I have always loved Laura’s spirit. She still has the child-like wonder that screams “look what I just made l!” with a huge smile. Truly a positive force in the world.
Oh my god, you put into words a feeling I've had about certain people like Laura for years and couldn't properly describe! "Look what I did!" Thank you! Now I can really explain what I love about that attitude! 😀 Adam also has the quality of being one of the best people to say "Look what I did!" to! 😀
Holy hell in a handbasket!! Why have I never thought of marking up the back of my tape!! I've been building a desk and the number of times I'd forget if a measurement was to the underside or the top of the desk etc..... Genius! Absolute genius!!
I saw a meme recently about how having show and tell would be cooler now that we are adults with cooler stuff. This channel shows much we really need that. You never know who may share the niche interests you have!

Okay, you’re officially brilliant!!! Just ordered 3 for my crew. It’s a custom leather holster for your tape measure!!! So the worst thing one could do in the engine room of a faired and class-A finished painted custom yacht engine room is to drop one’s tape. Seriously - I love this. And it’s Quick Draw McGraw :) That’s a nod to Hannah Barbara for you youngins. If you could cover the rest of it with a flap so it makes no scratches to finished veneer while you’re walking down a tight hallway bumping into things that would be the ultimate.
I saw a vid featuring a triangular leather wrap for keys, with a single bronze snap closure. Something like that, stitched to the leather tab from behind could work. Or a design utilizing the tapes pre-installed clip? Or, for a different shape, have an additional oversized rectangle of leather with two snaps, for optional removal, that cradles the tape like a sling. Might have to play around with this myself, just for kicks. Like Laura said, “If you want, make one!”👍🏻
More of this please. I love Laura and Adam and both together make the experience many times more special. I also like that this is the second Laura/Adam tape episode.
"This is for me instead of mindless scrolling on TikTok." 100% yes. If you take anything away from this video, take this. Thanks for putting into words, Laura, what I've felt about design/building vs scrolling/TV for years! When you said you made about 300, I laughed outloud in a joyous and relatable way. So awesome! Thanks as well for sharing your design and thoughts! I learned a bunch! 😊
Adam, your face was a study in amazement. Laura, you showed more versatility with the Tape Mate here than you have on your channel. What a glorious and joyous meeting with your two. Thank you for this. (I've been waiting for this to drop!!)
Two of my favorite people in one video. I found myself still smiling for a minute even after the video had ended. The positive energy you each put into your work can be felt right through the screen. Don't ever stop being yourselves, the world needs you. No pressure 😂 lol. Thank you for sharing your lives with us. Your hard work is appreciated.
Two makers with child-like enthusiasm. It was just a joy to see them totally geek out over tape measures and see Adam light up as he tries the Tape Mate. 😁🤘
7:17 That's a pretty much universal thing. Remember sitting in the drive through of some fast food spot and the line was taking AGES. Ahead of me was this beat up work truck with random bits and tool boxes in the bed. Was zoning out waiting for them to move when I noticed something sticking out of the drivers side window. Was a tape measure. Then out of the passenger side? Same thing. Was hilarious watching each one slowly creep out. Few inches at a time and ya could see the guys in the cab turning to look at the other when it was his turn to risk another extension. Car behind me must have noticed it too cause when the drivers side tape finally collapsed I heard a cheer and an "awww!".
Tape measures are so important for anyone with a shop or house or things to work on. The size, durability, portability, and texture of the outside case are all factors. Love these geek out videos 😂
I don't use tape measures often, but that's because I don't do stuff at larger scales. All of my stuff is millimeter scale, so the most used measuring tool is calipers.
Hey Laura and Adam, I saw Laura's tape measure idea awhile back. This video inspired me to make one for myself and combine it with the Crescent Lufkin 16' tape measure that Adam showed in this video. Been working with it in my shop for a month or so and like the functionality. Just made two more to give to my cousins who are also weekend makers. Cheers and thanks for the great idea!
Who could of thought that watching two geeks talk about tape measures could be so cool? Great idea to hold the tape measure. Even better to watch two friends having a good time.
You know, I already watched your video making these, so it’s not really new information, but it’s so nice feeling like I’m just chillin with the buds Adam and Laura, love this meeting of the friends
This was such a wonderful way to start my day! I'm getting over (my third bout with) Covid (I work with the most germ-infested things out there: kids), and just cannot get up any gumption to get moving. Seeing two of my favorite, uplifting people, talking about something that excites them both was exactly what I needed right now!
So much to love here. i loved her video where she invented it. Yay for the maker tuber mishmash!! love the sharpie on the back of the tape too. and the shooting/measuring from the hip.
I love the shout out to Eagle Tools - it is the best place in Los Angeles, maybe even California, to buy tools. Adam should pay them a visit when he is in Los Angeles.
I recently had a carpenter do some door installations at my house. He uses only a folding ruler! His work is exquisite and his attention to detail is amazing. He explained his reasons for the folding ruler and it all makes sense.
I love the folding rulers. Only thing I don’t like is that the 2 meter versions are a bit bulky. So I have 1 meter versions in my shop. I use them for precise short distance stuff and tapes for longer measurements
@@laurakampf the half meter folding ruler on my keychain gets replaced once the hinges are so worn out, that it unfolds on its own. Still have one from my dad, that I broke as a little kid not knowing how to work the hinges properly yet. He had brough t one back from Canada, which he used and the paint started peeling off so some areas were unuseable. I dont have as many memories of tape measures. But we sure played the "how far can I get the tape out without collapsing" game. And snapping back with the fingers in the way caused several cuts, too.
@@ShaneB666 Assume they're talking about the folding end-over-end kind, not the smaller 24 inch kind. I hear that european carpenters (germany, netherlands, etc) use them a lot b/c they're decently cheap, light, don't wear out like plastic-coated metal tapes can, can do vertical or angled measurements easier, and can open a beer way easier.
My son gave me a tape measure it is a Makita 8m tape and the brilliant thing about it is that when you pull it out it's stays exactly where it is and won't go back in until you push a button Best tape measure ever Brilliant video two of my favourite TH-camrs
I love yoru videos with Laura. In fact, I just designed a 4 filament roll holder for my multi material Mosaic Palette that is based on your handy tape dispenser concept from years ago. Because I wanted to be able to swap them out individually easily just like you wanted to be able to grab the tape you needed.
Laura and Adam are like twins, born by different parent, on different continents, at different times, but still. Their childish happiness when they discover/invent/improve something is contagious. I want to see them buld stuff together, half of the time is going to be used to improve the tools and workshop, half od the time actually building.... And with their energy there will still be plenty of time to talk. Laura needs a camper for her truck, or a tiny home on wheels, or a campervan in the US too, start building!
I LOVE tape measures! One of my favorites I keep in my pocket all the time. It's actually made by Zippo and was made for Deutz (German Deisel Engines) when I worked here as a Warranty Engineer in the US operation (Atlanta) in the '80s. 6' tape, imperial and metric. As far as I know only employees got them. About the size of the lower part of a Zippo lighter (which I also carry constantly). Hey, Engineers have to carry tools ...
Seeing your designs in the wild! Right out of high school in the late 80s I landed a job doing color separations for a print company in TN. Back in the days of using exactos and rubylith. I did a series of boxer shorts licensed with college sports teams. I was only there for about six months. After that I landed a job in Key West checking mini bars at the Hyatt. Private butler, ha ha! Great title. I went into a room one morning and saw a pair of boxers lying on a bed. Had to check the label. It was my print! Not my design, but I made it happen! It was very exciting, but I was glad no one caught me checking out their boxers! Still a good feeling!
Laura! Haven't seen you in ages. I remember your video where you invented this device. I also loved the idea of attaching a pencil-sharpener to your tape measure. Very practical and super-smart.
Great point, I have a shelf of 25+ foot tape measures, but they are heavy and I rarely measure anything more that 6 ft. I have been tending to grab a much smaller tape that I can just slide in my pocket. The Tape Mate looks great. Good on Laura for coming up with a better containment system
Picked one up as they just showed in stock; Really a neat design/invention. Laura is such a treat. Her videos with Simone Giertz are always amazing as well.
Laura, I'm so happy to have you living in the L.A. area, and see you in San Francisco with Adam. I hope you're on your way to Mare Island for Maker Faire!
Great video, thank you Laura and Adam. I believe the tape measure is the only tool that's exclusively made for left handers. I'm right-handed and I always hold the tape container in my left hand and draw it out and hook the end on the object with my right hand holding a pencil and all the numbers are upside down.

Tape measures? There was only one.
There were four shown at half way through the video.😊
Have you seen the Farrand Rapid Rule?
