Sparky was no stranger to this, seeing as his dearly departed mother was a victim of cancer as well. This adds a more personal touch to the special. He himself would also die the same way as his mom. He completed his final Peanuts strip in the hospital, right before he passed on.
Watching that careful and thought-through essay, made me cry again about this special from my childhood. Thank you for bringing it back to memory and show it to people who never knew about it
Cancer is a subject I think more cartoons aimed for children should tackle more often. Arthur did a cancer episode with the controversial Lance Armstrong later replaced with a fictional wrestler about cancer. Of course the special could’ve made Janice die from leukemia but that was probably too dark. It was also nice of Linus to stand up to Janice from the bully. Also given Charlie Brown’s bald as well it makes no sense why that kid’s acting like that’s the first bald kid he’s ever seen.
It's surprising how the special addressed all the symptoms, tests, and feelings and still managed to make the audience smile at the end. It's a true testament to Schulz's amazing writing and unforgettable characters!
great video, have you considered making a video on the adventures of prince achmed from 1925 it's a feature length animated film released before disney's snow white.
@@ItsTheGooseItsTheGoose You might also consider checking out the Max Fleischer movies too, since I think two of them were also before Snow White. I mean Gulliver's Travels and Bugville, both of which can be seen for free on TH-cam and Amazon Prime Video respectively
I actually have plans to do a video on a VERY old cartoon, but I'm putting in a lot of research since I don't believe there's been any sort of extensive coverage on it before. Hopefully it turns out as good as I'd like it to!
If I were to make one note regarding 10:52, the coronavirus didn't help that stigma. Because the world was in such a frenzy with all the crazy rules, social distancing, everything closing, and it was extremely contagious. And even this special was 30 years before 2020, kids who grew up during the pandemic will always keel that way subconsciously, even when they know better. Just like how we grew up with 9/11, and this decades long "war on terror" have turned our generation very cynical about things. Because our childlike wonder was stripped of us early on. And I would also say that just like people who grew up during the great depression always have that mindset. Even people who later became well off financially, like Elvis Presley, still ate like a poor person, even though he couod afford the finest food. Things like that stick with you.
Ive heard that the reason why they chose linus to play essentially the love interest in this, was because people were starting to think linus was gay. And it wouldn't be the first or last instances of people thinking peanuts characters were gay. Peppermint Patty and Marcie have long been rumored to be gay, along with Linus. People even think Charlie Brown might be gay. And theres even a group of people that think Schroeder is gay.
I can't speak to that rumor, but from what Jean Schulz (Charles Schulz' wife) says, Schulz chose Linus to be the main character in this special is because of how compassionate he was.
This special ALONE made me love Linus FOREVER.

Such a great legacy he left behind. This one is near the top of the list for me!

Thank you for saying that! And I hope more people watch the special, it's as relevant today as ever.
Does anyone else still get teary eyed watching this special?
This special reminded me of my grandmother. She passed away from cancer :(

That scene with Lucy was intense. They really did show many different perspectives that surround sicknesses and other circumstances in general!

I never got that impression mainly because of all the time Charlie Brown spent obsessing with that redheaded girl.
@@Attmay I don't think any of them are gay. They're just kids.
