Installing a Quaife ATB LSD (Differential) on BMW M235i, with No specialty tools

  • This video is for reference in swapping out a rear differential for a limited slip differential / Torsen differential, in this case a Quaife ATB (automatic Torque Biasing) LSD from Birds Garage UK, on a F22 bmw M235i. This car is a 2014 8-speed auto coup but might be same for the f23 convertibles and/or manual cars.
    Torsen - geared TORque SENsing
    Helical not straight cut gears
at 30sec mark (it's $2700usd, as shown on 2nd paper)
and to clarify at the 5:34 mark - there are no bolts on axels.. i was talking and the 3 mounting bolts for carrier.
i put in a couple short videos in this main video to try to show what i was going on about.. but the meat of the video is to show that the BMW press fit Axles DO NOT need a specialty tool to remove.

Thank you for this invaluable video. There is very limited info for DIY installs on m235i LSD units and this is gold. I appreciate you took the time to make it as it helped me immensely for my upcoming lsd install. Again, thank you!

Thank you for this video. I just bit the bullet and purchased a Quaife tonight for my M235. I've been considering doing the install myself. Still kind of shitting my pants at the thought of it, but your video certainly gives me confidence that it's possible.

@NJFPV its honestly not that bad to do. Wish I made a better video as I didn't realize how many views it would get. Loved that car and quaife made it for sure. I've been driving an M2c now for almost 3 years. So it's been some time.

@@nixeighty6 Yeah!! You followed the dream we all have and moved into thr M2! (and a comp - wow, that's awesome!). Good for you, man. One day... one day. And I know you wish you made a better vid, but honestly, it's perfect. The fact that it's raw and no frills I think is what the charm is about it. There's no BS calculation that needs to be done about what the job ACTUALLY looks like, because all I see is a 2 second cut of some guy with clean hands and a smile holding a wrench, with a catchy beat playing in the background. You show the pertinent points, and we're on our backs on the garage floor with you - nothing more that can be asked in a video like this!
Just to ask - is there anything else to the job that you think is important to know? I have watched a couple diff swap videos for other models and I see people doing all kinds of craziness, like loosening suspensions and transmissions, etc. From what I have gathered in your vid and what I understand about the process for the M235, I will need a 50mm open wrench, some big flatheads and a prybar, a jack, some patience, and some 75w90 synthetic gear oil.
Seems like you dropped exhaust, unbolted the drive shaft first, then loosened the bolts of the diff from the car, then separated the left and right axles by prying them, then unbolted the diff entirely and swung the whole unit down, allowing you to remove the axles entirely and pull the diff out. Same/opposite on the way back in...
Sorry if I'm asking too much - I'm just trying to mentally prepare, and would love to know if I have a key misunderstanding somewhere...
      Thank you again!

@NJFPV cheers and thanks for the props.. I just put it out cuz I didn't see one on even an M235i diff. 10kviews. Lol.
Think you mostly got it, but 2 points
1: the oil for a quaife is VERY specific, don't f*ck around there.. I cover that at 8m42s in the video. It doesn't have any friction modifiers at all, which almost all oils do.
The oil is good for LIFE. Yes, literally.. I asked the guys at birds garage and the said no "break in" change or ever. Even if racing endurance races. Or with hundreds of thousands of miles. I was shocked, (please do confirm with them. Cuz it's still hard for me to believe)
      2. I did not have to take off suspension stuff, and that's why I tey to describe that turn I did to get the axles out. It is doable, if maybe a P.i.t.a.
If you have to take off suspension. Just remember to mark the alignment bolt.(s) and you shouldn't need an alignment.
I loved that quaife.. if you drive hard it's a must.
      Best of luck

      @@nixeighty6 thank you!!
Got it. Will verify (very specifically) the fluid, and understood on the suspension. I suppose it might be the "simpler" way, to pull the axles out of the pumpkin rather than maneuver the pumpkin off of the axles, but I'm with you 100% on how you did it - a little sweating, cursing, finesse, and rough-handling, and that thing will come out...
Anyway, thanks again, and thanks for the additional info. With any luck, I should have a MUCH better handling machine in a few days :)

    • @NJFPV
      @NJFPV 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

One last question, if you'd be so kind. Did you fill it with fluid before you installed it, or after? If after, did you have to use some kind of pump/syphon/syringe?
Thanks again. Tomorrow is the day. The 50mm cartoon wrench showed up today :) Quaife is in the air over the Atlantic as we speak.

At 5: 50 I try to explain how I got it out. And iirc I did pull the whole unit down and got the drives side first.
I'm sure if you pulled the wheels and two lower control arms.. maybe just from one side (and not at the alignment bolt) you could possibly get it out easier.

    • @NJFPV
      @NJFPV 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

And 2 years after the reply, but on a debate between wider tires and LSD, I don't think there's any debate at all... You can go twice the width of your current tire by installing a device that allows you to actually use both rear tires (as a sports car was designed to run), not to mention the immeasurable other benefits in driving, cornering, wet and snow, and general safety of the vehicle. So yes, you can get wider tires without doing anything to your tires :) just use both instead of one!
In other words, don't try to solve it with a wider one wheel drive. It's just as lame, but you have less money with the same amount of lameness ;)

when I was weighing all my options I talked to a local shop about doing this crown removal and Quaife install but it was the same price for me to just get the whole pumpkin from Birds UK. I'd start hitting the car forum for options.. best of luck

      In short, YES.
      In long..
It's been "like factory" in all ways of use.. quiet, seamless and functional. With it being the same price as the M performance BMW diff in this application (F22) I would do this again anyday.
2 benefits over clutch type are this won't wear out like a clutch type, and for some reason Birds ok (Quaife) said "no oil change necessary ever".. no, really.

They are not fastened but do have a clip that tensions them in place.. it just takes a little pressure to unseat them to take them out. Then you just put them into the new one and the last little bit takes a tap to fully seat them.

The thing I will defend is getting DIY ers the info of the process and that you don't need specialty tools. If there was a single, I mean even a (one) video on doing this job I wouldn't have bothered. But thanks for the critique David , I'm sure this video won't help you when you don't ever do a diff swap on a f2x.. but ya never know.

Bro, this video is a godsend as there is literally zero context for DIY other than the "BMW method". Sure there are some how-to's on forums but it's one thing for someone to say what they did vs actually showing you exactly, in the video, what and where things were done. I am a visual learner and have wrenched on my 235i from day 1. I was having a tough time figuring out how the DIY people did it exactly, as some even mentioned removing suspension bits for clearance. This video makes 100% sense to me and now can't wait for my m perf LSD to arrive so I can slap it on.
