Rossano Brazzi!!! If he were a handsome man, now he is one of the most handsome mature men in the world. And a very good actor, indeed. From Uruguay thanks for posting.
Brilliant even though I sometimes have a difficult time keeping up with all the plot and character changes. Discovered Inspector Wexford last year (2021) and have watched of the episodes since that time. Really like how we never see the gore or violence portrayed like other detective suspense stories.
Love the "feel" of this show -- the two police gently sharing a joke, disagreeing just as gently; Wexford's excitement about being in L.A., taking pictures of the Hollywood sign; the eccentric tics of the characters and the naturalness of pets. What a great discovery - thank's so much Paul Goddard!
This series is so incredibly amazingly shot, throughout, ON LOCATION, wherever it is taking place. All the interiors-- INCREDIBLE!!! no staging, just a slice of life as it is then. I can watch them a million more times just to watch the scenes and scenery.
Good directors. Script writers - oh dear, more holes in the script than a tea strainer - then again those were simpler times when we could suspend disbelief without consequences.
This was the first time I have ever watched an Inspector Wexford. I am a big Inspector Morse, Lewis and Endeavor fan, so no surprise I now have yet another Inspector mystery series to enjoy !! Thank you!!!
First timer here too - and finding that the primary location is in my childhood "stomping grounds," it won't be the last visit either... But oh dear what breaches of protocol, tsk, tsk, Wexford!!!
This series is ok but not comparable to Endeavor. This guy is annoying and the filming is poor quality and the story lines are too drawn out. The only thing this sound editor emphasizes is footsteps/// all of them🙄
I am from America and I have started watching British crime shows. I enjoy this one and Dixon of the Green or something like that. I also like Morse. I am not familiar with Lewis or Endeavor. Are these detectives or inspectors? Any other recommendations?
I realized I’ve seen it before. Still going to watch it. Love Wexford, Morse, Endeavor, Touch of Frost, George Gently, Inspector Lewis and Vera. All FABULOUS SERIES!
Rosanno Brazzi--amongst the world's most handsome and charming men...My mother had a crush on him (I'm 74). The actress who played Natalie's aunt--MAGNIFICENT! What a face! What an actress! This whole episode is a masterpiece. Every character is a work unto itself--even the waiter in the African restaurant. I'm going to watch it again, and maybe again.
That waiter (or at least, I think he must be the proprietor) is absolutely fabulous. I wish we had a restaurant like that nearby with such a colourful character.
Yes! Loved him in “South Pacific” & another I only learned of 10 yrs or so ago, “SummerTime” with Katharine Hepburn in lovely Venice. Everything you said & then some.
Saw most of the Ruth Rendell Mysteries many years back and am delighted to discover them again. THANK YOU for bringing them back. Now I'm reading the book with each episode concurrently and since the series follows the books so well it makes for a more complete experience. Rendell is a remarkable writer and the regular cast of the Wexford tv series certainly do her justice. Thank you again Paul.
I concur with all those mentioned below... brilliant productions, unique characters, orderly murders with very little violent mayhem, clear, clever dialogue and very few nude young things being savaged. Satisfies us all with hours of mannered murder.
Another excellent episode. Inspector Wexford was a wonderful detective, but what an irritable man. His wife must have had endless patience to tolerate his moodiness and grumpy behaviour.
Yes he is rude to everyone. Funnily he berated Burden for being irritable and yelling at his officers in another episode. I don’t think he realised how rude and entitled he himself always acts.
This episode from 1990: Fantastic cast! Good to see Rossano Brazzi in a rare cameo. Many great British character actors. George Baker’s second wife ( married in 1974), the actress Sally Home, plays the part of the busybody neighbour Mrs Murray-Burgess. She died, after battling with illness, in 1992. In 1993 he married “ Mrs Wexford” Louie Ramsey.
Fun - doing the LA trip. Intriguing characters gave it real depth. I like how Wexler is flawed and is aware of it. Yet still he is a super cop that we all admire. Just a great show.
Love ❤️ Love ❤️ this series, the English know how to make spectacular Murder Mysteries, and they seem so real with the Great acting …THANK YOU 🙏🙏🙏🇺🇸🎄🎄🎄
I just found Inspector Wexford. It is a lot of fun. There are fewer murders than Midsomer; which can have up to seven people murdered in a single episode. The first one I watched had a single murder that was free of gore and an autopsy. Wexford was easier to listen to and a lot smarter. I’m looking forward to watching many more of these mysteries.
This was fun. I like the plot twists, and the scenes in LA reminded me of 70's detective series made in America. I particularly enjoyed his pulling off to gaze over the ocean, found it very funny.
Believe it or not, I was in the same form at secondary school with Janet Maw who plays Diana (Sir Manuel's fiancée). I haven't seen her since that time, 50 years ago although I did know she had become an actress. She really hasn't changed one little bit to look at, although I suppose she probably has now, as this episode dates from the 1980s or 90s.
Odd. Wexford was able to up and go to California, know how to drive on the opposite side of the road, navigate an unknown city without a map or GPS, but needs Mike to give him directions to a storage place in England??? Still, great case!!!
Well, they drive on the right in continental Europe, which Mr. Chief Inspector presumably has toured many times. As to the rest, he's WEXFORD, after all. He can even drive a convertible in CA without sunglasses !
It’s really not that hard to go from left to right and if they don’t show him using maps, and asking for directions does not mean he did not use them( they don’t show characters going to bathroom and it doesn’t mean they don’t pee) by the way, my friend from Czech Republic traveled to California and managed driving and finding places better than me and he speaks no English! So, intelligent inspector like Wexford would do just fine for sure😉
I have memories of the ferry to France from the 1980s. And sitting outside in the cool night air , watching the coast of France vanish from site , yhevonly place I didn't feel sea sick..
The face aand the accent had me going for the film, Rossano Brazzi, such a good actor and so handsome, but always the gentleman in every film, PS thank you for this film couldn't work out who the baddies were until the end.
Thank you, another enjoyable episode. As an aside way back in the 1980s Ms Lunghi reported her Access credit card lost/stolen and I issued her a new one! I never met her but dealt with the report!
I just watched this episode for the third or I think fourth time. I really like it. It took Wexford to different locations. Sunny Southern California too! I thought I knew the ending, but watching it again, I see that I was wrong. I really like this episode! Thank you Paul. Hope you don't mind your subscribers using your Christian name, Paul.
I stumbled on the book in a coffeeshop, read it, re-read it, became absolutely obsessed, found this film.... ugh why why why do they always get the women wrong. Both Natalie Arno and Sylvia Wexford are described in some detail in the bool- Nathalie with her big "bell" of glossy black hair, and her deep BLACK eyes, Sylvia with her straight fall of bleach-blond hair, described as "pale ivory". Is that so hard to understand and get straight? Also the women's looks are an integral part of their characters and life stories! Argh! George Baker is pitch-perfect as the inspector, and I love the visualization of Pearl of Africa.
