Beer in Bavaria is one of the staple foods and not alcohol. That's why it's completely normal to drink a beer with your Brotzeit.

The Bavarian had a Stein with a lid. This was developed to be used in open beer gardens. There you sit under trees in the summer. And to avoid anything lusting for a beer bath (go to Prague for that) getting into your drink the lid serves as a protection to allow only authorized access. So the Steins with lids are not really necessary for indoor usage.

Oh beer for breakfast?! Count me in. Being a nurse and working the 11pm to 7am shift a bunch of us would occasionally go to an “old man’s bar” in town and get beer (instead of usual coffee) that was our “5:00” time! ha ha in some places in the states we have beers made with either lemon or grapefruit. It’s odd but interesting. I prefer the one with grapefruit. All these places look like such fun. I’m sure I would really love to try out such as you 2 did. The architecture is amazing! The ending picture is priceless 😂. Thank you

In the past, before there were sewage pipes and running water in houses, wells were often not far from latrines so that germs found their way into the drinking water.
Therefore, not only adults drank beer in the morning, but it was a thin beer with a low alcohol content.

Good choice to drink a Radler (with normal beer) or Russn (russian, with wheat beer) in the Hofbräuhaus. Radler means "biker" and was invented by bicyle riders who were thirsty but feared to get too drunk by so much beer. So they mixed it with lemonade.

    • @heindaddel2531
      @heindaddel2531 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The story is not fully true, here’s the whole story:
The Radler was "invented" by one of Munich's great gastronomic originals, the landlord Franz Xaver Kugler.
Kugler was actually a railroad worker. He earned his money on the Munich-Holzkirchen line, which was double-tracked towards the end of the last century. The work was hard and the nearest pub was far away, so Franz-Xaver Kugler came up with the idea of taking over the beer supply for his colleagues. From then on, he drove the beer to the construction site from the Deisenhofen station inn by horse and cart. Tired of the eternal back and forth journey, it wasn't long before Kugler built a wooden shack at the construction site which, under the name "Kantine der Königlich-Bayerischen Eisenbahn zu Deisenhofen" ("Canteen of the Royal Bavarian Railway at Deisenhofen"), took over the supply of the construction workers and, after the completion of the railroad line in 1897, was initially known as the "Waldrestaurant" ("Forest Restaurant") and was later renamed the "Kugler-Alm" ("Kugler Alm").
The Kugler-Alm, located around 15 km outside of Munich near Deisenhofen, quickly became a popular excursion destination. Whether it was sack races or gallop races, there was always something going on here. When the bicycle became increasingly popular after the First World War, Franz Xaver Kugler also had a cycle path built through the forest to the Kugler-Alm, a popular excursion route to this day. This idea was so enthusiastically received by the people of Munich that on a beautiful Saturday in the summer of 1922, 13,000 cyclists are said to have stormed the Kugler-Alm. The beer supplies could not keep up with this huge thirst! The clever landlord knew a way out: he mixed half of the beer, which was running low, with plenty of lemonade and served this new mixture to his guests as a "Radlermaß", claiming that he had invented this drink especially for cyclists so that they wouldn't have to ride home swaying.
The Radlermaß quickly caught on in Bavaria and also found fans in northern Germany, where it was translated as "Radfahrerliter". As dark beer still dominated in Bavaria at the time, the "Radler" was originally a mixture of dark full beer and clear lemonade. It was not until the general change in consumer taste away from dark beer and towards light beer that this change also took place in the Radler, which has since been made from light full beer and lemonade.

@@heindaddel2531… … 🥴

Bräuhaus means brewery, or brew house. The Rathaus (actually the NEW Rathaus) was built from 1867 onwards and was finally finished in 1909. The clockwork was built in 1899.

Fun fact: the Spielzeugmuseum (toy museum) that was mentioned is located inside the old city hall (altes Rathaus) which is wayyyy older than the older and grander looking new city hall. The old city hall is from the 14th century and has actually a large banquet hall that is still used for special occasions.

Weißwurst -- a short story. As a U.S. Army bandsman stationed in Ansbach, Germany in the late 70s/early 80s, we traveled often. And supported U.S. Army exercises. To stave off public relations problems, we were called on to play "Platzkonzerte" in various places. For an entire week, we played in the morning and were invited to sample Weißwürste mit süßem Senf -- white sausages with sweet mustard.
Let's just say that we got our fill of that particular food item!

Hehe my grandparents on my mother's side were both from Germany! Growing up as kids we would speak German at home but when we moved from Sweden when I was 11 my mother was concerned that we would lose our Swedish (since we would need to learn English for school) so we started speaking Swedish at home (I am Swedish). So unfortunately, the German didn't stay fluent - but my understanding is still decent and I'm happy to hear that my pronunciation is still ok!

So the thing with beer for breakfast is this. Usually, you don't have beer for breakfast, BUT if you have a Weißwurstfrühstück (a white sausage breakfast) which ought to be had by 10am you are supposed to have it with beer. If you rewatch the video, every other table has a white round bowl on the table. That's the bowl the white sausages are traditionally served in. Also those sausages are mostly fat and salt, so the beer won't hit you as hard.
You usually won't see anyone having beer with, say, a serving of scrambled eggs... also why even go to a Bavarian inn for breakfast if you just want scrambled eggs? ;)
But yeah, the breakfast beer here falls into the white sausage exception. Otherwise the first socially permissible beer comes with lunch :)
Edit: btw. your pronunciation is ace! Very impressive.

Yes in Germany people share tables in eating places. Often they are long tables with chairs. That cheese and pretzel looked really good. I think people just go to the popular places and eat things they presume are German when in fact the whole of Europe has similar versions of dishes with a slight twist. That is why they also say Bon Appetite. A little bit French isn’t it? You go to Poland and the food has more paprika but you still get dumplings and sausage.

New to this channel, and as time permits, I am slowly making my way to the older videos. Wow, this video makes me want to visit the country I was born in. I love the expression "holy guacamole," which is much less crude or offensive than "holy sh.t," which is what I use to say when I lived in Canada. It's funny to hear Europeans use it as I hear it hear it frequently here in the United States, which is where I now live. Given that there are more positive comments than negative ones, we can chose to either ignore them or teach them not to be judgmental.

The bavarian cheese you were looking for is commonly called "Obatzda". Unfurtunenatly this name is an intellectual property brand mark owned by a single manufacturer due to recent jurisprudence. So every producer of the original "Obatzda"-reciepe has to work around with the naming. In your case you had "Ogmachter".

The origin of the Oktoberfest is a horse race organized by the Munich militia on 17 October 1810 in honour of the wedding of the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria (1786-1868, King 1825-1848) and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen (1792-1854). Thats the reason why it is called Oktoberfest.

In Bavaria taking place at a table occupied by strangers is only usual in beer gardens and locations like the Schneider Bräuhaus, Hofbräuhaus etc..
