i'm instantly uplifted. The joy that you bring to your music is utterly contagious! Thank you.
Absolutely KILLER!!! 😉❤️🛸🚀👽♠️🕉🎛🎛
You're amazing
The technicalities involved in playing such a challenging piece worthy of KUDOS.
I love the smell of ukulele in the morning!
You know your pop culture
🤣 You beat us to it!!!
:D
Saw what you did!😄
Something right about David singing about flying through space and time, while looking like a Doctor Who regeneration!
For those who seem to want to go negative always...it's called having fun with music...and they do, and most of us do with them.
Is there someone going negative on this?
Well said.
@@neuvocastezero1838 doubtful. Impossible to be negative with this, Wagner & Hawkwind is a truly classic mix.
British eccentricity at its best
Amazing seeing how they play these pieces that are normally require a full orchestra!
Their next project is a performance of Havergal Brian's "Symphony #1, the Gothic".
The amazing thing is that they play something that ukuleles are completely inappropriate for - and it WORKS!!
Like genius banjo player Bela Fleck tackling jazz/rock and classical. Who'da thunk that would work?
That's the wonderful thing about the UoGB: they don't admit/care/whatever that the instrument is completely unsuitable for many pieces. Find their Dambusters March (if you can: I can't, please share if you do!); there are sections of that I'd expect were marked "maestoso", which the uke _can't_ do. But the UoGB did it - and carried it off, too.
That’s very much the central conceit.

my grandad was a die hard fan of hawkwind, he passed 2 days ago but I wish I could have shown him this
I'm turning to 70 soon & was a HAWKWiND-Fan like your grandad, too•
This brings actual tears of joy to my eyes. I will never ever get tired of this!
I love the way you all contribute to the song with your individual strumming. I'm listening to this video in 2020. Thank for staying the course and sharing 💖💖💖
I was in the audience for this, and have been to see them a few times since. What a great night
I saw them in oxford, absolutely brilliant
I was in the audience and saw Hawkwind playing Silver Machine in 1972. What a great night :)
Bloody hell - that means it's nearly 50yrs old!
This is... but this... wait this is... absolutely brilliant... I have no words...
I've not heard Silver Machine in a long time. This really made me smile!
Who did Silver Machine?

I love it! I pictured Elmer Fud in his golden helmet with spear in hand singing kill the wabbit, kill the wabbit! They are very talented and I appreciate having them to listen to and they always bring a smile to my face. I'll be laughing about this for the rest of my life. May God bless them always. ✌ ❤ 🎸
With his spear and magic helmet?
I just love the guys imitating the audio generators and VCS 3 synth. Wonderful.
When that thing began to do so surround on my audio system, I went from awe to floored.
We saw the Ukes sing "Silver Machine" at Cropredy one year - it was simply brilliant !! 😎
Rock,... classical,... folk, pick the genre,... they do it all with incredible perfection. Wish they'd tour the States..... I will be watching for em....
They have. Came to Austin, Texas for a show in 2016.
simply outstanding! Makes one proud to say "yeah... I play the uke"!
This is the most wonderful thing I've been turned onto on youtube for a while. Thanks!!
went to see them last night in concert absolutely fantastic I am hooked.
I've never thought of Ride of the Valkyries as being "sparkling," but this has changed my mind. Very nice.
Robert Calvert, the greatest poet musician who ever graced this planet called earth, is smiling upon you. Now please cover Hawkwind's Urban Guerilla... you KNOW you want to!
Saw these guys in Norwich a little while back. One of the best live acts I've ever seen. IMO what music really is> Thank you UOGB!!! Keep on keeping on!
Something so simple turned into an orchestra.i am impressed.fantastic work!
Very clever very good very brilliant. Love it. More more more.
I saw them in Houston a few months back, amazing!!
The UOGB are still (rather worryingly) one of my favourite groups/bands/collectives/orchestras of all time. I love it :)
I’ve watched this about a gazilion times. I’m a massive fan of the Ukulele Orchestra , bit this one just peps me up incredibly.
This orchestra is so inspiring. This wonderful little instrument!
Gotta be one of the best versions of silver machine ive heard - and im a diehard hawklord
Throwing Hawkwind into that medley is absolutely insane, and hilarious!
Wow! Absolutely amazing! Back when I used to play in a metal band, I wrote a lot of my songs on accoustic guitar. One day we were noodling around in the basement and our bass player banged off a really nice ukelele solo for one of our original tunes. Sure wish I'd had some tape rolling, as it was 6 years between that session and me actually learning how to solo myself.
Got to love Creativity and thinking outside the Box...its Glorious...!!!!
This is just all sorts of awesome!
Classic line up from when I was first introduced to The Ukes x
Thank you so much for playing Silver Machine in Graz the other day. Loved it!
How many likes can I tap...wowie zowie these tunes regenerate me...ole gal from the sixties💽🍷😷🎶will end my night again with Life On Mars sigh. 🤸🏼♀️💽🖖

Wonderful music. Thank you very much.
Totally awesome
This is from the year 2010. At some angles if you do not see his bun Dave, on our far left, looks like the 1963 Doctor Who (William Hartnell). Whilst Jonty, on our far right, looks like the 2010 Master (John Simm).
@junkers290 thanks so much... yep that's it. I just love the look on Kitty's face!! I wonder how long they had to practise to get that down right. thanks again!!
Please please please..come to Canada!!!

Human beings.
Impressive...most impressive.
My ears have died and gone to heaven! Thank you; oh, thank you!
@AreaQNH870
Ayup.
A buddy and I were lucky to attend one of their concerts last month.
Needless to say the Ukes rocked!!!
That buddy has been playing bass guitar for nearly 30 years and I trust his judgement,
when he said it was defintely a ukulele bass.
We took a closer look at the instrument during the break between the 2 sets.
The soundbox was smaller and the scale length shorter than what you get with a normal acoustic bass.
when I drive my 23 year old merc listening to this the rev counter goes straight in to red .superb .
Thanks to that brilliant inspiration I am now playing Silver Machine on my acoustic ;)
RIP Kitty Lux, co-founder of the orchestra.
Sorry to hear that. Didn't know she passed away. RIP
@edwardianeccentric That's the beauty of music; it lives and you never know when an when someone will come to change the entire landscape of possibilities.
Every vid posted on this channel is delightful. I find myself returning time after time. The musicianship is sublime but the main thing it brings me is simply Joy. Such a simple thing that we should always treasure. Thank you all.
Outstanding
MAGNIFICOSSSSS....SALUDOS DESDE ARGENTINA....
Absolutely Brilliant
Love the Silver Machine!
Whilst comparisons are odious -- surely I cannot be alone in saying Post-Modern Ukebox. A blessing on both their houses.
Well said Sir!
I think.
Awesome stuff - lots more please.
Still the best Ukulele orchestra... the others are all contrived and desperately unfunny....
Yes
You are correct Bill, the one and the only Ukulele orchestra of Great Britain
I Love this and won't rest till I have the DVD!
How can anyone not love the UOoGB?
"Does humour belong in music?" (Frank Zappa).
yes. yes it does
It's my favourite variety of humour.
wow!!!!! Awesome i love it
Génial.
I will play this when I will be rolling down the street on my 50ccm moped
A hell of a lot of thought has gone in to this.
Simply glorious!
Great!!!!
