    Haven't even gotten through the first gadget yet, but I had to comment about the left-handed clock. My barber actually has one of these clocks set on the wall opposite the mirror so when you're getting your haircut and you look in the mirror you see the time in the correct fashion, always thought it was kind of neat.

      As an ambidextrous person, a bit like Barry, I've been doing it the same as he has and hating that my numbers are upside down - or questioning how I'm managing to use a tapemeasure wrong -- will have to replace my tape measure with a leftie one
      unnecessary context - my "dominant" hand is right but as I'm getting older and picking up new/random skills, I do more and more left handed - but my great grandma tried to slap the leftness out of me when I was a kid because she was of that last generation where lefthandedness was wrong and she looked after me as a tiny kid before I went to school while my parents worked

    I think the left-handed thing with the exacto-knives is in what direction the blade-retractor faces when you hold it. with a right-handed exacto-knive the thumb-push-thing is in the palm of your hands while the blade is facing down, with the left-handed knife the pusher is near your thumb

    • @jonjones8611
      @jonjones8611 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes, we use those box knives at work and they're made to be safer than other box knives. We use the S4 version, he has the S3, not sure about model difference. Red ones are left handed, right handed ones are green. The only difference is which side the blade retractor is on and which side the metal guard at the front is on. Having the retractor on the side where your thumb is makes it easier to open and close quickly. Also, the metal piece at the front is a thumb rest for topping boxes. When the blade is in the first position it only protrudes a tiny bit and doesn't go past the medal guard, making it safer to use. You then put your thumb on the back of the guard and can cut the tops off of boxes if you need to do that, but it's rare that I've ever done that. The guard also has a small notch on the end called a tape splitter. It's used to cut the tape on boxes without using the actual blade and, in my experience, works great.

    • @Mellow888Mood
      @Mellow888Mood 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Exactly. You can see him extracting the left one with his left hand and with the righthanded one, he first opens it with his right hand and then he takes it in his left hand. We are so used to doing that that we don't even realise it most of the time that it's different and more complicated to use tools designed for right handed people

    8:55 There's actually four different kinds of handedness: Left-handed, right-handed, "cross-handed", and ambidextrous. People who're cross-handed switch between their right and left hands like you do, and it's pretty common at about 20-30% of the population. That's different from being "true" ambidextrous where you can use both your hands equally well, but nobody who isn't a nerd ever hears of cross-handedness so the two get confused a lot!

    I'm a lefty that used to cut with her left hand, and since my brother is the same we used to have lefty scissors at home. But eventually I learned to cut with my right hand as it was more common for regular scissors to be available, and now I couldn't go back to lefty ones.
    As for mugs, the difference is that you can see the design. Most mugs have it so you see it when you hold the mug with your right hand. It's extra funny when bartenders go through the trouble of making you a heart design on your coffee, but if you hold it with your left they've basically just handed you a butt xD

  • @smwarneke

    Lefty-here.
    Left-handed bread knives in particular are a thing because bread knives are usually serrated on one side - the left side. The serration is meant to counteract the natural way your wrist wants to rotate up when using the knife. If you use a right-handed (serrated) knife in your left hand, it will exacerbate the way your wrist wants to rotate up. Having a left-handed knife with the serrated side on the right side of the knife helps to stop your wrist from wanting to rotate up.
    It's similar with scissors, not counting the ones with ergonomic handles. A standard, right-handed scissors has the bottom blade on the left, or inside and that lets you see what you're cutting while you're cutting. Using a standard scissors in your left hand doesn't let you do that and that's why things can end up curving or crooked. There's also some physics regarding pulling/pushing the blades apart. Left-handed people using a right handed scissors may slightly push the blades apart instead of pushing them together like a right-handed person does.

      I have recently bought dress making scissors from a well known brand that were labelled as left handed. The handles are left handed, the blades are not. They chew fabric. I'm much happier using my 40 year old Wiltshire scissors.

    • @smwarneke
      @smwarneke 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@katelawrence7445 That's unfortunately a common problem with "left-handed" stuff. A lot of companies will just reverse the handle/grip and think it's good enough, when it actually isn't. I hate that this is the case and that I have to pay more to get something that I can use properly/safely just because I'm left-handed.
      Personally, I'm so used to using a scissors right-handed that I don't bother looking for a true left-handed pair.

      When you' re lefthanded and use "standart" scissors you don't see the line you cut. Most lefthanded kids are holding it sloped (almost horizontaly) to see where they should cut. And paper bends over the edge making cut uneven. If you learn to use righthanded scissors at first (at the age of preschooler) or your right hand to cut lefthanded scissors would automaticly "feel wrong" in your hand

  • @SouthPaw1805
    @SouthPaw1805 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Left-handed scissors have a place when you're trying to cut along a line due to the different point of view, whereas using right-handed scissors you'll tend to cut on the wrong side of the line or find yourself veering off at an angle.
    In terms of peelers, I've got one from chef'n that slips over your middle finger and you support in your palm. Works a treat. Sadly they've replaced it with an updated version now, however.

    The left-handed Stanley knife has the blade control (to extend/pull back the blade) on the other side. We righties use our thumbs for that. In the left-handed version, you can do the same.
    It makes it a bit safer to use, I think, since you can pull back the blade when you're done using the knife, without having to switch hands or anything like that.

    Like you, Barry, I'm ambidextrous and I can only do certain things with each hand (eg, I can only use a computer mouse with my left) so I'm kind of cack handed with both hands. The major problem I had growing up was that I couldn't tie my shoelaces until I was in my teens because I just couldn't figure out how to coordinate my hands and loop and knot the laces properly and my school tie was the bane of my life. So, the struggle for lefties and ambidextrous people is real and anything that helps is wonderful.

Only thing I am still waiting for is a lefthanded pen that doesnt smudge your hand as youre writing 🙈😅 Back when I was in school at the age where we were learning to write, at our school they still used those pens with the little ink cartridges, (i believe the english word is fountainpen) and im not even that old(32), i guess our school was a bit oldfashioned still 😅
    Those pens are a lefty's nightmare. My left hand was always completely blue from writing even though they gave me a pen that was supposedly especially for lefthanded people. Only thing different from the righthanded ones was the outside color of the pen. 🙈

    As a lefty, I've always wanted to get along with left-handed scissors but all the ones I've tried have handles molded to the left hand and it's very uncomfortable for me to use. If I ever find left-handed scissors with rounded handles, I'd be all there.
    I also think it's crazy that he can use normal can openers without issues. I've never gotten along with standard, cheap can openers lol

    Yay, finally a lefty video! I could never use lefty scissors, so just pushed through with using normal scissors with my right hand. You get used to adapting as you grow up so I find lefty gadgets strange and difficult only thing I would like are lefty playing cards! My numbers keep over lapping and it drives me crazy as I can never do a lefty card fan 😂

    The blade is used for cutting the top of a box. Extend the blade to the thickness of the cardboard and the rest the metal guard at the tip on the top of a box. I used to use them at a factory I worked and was able to cut the top off boxes in a couple seconds. The left handed people that worked there had to use the left handed variety. I'm not sure I was clear about how it works. Sorry. Words are hard.

    My bf is left-handed, the biggest struggle for her has always been scissors, measuring tape and peelers (before the Y model came along) and things that has a "grip" pattern for your hand and fingers, those seem to be a hassle for left-handed....besides from that, such things as crochet patterns, usually just made for right-handed ppl.
    I can´t really relate to the issues since I´m right-handed so....but I´m glad that there´s an option now days!
    Anyways, I really do enjoy your kitchen gadgets testing, I have a lot of issues myself when it comes to grip and such, and I´ve found some life changing things thanks to you :)
    What I´m trying to say is that I really appreciate this series you´ve got going for us :) 💜

    13:30 That extra edge on the swivel peeler is for cutting out potato eyes and such. I place my thumb at the bottom of the potato and peel towards me. For me that is the easiest way to peel potatoes, but I use a "y"-peeler for everything else.

    Fun tip, the rounded tip on the thumb guard of the box cutter is used to pierce and "Cut" packing tape. Used the same style in warehouse days and that bit was a God send to save your blade from cutting tape on boxes and wasting the blades.

    I work in a grocery store and that "thumb rest" on the box cutter is for actually for breaking tape/opening taped boxes quickly. There's a bump on the end of it for tape. The blade is for cutting cardboard.

  • @billm672
    @billm672 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I worked for a grocery store for years, that left handed safety cutter comes in right and left hand. The guard and blade settings are for doing tray cuts, top cuts, and cutting wrap and tape on cases of canned goods. If you set it at the minimum blade extension you can ride the top edge of the case with the guard and just take the top off without damaging cans/boxes inside. The next is usually for tray cutting, removing most of the top of the box and leaving a tray for the goods to sit in. Helpful when stacking product for displays. The last setting, and longest is for cutting plastic wrap or tape away from cases or pallets.

    The left handed knife you had was designed as a box cutter. The metal guide at the end is designed so that you can quickly slide the blade around the top of a box and remove the entire top without cutting down low enough to damage the contents.

    I work in a warehouse environment, and those are the kind of retractable knives we use. The best way to use it is to cut the entire lid of the box by slicing at an angle along the perimeter of the box. When cutting tonnes of boxes to stock pick shelves, it is the only way to make your percentage.
