I once had a dermatologist tell me his clients with the best skin are those who started using Retin A in their twenties.
So good job. You look fabulous.

I can't believe you have to defend yourself. You were perfectly clear in your first video. Also it CRACKS ME UP that anyone disagrees with you. You are the most beautiful 61 year old I've ever seen in my life. Your skin is INSANELY GORGEOUS! I'm sure it's all pure luck and has nothing to do with your skincare routine ;)

    She is pretty spot on!
    1) Retin-A needs to be applied on a CLEAN and DRY skin (if your skin is too tight after washing, it is too dry. it is a no no)
    2) Moist or wet skin increased the absorption rate of Retin A which can lead to more side effect
    3) If your skin is not peeling when you are using this product, it doesn't mean it is not working! It is okay!
    4) if your skin is peeling or too dry from the Retin A, you can definitely apply moisture IMMEDIATELY after it was washed to prevent transepidermal water loss. HOWEVER, you need to wait 20-60 mins for the moisturizer to be absorbed and dried before putting on Retin-A. Why you may ask? Remember, products absorbed at a faster rate on wet/moist skin which will lead to more side effects.
    5) Remember to wear your FULL spectrum SPF and don't use Retin-A in the morning. It takes up to 2 years for you to get the full benefit of Retin-A. Hang in there, especially during the retinization period.
6)Live now and age later :) stay young and healthy.
Moisturized that contain HA or Niacinamide are pretty good!

Great information, Melissa. For about a year, I've just been using Retin A, and that's it. Prior to that I applied Hyaluronic Acid, after R.A. I bet no one would have noticed you had different earrings on, lol. You crack me up, girl. It is so obvious, what you do is definitely working. You are the most beautiful woman on YT, bar none. I think it is exciting that my skin improved, and I was almost 61 before I even tried R.A. Love you, my dear friend. Blessings, prayers, and joy...MaryEllen

Some Derms recommend applying a serum/moisturizer before applying retin-A when first starting out to prevent over peeling in the beginning.

This video was amazing Melissa. If a beautiful woman that looks half her age tells me what she does for skincare, I'm going to open my ears as wide as possible lol. From a science perspective, the no moisturiser theory makes perfect sense and I'm thinking of trying it. I think people maybe need to think of it as there isn't one right answer to anything in the world, theories and advice changes continuously so there is only really "what's right for me" as you said :0) I do have two questions, hopefully I didn't miss you answering them (I was doing housework whilst watching!) - what was your skin like before you started using moisturiser? How much do you think is genes VS your skincare routine - 50/50? Hugs my friend. Karen x

Montana Snowflake not that u asked me 😄 but I don’t use moisturizer. It seemed to clog my pores early on so I just never got into the routine..I’ve used retina since they first came out with it...I’m not far from 70 years old..I could have done better but I’ve held up pretty well for my advanced age 😄. I credit using sunscreen from my early 20s...and retina..not smoking or drinking very little... like a couple of times a year...and for years I exercised regularly...I’m trying to get back to that...it helps a lot...my diet isn’t great. So I could have done much better...and should have but too late now!

I can't believe my eyes and ears! How are you over 60? You are such a remarkable beauty and inspiration. I agree with many of your commenters who appreciate your philosophy on skipping moisturizer and other products to avoid diluting the effects of Retin-A and to force the skin to find its moisture balance. Out of all the beauty video contributors, I have to say that your recommendation to start off simple made the most sense. Some of the other beauty video contributors use fillers and Botox (not that I am against this) and you demonstrated that you do not. In my opinion, your results are the most over whelming! I will be following your recommendations and you! thank you for sharing such life changing advice!!!

Hi Melissa, I totally agree with you about the moisturizers...I really hadn't used much most of my life, I'm now 52 and decided last year to see what to do about my aging skin..I went on TH-cam and watched all kinds of mature skin videos and went out and bought all kinds of lotions and potions. I noticed after some time that it looked like my skin was sagging and I was getting more "jowly"..I've since stopped using them only because I watched one of your videos where you had talked about how you had noticed that the use of moisturizers had made your skin more saggy.. I now only use the retin a at night and the Timeless vitamin c serum along with the matrixyl 3000 serum in the morning. Oh and also sunscreen of course. And my skin has finally gone back to looking firmer..especially around my mouth and jowl area. So Thank you so much!!!! My skin is finally making sense to me :) :):)

Hey Melissa, yes I agree with your "reversed" theory. When we leave dry skin without putting moisturiser we do enhance it to produce the moisture. It also works the other way (that I would recommend to people struggling with acne). By applying "oil control" cream in some cases we might start to stimulate it to produce more oil to balance the dry cream. But every skin is unique and not all "gold rules" will suit everyone.
P.S. You are such a pretty lady, from outside and most importantly from the inside.

    • @Melissa55
      @Melissa55  8 ปีที่แล้ว

+minabady I have heard this too about the reversed theory. And it makes sense to me. I feel like sometimes when we go through life dealing with our skin we have to trick it into doing something different. lol And the number one rule is there are no rules! lol. aw, thank you so much for your kindness. You are gorgeous. Love, Melissa

Thank you so much for posting this. I too have not been using moisturizer for almost 2 weeks now. I saw a Doctor on FABlife tv show claiming you don't need moisturizer when using retin-a. And for my skin type it's working. I was following HotandFlashy about 6 months ago & started the retin-a. My skin has improved so much & thankful for you both posting on this. I'm 58 and my skin never looked better! I also came across Brianna Stanko's video, but now I'm onto her - she keeps pushing expensive products that she gets commissions on, one of her latest ones I totaled up the products she was using just on her a.m. routine and it was over $1200! I'm good with the retin-a at night, vitamin c serum, coQ10 serum & sunscreen for day time. I did indulge on Guerlain L'Or Radiance Concentrate make up base and it just works magic on my skin with my foundation. You are such an inspiration & so beautiful - looking forward to your next video!

Chasing Beauty you are so beautiful! You just glow! I'm 51 and haven't really used anything for wrinkles ever. A few years ago I did try retin-a but I stopped because I have very sensitive skin and my face was very irritated. I'm going to try it again and follow your regimen. There's not a lot of beauty tips out there for women over 50. Thank you, you are an inspiration!

Chasing Beauty I had to stop watching Hot & Flashy because everything in her description box was an affiliate link. She posts her skincare routine very often (always with affiliate links) and there's a ton of products. I like taking care of my skin, but I think she goes way overboard on her videos to make that extra commission.
I just want a simple routine that works well for me. I've been on .1% Tretinoin for almost a year (started off way too fast as well), but I'm now at a good place with my skin.
Hope you are having a good day 😊

Hi Melissa! My goodness, you are still just as stunning! I had stopped using RA, but my doctor recommended that I start again mixed with Obagi (now called ZO) to lighten my sun spots. My skin does very well with RA, and I do have some minimal flaking but nothing unbearable. I'd been thinking of using on my lids and neck and thought I was crazy but now I hear you, so we're on the same page. I won't get off it again because I'm starting to see an improvement with the dark spots. I have normal skin, so I'm going to try going with no moisturizer. It made lots of sense. Thank you for all the great info!!! You are truly the best!!! xoxo -Marlene

+Marlene Fab & Glam Over 50 Marlene that is so kind of you to say. Thank you so much. I'm curious, have you had any problem using it on your eyelids? I just go down as far as my brow bone, but would love to work on my lids. Have you had any ill effects at all? Thank you so much and much love, Melissa

Honestly, Melissa, I did have problems as much I was hoping that it'd work for me. After using it on my lids, I had terrible burning sensation on my lids the following morning. It didn't matter if I was using a cream or washing my face with a mild face wash. The burning was intolerable. Let me know if you try it and it works for you. Maybe I did something wrong. xoxo -Marlene

Hi! I'm new to your channel. What you had to say in this video makes absolute, perfect sense! I am a hairstylist and I have told clients for years that their scalp Is going to produce more and more oil if they use a harsh, clarifying type of shampoo. Most people don't want an oily scalp. Hence using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. We want our face to produce self moisturizing. Like I say, it makes sense to me! Thanks so much for the great videos.

I am 44 years old and have used Obagi with Retin A for 4 years, and I have not one wrinkle. Prior to that, I always took care of my skin. There is no need to explain yourself, you do what works for you, and let everyone else do what works for them. I also use the Obagi Vitamin C in the morning. My skin is soft, even toned and I get compliments all the time. I also get accused of Botox, and I have had none. You look beautiful and oh by the way, I only use moisturizer on my neck, not on my face :)

The most important point is in the title of your video: "28 years of Retin A use." Skin care is a process. You arrived at a destination of loveliness because you put in time and effort over nearly 3 decades. Well done!
The truth is like height, skin is mostly inherited and good genes play a large role. One can make significant improvements through time, care and consistency. However, nothing works like a magic wand.
You gave an elegant account of your personal experience. Thank you for sharing your story.
You are a testament to the old adage: "When you're young and beautiful, it a gift. When you're older and beautiful, it's because you've earned it."

LOL Melissa...a very good friend of mine - at least 20 years - has always worn two different earrings. It's her signature look and she started it to initiate conversations with strangers. She's awesome! I think Dr. Obigi's original thinking might have something to do with evolution ... reckon? I had left my Bare Minerals in Arkansas but I did have the It Celebration and used it with my kabuki brush and it worked great to smooth the peeling out. I'm with you on doing what is right for us! Love ya...p 🎀

I have thought a lot about Dr. Obagi's original theory and his modification of it and I'm unsure of the conclusions. lol. I really might be doing everything wrong. I'm open to the possibility of changing things as I go along. I might need to. And of course, new things and treatments might come out that will change all of us. I am so glad to hear that other mineral powders worked, too. That is really good information to know. Thank you more than I can say and love you! Melissa

I took my daughter now 20, to my dermatologist when she was home from college around Christmas time. She has perfect skin and I would like for her to maintain it. We generally have very good skin in my family but we start losing volume after 50. Anyhow, the doctor put her on vitamin c serum in morning and her night cream also has vitamin c. He told us prevention is the key at her age so vitamin C and very good sunscreen is a must and he prefers glycolic acid night cream from 24-30 when collagen production takes a big dip. He said after 30 is when he starts his patients on retinol products and depending on the skin at about 40 he prefers retin-a. He started me on retin-a just as I turned 50 and I have been using full strength 0.1 for about 5 months. I am not seeing any visible change but The only visible lines I have are on my forehead and they are due to 12 or more hours of computer use for over 30 years and Florida strong sunshine. My eyes are very sensitive to light.

      @Melissa55  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

+Something2entertain Now that is very interesting what the dermatologist said about your daughter and the Vitamin C serum. I had read the same thing in some literature. I really like glycolic acid. I use it on my hands and arms and it's helping with spots. You know you might just have really healthy skin so you might not see signs of change because you don't need change, if that makes sense. Which is wonderful! That was such interesting information and I can't thank you enough for posting it for all of us. I really appreciate it. Love, Melissa

My Nana always said the day she stopped learning would be when she was ready to die. My dr & dermatologist said that as a woman ages and her hormones change, she produces less moisture. So interesting to hear the different thoughts. I put my retin a on my eyes too :-) I swear by my vitamin C serum as well. What you do DEFINITELY works and you look fabulous. Love ya girl. ♥ Elle

    • @Melissa55

+Elle Is For Living I so agree with your grandmother. I've noticed the biggest amount of dryness on my neck. And with the Retin A experiment it looks like it's about to crack sometimes, but I'm trying to see it through and not use any moisture.. So I really do understand how someone with dry skin has trouble with Retin A and not using moisturizer. And it might not be the best thing to do. It might be much better to actually use moisturizers - I'm just not sure. I know that you and Kristinn both do and you both have gorgeous complexions. It all goes back to the old "everyone's skin is different". I'm so very glad to get your thoughts because it really helps me a lot. I really admire you and I think you have the most gorgeous skin!!! Love you lots! Melissa

You have a light and joyful affect in the way you teach all of us and come on - the proof of your experience is written all over your lovely face! For reals. So . . . I have not started Retin A yet (I've used a retinol since my late 40s), but I have some in a online cart and am about to pull the trigger. Thanks for this Melissa! Since Retin-A comes in various strengths it can be used be used on a variety of skin types. I found that .5 was too strong and chose .25 as the maintenance prescription. However..I also think I want the .5 in addition for when my skin needs a good peel.
I would say starting using Retin- A the sooner the better is better. With this discount prescription cards I was able to pay $60-something for a big tube that has lasted me months.

You are such a genuine person thanks for the wonderful info. I'm also amazed by your neck and décolletage. It's so smooth. It's actually smoother than mine and I'm 38. lol. I have been omitting putting skincare on my neck and décolletage and I'm seeing it really starting to age. I also don't use moisturizer. I often use only Olive Oil in the evening on my face and I use mostly natural skincare like DIY masks. However I often don't put it on my neck, because I forget. Now I'm seeing how the skin on my face looks a lot smoother and my neck and décolletage is very dry and has lines. Thanks for all the amazing info.

What a great bit of wisdom born from experience! Thank you. I am looking to start moving from retinol to Retin A. I am getting drier ever year, so the 'no moisturizer" thing really is a lot to wrap my head around. But to have a line free face like years in my future will be worth experimenting. Knowing about dealing with the peeling and how to try it with hoods and neck is a great bit of extra insight. THANK YOU!

You're hilarious, Melissa! Two mismatched earrings is better than going through a day with only one earring because you simply forgot the the other one.....something I do way too often for my liking. Ha! I do appreciate how open you are to the fact that your way isn't the ONLY way. My 88 year old Mother always took very good care of her skin but didn't trust Retin-A and she still has beautiful skin. On the other hand, my step-mother started using it in the early 80's and does to this day. Unfortunately for my step-mother, she looks all of her 88 years while my Mother could easily pass for late 60's to maybe 70. How we age has so many other factors involved that I agree with you when you state that we all just need to find what works for us. @Melissa55 I don't use eye cream either. I've heard and read over and over from some of the top skincare professionals that most eye creams are not that much different in ingredients than a good night cream. With that said, I don't really use a moisturizer too. I do from time to time but my skin is ok without as well! I think these women need to stop expecting definite answers to their skincare needs by watching videos or searching the net. It's out there, as well as your channel, for education or to help- but they need to realize it's not the answer to their wants/needs for their skin. They need to do their own research, see their doctor, etc. This is what worked for you and your just putting it out there for a reference. Thank you for helping and don't think you owe an apology to anyone! Your beautiful and it shows!! P.S.- it also boils down to genetics as well! If huge forehead wrinkles are apparent in their family for ages, it's likely they'll have them at a young age too! 😉

Thank you so much, Christina. Skincare is such an individual thing, Isn't it? And a lot of it will depend on a person's climate (for example I live in Tennessee which has a hot humid climate, which adds more moisture) as opposed to someone that lives in a cold, dry climate. Their skin is going to be drier. And our skin changes as we age too so we have to be ready to adapt. Thank you so much for such a great comment! Love, Melissa

Your skin looks amazing! Very luminous, soft and smooth. It glows. That is what I want for my skin. I also have been using the retin a for about 20 years as well. I apply the
retin a to bare, clean skin. I apply moisturizer on top of it but only on my neck and around my mouth and chin. Those are my two sensitive, dry areas. Interesting theories about not using moisturizer. I cleanse using the Philosophy Purity cleanser and a clarisonic every evening. In the the am I use the philosophy daily micro exfoliant. People tell me my skin looks soft and smooth but it does not have that luminous glow yours does. The luminosity is what I am after. Great videos though.

You are absolutely right about the moisturizer thing. My face will start to NEED moisturizer if I start using it in the first place; but one day in the name of minimalism I quit moisturizer and my face was unbearable for awhile until it stabilized and I haven't used it since. The same thing happened to me when I started exfoliating. I never had a problem beforehand, but my friend told me to exfoliate so I started to do so. Then when I stopped, my skin started sluffing and peeling like crazy because it was being lazy and thought I should be exfoliating instead of it happening naturally. I quit it for awhile and my skin looks normal again after stabilizing. Half the crap we do to our bodies is ridiculous and unnecessary.

He added that you may need it once in awhile, usually when there is drastic change to the temperature, you would have to apply some, but he prefer that the moisturizer has some retinol or acid to exfoliate your skin.
I am working on my neck and chest also but I am a bit more red and go through peeling. The skin is more delicate there, but I know it will get stronger.
I am dedicated to ZO Skin Health products and very happy with it.
You look so beautiful and I am so glad you took Dr. Obagi advice.

+Chris Harrison Chris I can't thank you enough for letting me know Dr. Obagi's thoughts on this. I was unsure what his stance was now with his new line. It does make sense what he says that it should do something instead of just moisturize. So many people are really impressed with the ZO line. I'm really glad he's still creating and helping us have better skin. Thank you and much love Melissa

+Melissa55 The only reason he left the old company was that he discovered that bleaching the skin too much and not under a doctor supervision was very dangerous to the skin. He brought this up to the Board and they decided to still approve that the skin care can be sold on-line, without having doctor's supervision.
This upset Zien Obagi and he quit. He decided to create a new line and changed a few things and since it is medical grade, he didn't want customers to have easy access to his products so that they could damage their skin. He strongly believe (through medical tests that support it) that Obagi and ZO Skin Health should be supervised by a doctor. Now, with the Obagi line, people who are not educated in this field are treating themselves with no medical supervision. He really could not stand for that.
Trust me, his moisturizer is very strong due to the exfoliation ingredient, but it is not encouraged to use on daily basis, unless the doctor told you to.

Hi, great vide, Melissa, I started Retina a the yr it came out (I think 1978) for cystic acne. I am 64 and STILL have oily skin and a occasional breakouts, so I still use Retina a. My skin doesn't look quite as good as yours but I have very few lines and wrinkles, except for the 'elevens' between my brows and slight nose-to-mouth lines (I was using Botox and filler--they're much better now, you can't really tell) as I'm an RN and was getting it done free from a Derm, but am now retired). My insurance will probably quit paying for my Retina a next yr (as if I will suddenly be 'cured' of acne) but I will find a way to buy it; I will be using it the rest of my life!

This is the 2nd video of yours that I have viewed. I stumbled upon it. I love skincare and enjoyed your Retina A story. What is most lovely about you is what comes from within. I think you would be a good pal. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Have you been able to hear which Retin A she uses? It's the 3rd video I've watched & it's not listed...?

@@Lucy-mf5gk I barely remember replying to this video. I've never used retin-A mainly because of the peeling your skin goes through and I am an avid bicycle rider and with retin-A I believe you should stay out of the sun. No, I don't know which retin-A she used.

Thank you for another informative video, I really appreciate them as I am still so new at using RetinA, Interesting theory about the face creams (it kind of makes sense) I have used your trick with the mineral powder and brush when I am peeling and it did work!
Isn't it annoying when you film a whole video and then it's not right, we would have loved you even with odd earrings lol
    Love ya lots xoxo

+SugarPuffAndFluff Thank you so very much, Nisha!!! It is hard not to use the moisturizers but they just really look so heavy on me. Yes it's so discouraging to film something and then something is not right. !!! Lots of love and thank you so much. Love you madly!!! Melissa

Melissa just let me say you look younger to me now than in your younger day pics 😃....I have just started my retina A use..twice now and I really wanted to use moisturizer afterwards but following you and another blogger I didn't. In the a.m. I was amazed that I didn't feel at all dry. The second use I peeled lightly but didn't feel the need for moisturizer.

You are so sweet, Melissa. We would have laughed with you if you had used the video with two different earrings.
You are so beautiful, inside and out. You were smart to start retin-A early. I'm 64 and have just started using something that's supposed to do the same thing. It's called Differin Gel. It used to be available by presccriptons. Thank you for your wonderful videos. BTY, you don't need Botox or fillers.
