My Win4 is my most used handheld. Ally and Deck are too large for my liking and I can't go back to not having a keyboard/mouse on a Windows handheld. Sweet little device.
How do you manage sleep and resume? I'm exploding my head and what would be the best way coming from a steam deck
Just ordered my WIN 4 2023 with the new 7480u chip. This video is crushing any doubts I had about my decision to buy it. I also got the new egpu that comes as an option, so i'm very excited to try out my new device in December when it ships 😁

How are you liking it?
I've been extremely happy with this device. You can pretty much crank most games to 60 frames and use the dead battery each hour as a built-in break to touch grass. I love my win4 with Xreal air glasses too
I need to get my hands on some Xreal air glasses, they sound so cool.

Great video, Aish! Keep up the great work!! I was going to sell my Win 4 after I got the Win Max 2 2023, but decided to keep the Win 4. Strangely enough I keep picking it up to play more often than the Max 2 (which I use more often than not for productivity/ work/ media consumption).

That's my concern with getting a win max 2, I like the idea of a big screen and powerful chip but I know the form factor isn't going to be as good.
So this looks very interesting actually. I might have to check it out real soon
Loving my Win 4. Steam Deck is great but is a bit too big for me, plus I love the convenience of Windows for more obscure homebrew games. I mean, Proton still does well but it's nice to not even have to wonder.
I agree, I love my steamdeck but windows still has an edge over steamOS.
It is awesome. I do wonder if they could make it a bit lighter and smaller. I definitely like the design better than the 3. I wish they would update motion assist. It doesn’t appear to be user friendly.
I don't think they could make it mic lighter with out losing a lot of the batter life, most of the weight comes from that.
There's a community update that turns it into a panel similar to what you find on other handheld PCs.
I really wanted one of these before I got my Ally but I got some fairly large hands so I felt it would be too small for me to play but the win 4 looks gorgeous. Maybe I'll buy one in the future. For now the Ally has what I need for gaming and emulation

I've started running a dual boot on my Win 4, ChimeraOS on internal and Windows on the USB-A port (512GB USB). It's been an amazing Steam Deck replacement, and I still get Windows for the occasional few games that require Windows. Overall, it's an awesome handheld.

@@retrohandhelds It works surprisingly well, even suspend-resume works. I used Decky for TDP controls, and emudeck + retrodeck to setup emulators. it's now basically a Steam Deck Mini.
I really wanted this when it was announced but ever since the Win Mini rumours surfaced I decided to hold off. I'll wait for Win Mini reviews before I decide on which handheld to pick up. The Win Max 2 will keep me busy until then
I can’t wait so I bought the old GPD win 4 with the 6800U I heard the newer GPD win4 has a 7800U or something but might be awhile before it is available in local stores so will just upgrade then

Great video. Your volume is mixed too low. Try dipping some of the lower frequency to give yourself more headroom and turning up your gain (or volume).

Maybe you can get the newer GPD Win Mini instead of this newer refresh next? But then again I really dont understand how people try to buy them all. If I had an ROG I'd probably just stop there until I needed to replace it.
The win mini looks interesting and yeah realistically something like the ALLY or the deck is more than enough for the majority of people.

Gaming laptops and even RoG ally are not so pocketable I can just carry the GPD win 4 anywhere in my pocket and a vr headset acts as the screen
I'm going to pick the new win 4 next year with 7840u this is the only 6 inches handheld you can get today with keyboard no other one handheld is like that and no the Ally is nowhere close to that especially in size
The rest of them are too big to get outside
I wonder if this comes with gyro controls. That'd be useful for a lot of shooters on Steam, makes shooting on gamepad nicer. But also really nice for PS3 emulation, if it can be detected by software.

The good news of a new version, is the older becoming cheaper on the used market.
An open box Legion go and a used win 4 are about the same $600-750..
Out of Win 4 & Win Mini, & Win Max 2, if I had to choose only 1 device for both gaming & a laptop device, I wll go for Win Max 2 everytime (I am relatively satisfied with mine, except the mushy keyboard). Having said that, Win 4 & esp upcoming Win Mini has been tempting me.
I really want to try out a win max 2, I'm not sold on the looks but everyone that I know that has one loves it.

I'm glad gpd is doing a refresh, the win4 has a lot going for it.
Love my 16GB 1TB Win 4, but I gonna sell it as I am gonna get the maxed out 64GB and 4TB in Black configuration soon, will slap many ISOs of PS2 and such on it, cant wait.

I actually end up just using it as a regular pc constantly docked with a big monitor it’s pretty fast for a small device
I was looking for it but at the end of the day I'll stick with my Steam Deck. Amazing community and support.
I sold my deck for the win 4 and it's night and day imo. everything just works because it's a true windows device alot less tinkering
I love my deck if it's doing what you need it to do then there's no point in getting a different device.

I used my win 4 a lot but i switced back to my Onexplayer mini pro. I have linux on both devices but the win 4 can't suspend and wake properly.
I haven't really tried Linux any x86 other than my steamdeck, I'll have to give it a go.
I just ordered the 7640u version on Amazon for about 800 which is around a 100 dollar up charge but next day delivery free, which is a far cry from ordering from china. I have other handhelds it’s just the form factor of the gpd and it can basically fit in my pocket, I just hope the 7640u isn’t too far behind the 7840. I have a deck oled and legion go so I’m assuming it’ll be in between them performance wise

How loud or hot does the device do when it's playing or emulating the more heavy duty games?
Doesn't get very loud plus I like setting up custom fan curbs on my handheld PCs so it's not bad at all. It does a little warm on the right side but nothing that would keep me from playing, just something that is noticeable.
I use it for perfect PSP emulation, no stutters, x4 upscaling, savestates, Full 440 Gb psp catalogue. Job done! Expensive yes but no Anbernic or Retroid devices required.
Some would say that's overkill but I admire the dedication 😂

@@retrohandhelds I call it fire and forget, it just works without messing, grew tired of anbernic devices being almost their but not quiet 100% especially x4 upscaling. It does PS2 as well, anbernic isn't good for PS2 yet.

What do you think about this vs the mini coming out soon?
I haven't had a chance to test out the mini so I can't really speak on how good it is, but ergonomically I can't imagine it'll be better.
Issue with these devices is the customer service and lack of it, due to this system being so niche.
I play some PS3 EMU on it, lots of PS2 run fine, Just Great.
Played some XBox Game Pass stuff.
Take this to office and no need to carry some heavy notebook.
It really is an awesome mini PC
I have a gpd win 3. Is this this still worth it or is this gpd win 4 is way more powerful? Because i love my gpd win 3 and i see no point into getting this other then the right analog stick being at the bottom instead of the top.
It's an upgrade in every way other than single core where both bench very similarly. As far as efficiency, multicore and graphics the 6800u is an improvement even more if you look at the 7840u version.
But that doesn't really matter if you're still loving the win2, it's only an upgrade if you actually need it.

Not everyone has money for these things, and when they do and buy one, then the next time there's an upgrade and then it looks like the upgrade is really great but turns out it's just more balanced. Not a fully upgrade like how the ps3 and ps4 upgrade. Thanks for the response again.
It looks great but all the handheld PC devices have a very short battery life.
That's the unfortunate side of it but it's improving, it does also depend on what you want to play for example some light indies you can get up to 5 hours, modern AAA games 1 to 1:30.
I’m still using my GPD Win 3 I actually enjoy playing older games better than newer ones on a handheld. There’s no limit to how many games I can play from NES up to PS2
I think we all get excited for new devices and forget how big the library of games we already have access to is.

@@retrohandhelds yes and I can say GPD makes some quality stuff in my experience. I really love older earlier Windows games like Need for speed 4 and OG Need for Speed Hot pursuit on here it's still very cool to be able to play those chilling on my couch
I sold my win4 6800u unit a while ago. Just didn't like the experience. I bought it because of the size and keyboard, but the screen is too small for modern games and the keyboard very awkward to use because of the controls being on the sides causing a longer stretch. I imagine the new gpd mini fixes that issue at the cost of it feeling very hot. Also the fan noise was very loud compared to the deck at the time and now the ally. It's also significantly less comfortable to hold even though it's smaller. I'm strongly considering the onexfly as I think it's the smallest unit you could get with a 7" screen. I won't go back to a 6".
I mostly use the keyboard for hotkeys so didn't really have a lot of issues with it and for the fans did you set any custom curves ?like everything not everyone's going to love it 😆.
For all the considerations made on this device, youd think minimally they would have optimized the windows UI to better suit the screen. I seriously cannot picture anyone using this thing for any actual everyday PC productivity, youd go blind trying to read tiny ass text, lol!
Still.... for what this thing is, its AWESOME!
The good thing is that it's easily dockable so it can function as a regular PC, for handheld use I would really only use it as a gaming console.

The fact that not a lot of people are buying this, and going with the alternatives makes getting one more nitpicky for me. Not alot of tutorials on how to set things up like Emulation, mods, proper settings ect...
Lots of people got one it's just we have so many options people move on to the next best thing, as far as emulation it's a windows PC so any guide that covers that applies here.
Slight error, they offer a 64GB RAM version of the GPD Win 4. Deffinetley going big and grabbing that.

I'd love to see a video that exclusively compared this handheld to the Vita, not to other handheld PCs. I take it that a lot of people would want to get it thinking more of an evolution of PSV rather than as competition of Steam Deck or Rog Ally. A Vita comparison is also more intelligible, as many people in the handheld landscape own or have tried a Vita.
There's really no way to compare them with any fairness. The vita is a low powered handheld from 12 years ago, the win 4 is a modern handheld PC that has more power than a base PS4 and can play big AAA titles.

@@retrohandhelds Thanks, but I don't mean comparison as assessing which one is better or which one to buy. As you said, that's an obvious point. What I mean is getting a sense of the handheld's "feel" as a point of reference. For instance, many videos mention that the Win's analogs are kinda small: and yeah, sure, compared to a Steam Deck or a ROG, they will be; the point is more whether, for someone who used a similar device like the Vita, the analogs would feel too small or just fine.

Yes there's a 7840u version coming in late September I believe.
How does it compare to the ASUS ROG Ally?
The ally is more powerful and has arguably a better screen but it's bigger and gets worse battery life.
So you think this is the best all rounder. Triple A games, emulation, etc?
Unfortunately no I still think the steamdeck is a better deal for the price, now if you can get this used for a solid deal yes definitely.

I couldn't help but notice that you made no mention of the joystick deadzone issue on this device which is unfortunate. Your gameplay footage of DOOM was clearly struggling.
That's usually something I would usually get into but this wasn't a deep dive review, more of a lets have a look and talk about it 😆 but I didn't really feel like the sticks were an issue or I would have definitely mentioned it.
@@retrohandhelds we can all see the gameplay footage in DOOM though. I felt that the deadzones were clearly having an effect on the gameplay. It's not all on you, but it's frustrating seeing youtubers mostly gloss over this issue, leaving the community to express their frustration with it. A similar issue exists for the ROG Ally but also not often mentioned by youtubers. It's pretty clearly a software implementation issue, but GPD has been slow in rolling out a fix.
How is it "struggling"?
@@LuisPerez-5 he was having a hard time just shooting basic zombies. That's the very opening part of DOOM 2016; if he was having that much trouble with zombies, the rest of the game is going to be pretty frustrating.
Gyro would help here, but is more involved to get up and running on these Windows handhelds vs. something like the Steam Deck where gyro ties closely in with SteamInput.

Hi I have some trouble with mine I'm playing GTA online and when I try and change the aim settings it is greyed out and i am unable to enable aim assist

To me this is the perfect portable workstation and I love mine. It docks onto my midi keyboard, and other monitors and I can work on my game in Unity use all major tools and have it in my pocket. I still prefer and recommend the Steam-deck for gaming, this is a pocketable handheld laptop.
I love hearing people's experiences with PC's like this.

If I were GDP I would stop trying to focus on modern / PC gaming and just do emulation and Android gaming. If they stick to emulation and cap the handheld at ps2, xbox, and 3ds , get Rid of the keyboard, make it thinner, get rid of unnecessary features, and improve battery life they could have the best throwback handheld device. Plus, down the road they could partner with the companies that actually do emulation to create a handheld device that's custom built from the ground up to handle ps3, and xbox 360 titles with great battery life.

@@realist3556 Why Can't it Happen now! They are building handhelds that can already emulate everything up to ps2, 3ds, Switch. If One of the big companies backed up the emulation teams or housed them under one roof you could create a handheld that could perform up to ps3 games if done right

@@realist3556 I would say its Low demand only because its not pushed out by big corporations but overseas emulation is very popular. Also, The handhelds now are basically useless for 2 hrs or less of gaming at 1080p for modern titles. That's why the nintendo switch and older psp models make more sense as you can game for longer and play older titles or remakes just for those handhelds.

@@retrohandhelds I was playing f1 / red dead 2 and mass effect .. it was soo uncomfortable I ended up selling it. Gpd told me even the new one gets hot like that .. told me to lower the tdp .. decided to sell it
Over 1k dollars. Steam deck is the way to go lol. If the 16gb 1tb version was at least around 600 ish dollars I might consider getting one.

Nice vid. I have the Ally so this specific use case doesnt work for me personally, but for anyone who wants a smaller screen and more psp-style experience, the gpd 4 is great. The good thing with the handheld gaming pc community (bar most steamdeck users) is that the community is prety pluralist and accepting. Seems the steamdeck fans are more "tribalistic" and trolly, probably because theyre on average much younger than non-SD handheld pc users who tend to either be older, used to pc gaming, or a bit more tech savvy :)
