12:11 You could have moved thru the tile that unit was on to the hill behind him. You cannot end on the same tile as another unit but generally you can bypass them. 21:28 They are patrolling around. City-State's won't attack you outright without some kind of provocation. 23:32 Nope no luxury tax in Civ VI. 25:24: It can be any of the other types of cards as well if you hadn't picked up on that. Truly a wildcard. 26:07: Not quite, you founded a pantheon. 28:30 This is a bug sometimes the game will update and say a wonder as been built for a 2nd time. Mostly happens when reloading a game (just right click it to make it stop clear notification). 29:44 The slots for Great Works of writing are for literal physical "Great Works" of writing such as a Shakespearean play. At 32:07 you can see the slots you have to hold great works in the panel you have pulled up. I never played Civ I or II but I imagine this is indeed similar. 43:53 This is actually a good choice. Pyramids is one of the best wonders in the game. 45:28 They are actually tracked on the panel you are looking at. It tells you on the bar how many you are accumulating per turn when you hover over it with cursor. 57:08 Actually no, harvesting/chopping woods/jungle is almost always worth the immediate boost to the yield. You got 65 Food from that marsh tile that can't have a farm on it. Now it can hold a farm and produce the same amount of Food it was previously as a marsh, plus you have the bonus food you got from the Harvest. 59:19 If the city already has fresh water access then it is only +2 Housing. Washington is on a river so it has fresh water. 1:06:20 The era changed based on all civilizations progress. So between you and the other civs in the game enough progress had been made into the tech/civic tree that the world moved into the next era. If the era changes and you are behind it then you are likely behind in the game too.
So much great info and tips! Thanks Stormy! That's so interesting that you can move through units that aren't yours, but, guess it makes sense since they're "friendly". I'm very glad to hear city-states won't attack without provocation! They're an entirely new thing to me, so for now they feel like neighbors I should be nervous about. I don't like having other civs on the map lol. What's the difference between a religion and a pantheon? But how do you aquire a Great Work? Does a Great Person you recruit create it? So far I've only recruited a Great Scientist and...General I think? They only provided boosts, but they're not artsy fartsy types to make Great Works... Pyramids were great in Civ 1/2, too. Too bad I was too slow :( When you say clearing a tile is best, do you mean only to clear tiles that don't have a special resource, like cotton, copper, truffles? Reading comprehension ftw lol I figure that out in Episode 3, I think. So much data, not enough memory cards. Is there some place where you can see how far the world is in overall progress, to tell when you might tip into a new era?
@@leysaplays Pantheon is just a belief that is for your empire and it persists for the whole game regardless of the religion your city follows. Religion is capable of being spread to other cities as well as other Religions can be spread to yours (and replace your Religion if you have one). Cities receive the benefits from which ever Religion they follow (see the Lion symbol beside Washington? tells you it is following yours) Just like Great Scientist gave you a boost for science, a Great Writer will give you Great Works of Writing. Best things to clear are Woods (production bonus; will work great at helping to rush out a unit or a Wonder), Stone (production), Rainforest (half food, half production). Marsh is up to you but if you plan on putting up farms on the tiles for their +0.5 housing benefit then you'll need them gone. Other bonus resources can be harvested like copper (gold) and bananas (food) but unless you plan on placing a District down on the tile (which removes the resource and you won't get anything for it) I would just improve those. Typically if you can improve it leave it and if it is blocking an improvement (marsh preventing farm) remove it. Luxury Resources like Truffles and Strategics like Horses cannot be removed/harvested. I am actually unsure how to see when the eras change in this version without Rise and Fall/Gathering Storm expansions. In those the tracker is found in bottom right of screen under next turn arrow.. It is possible I am incorrect and the era in the standard game is changing as you hit a tech/civic from that era (never actually played standard version lol). You can however see how you are doing compared to other civs by hitting "World Rankings" which is the little globe icon (left most of the 4) underneath where it displays your turn and year up in top right.
Hi, Leysa! I don't have anything to say about how your playthrough is going since I have no idea what constitutes doing well in games like Civ, but I'm really enjoying watching 😁
Hi Carl! Totally fair, I don't know what constitutes doing well in this game either, for now 😄 But I'm having fun, and that's the real measure! I'm glad you're enjoying it!
little advice from 5000+ hour player - make sure that you understand role of builders and their limited charges - you really need serfdom card (unlocked at feudalism) and improve all your land and chop all features ramaining on it, like forest, rainforest etc. That's why, in my opinion Teddy BM is good nation for begginer, probably one of the worst, because he is exception to above rule, due to his bonus yields on rainforest + extremely good synergy with preserves(preserves affect only unimproved tiles). Begginer friendly nations are Kongo, Hungary, Nubia, Cree.
Wow, 5000+ hours! Is this your favorite version of Civ? Thank you for the tips! It was feeling weird to not develop all the city tiles. That's the first thing I do after building defense in Civ1/2, to start improving the city and supporting its growth. I think all the extra was distracting me from what should be the basic concepts of the IP :) Though I'm still confused about chopping down all features. Why would you want to chop down bananas, or cotton, etc?
@@leysaplays You can oply chop down bonus resources not luxury or strategic. The reason you might choose to chop down them is getting boosts on food or production. lets say you want to finish a wonder as fast as possible, choping features like forest, rainforest, or stone would provide certain amount of productions which helps to finish things faster. or you want to increase your population, so choping banana or wheat provides you amount of food which helps for population increase. of course you are trading the value you get in the future with the value you get at the moment from that resource while doing so. It helps in some cases. sorry for my bad english btw.
@@leysaplays yields now are better than yields later - with amount of researched civics/techs chop value is scaling, forest for example give u prod, banana give you food. There is one more thing witch is scaling with researched techs/civics.. district cost. You can experience it when you settle new city in later stages in the game (like turn 150-200 on normal game speed), you will see that building campus takes you smth like 50 turns, which has zero sense if you think that at beggining of the game it was like 3-6 turns. That's because district are becoming more expensive. That's why you want to settle your cities as soon as possible to place ur disctricts asap (when you place district on ground the price is locked). You also need to hit certain population to be able to place more districts(you can place districts at population count 1, 4, 7, 10,13,....) , so here comes food chops. Do you know what is not scaling with time? Buildings inside this districts, they can wait, ur districts cant. Forest on in your land is free production which can be spent chopping them to finish your infrastucture, like districts, libraries, aqueducts, IZ, universities, markets.
There is very funny think in civ6, that having big science early is not a good move, due to above - higher science = more rapid growth cost of districts. If you are not in danger(war), you should more focus on early culture rather that science, culture gives you powerfull cards, like serfdom (more charges to ur builders, btw. cost of ur buidlers is scaling also, your next builder is always more expensive than previous one), discounts to units, governor titles, new goverments types and many more. i am more into multiplayer civ6 but concepts are similar, you can check this video, very comprehensive and might help to understand some concepts of the game, event in singleplayer: th-cam.com/video/ELxisCLDQAc/w-d-xo.html
Ok this is very interesting. I am not an expert in civ iv but I have played it good amount of hours and generally I know what to do. you are making lots of mistakes naturally as a new player (I cannot deny that I found them annoying :)) but I dont know why but I feel great when you figure out something in the game like I am proud of you when get things right :) Continue to give me more of this please. btw culture works for many things but I guess most importantly as you get more culture, you can discover civics faster. the turn needs for discovering on civic is based on amount of culture you produce. Just like technology and science.
