Ganz's performance is pure genius. Probably the best performance of a historical character ever put on film. I saw Downfall in the theatre. Ganz's explosions of rage were terrifying to experience - I could feel the fear in the audience. It was a devastating experience and is a brilliant film.
Reading up on Ganz's approach, he said he never even came close to understanding the man, he just worked out each scene like he would any other in his normal acting formula and did the best job he could. But he doesn't understand the overall mindset, just able to break down individual emotions and play them as he would any other character. And that says a lot about how professional the man was. Nobody could really understand Hitler, so to play him so well, is the mark of an experienced thespian
@@Agent1W, Downfall should be re-released in theatres because the big screen impact og Ganz's perfect performance and the overall devastating power of this film takes it to a new level that a tv or laptop screen just can't do justice to.
Fun fact: this reenactment is always portrayed as showing the whole encounter lasted about 5-6 minutes. In reality, those from the bunker who wrote memoirs after the war said the entire rant lasted almost 30 minutes with several pauses for Hitler to catch his breath. In a way, it was his last will and testament. He knew was war was lost and that Berlin would fall so he took this final chance to lay into everyone in the room to tell them how they failed not only him, but the German people and Germany itself. He let them all have it.

@@jayanthony3006 His emotion and passion are proofs that he was human. It is important to acknowledge this, because it's important to acknowledge that humans can commit evil deeds.
Agreed. There's humour in the original scene without all the dumb memes. The irony of Hitler's Hubris and denial in spite of his obvious defeat. It's known as "Dramatic Irony". It's a tragic humour, but it's still a comedy of sorts. The memes just assume that the source material is deadly serious, and derive their humour from ireverrant parody. The memes derive their comedy from parodying the scene, but without the underlying intentional dark humour of the original scene, the memes wouldn't be funny.
Yeah the memes are funny but watching Bruno Ganz' incredible acting with the original subtitles (as I don't speak German) always brings me back to reality and the power of this performance. RIP Bruno 2019-0216.
Some of you people might be wondering to know who is the Hitler actor, and some of you have probably known it already. Aight this little information is for you guys who have yet to know, he is Bruno Ganz. He passed away in 16th February 2019. He was such a good actor, and there had been so many movies that was starred by him in a few film industries. You can find more information and the details about him in some other sources that might provide it. And need to be admitted that without him, the "Downfall" movie and the memes those meme masters benifited from would never exist. Oh NEIN😭. I came across a clip of Bruno commenting on the funny meme parodies of this scene & has since appeared to take it in stride since, though at 1st it wasn't always so. Now he is no more & he now belongs to the ages.
How the bell the guy that played Hitler didn’t win every acting award the US film industry could award is beyond me. It’s truly one of the greatest performances i’ve ever seen in a film EVER.
It's a German movie. It takes a LOT for a foreign-language movie to get a level of recognition that would put its actors on the American award lists. The movie was nominated for an Oscar, though. Ganz won several awards internationally for this performance.
Cause it's not an American movie. It wasn't eligible for most US awards. It got an Oscar nomination for best foreign film, but didn't win if I remember correctly. Which isn't a shame either. It's a decent film and Ganz acts phenomenally, but overall it's just decent, not great

For all of his brutality, Hitler rarely took revenge on his own officers (the assassination attempt is an exception). Most of his generals at this point knew very well that the war was over and they witnessed the men under their command being slaughtered and they wanted it to stop. I think this general was just sick of it, didn't care what happened to himself, just couldn't take it that his men were being insulted as though Germany's loss were their fault. He probably though he'd be dead in a few days anyway.

Steiner correctly assessed that an attack against such superior force would have no effect. It was a return to traditional German pragmatism, as Hitler's crazy fantasies were entering their final hours.

The balls on this man...........
I don't remember the time it was in U.S. theaters, because of it being a foreign film. It sucks I missed my shot at it too.
