Three good presses of the button on a bottle of water is enough to get full carbonation. Also chill the water and the syrups before making it. You'll lose far less carbonation when combining them which will make a better soda and make your cylinder go the extra distance.

The reason the milk tastes strange is that dissolving CO2 in water results in the formation of carbonic acid. Thus, it will taste more acidic. In addition, milk is a colloidal solution, so it is difficult to carbonate. The small particles act as nucleation sites where bubbles of CO2 begin to form - this is not the case for a clean water solution. Similarly, this is why the other drinks failed as they contain small particles like pulp.

  • @Psykout
    @Psykout ปีที่แล้ว

One of the restaurant/bars I worked at, we used to make our own draft cocktails, some carbonated and some just pushed through draft with nitrogen. Honestly it's fairly easy and super accessible given the rise of homebrewing beer, there is most likely a store near you that has all the equipment you'd need. Initial startup cost is a little higher, but not by much actually.
Where these smaller units fall short is the gas - Soda Stream charges you 15$ to exchange a cylinder plus 15$ shipping (2-3 canisters is 7.50$ and 4 at a time is free shipping). These canisters are 14.5oz of CO2 per can as well. So even if you get 4 canisters at a time to avoid shipping costs, you are looking at 60$ for 3.6lbs of CO2. A local store that supplies gases will fill a 5lb cylinder of CO2 for about 15$. So yeah you are paying anywhere from 5-10x the price of gas using SodaStream canisters depending on how many you buy at once.
The kicker though is the syrups. Even if you get the BiB (Bag in a Box) cases that restaurants use either online or from Bernicks or something - it's still nearly the same cost as buying 2ltrs bottles from a grocery store per liter. As we discussed above - the gas is actually cheap, the main cost is the syrup plus the initial equipment cost. The only way to try and compete with Coke or Pepsi is to make a lot at once, and you're just not gonna beat them at that.
The only advantage you will ever get by attempting to make 2.5gal or 5gal kegs (best sizes for at home carbonation) is that you can make things other than sodas. Which Tyler showed you can do even with these smaller commercial units, you just get hosed on paying SodaStream on the gas canisters. So all in all, unless you want to make sparkling ciders, sparkling cocktails etc, there is no reason to buy a product like this.

I decided to buy the ISI brand instead. It is a stainless steel canister (some are glass as seen in old movies where they add soda to a drink in a glass). You can buy a small box or a big case of cartridges and you only add water to the bottle. Release the capsule CO2 by screwing it on the lid, remove the capsule, shake the bottle, and squirt into any glass that can have ice, bought or homemade syrups, or whatever you want to fizz that is already in your mug or glass. I'm not much of a pop/soda drinker but do get a craving and can make a bottle instantly. The canister stays in the fridge even when empty so it is always cold and ready to go.
What I like is everybody can have their own choice by adding the flavor they want in their glass and carbonating that. So you add syrup like Root Beer into a tall glass, spritz in some carbonated water, and add milk from the fridge and you get a float. You can even add vanilla ice cream to that.
I also bought the same brand that has a slightly different bottle and nozzle to make whipping cream instantly, with different cartridges. You can get creative with the whipping cream mix though, but so simple to shake and dispense whipping cream just like those bottles you can buy. Lots of TH-cam videos on the different systems for making sodas and whipped cream in case someone is interested in comparing.
Now I'm going to watch Tyler do some disgusting things with this machine.

I feel like the most major differences with carbonation in the machines is how they let out the excess.
I personally have a MUCH older sodastream, and it doesn’t let out the excess carbonation over time. As soon as you tilt the bottle, it lets it out, which leads to either disastrous, or amazing results. It has a much higher chance of exploding, but it actually holds the Co2 in a LOT better. With one of the newer models, you need a ton of long sprays, while with my sodastream, it only needs two to four good-length sprays to get the liquid fully carbonated.

Tyler, I bought my second SodaStream carbonator, switching from the useful and cheap one button model to the 3 button, electric edition.
Either 'soda fizzer' is alright, but I use mine when I run out of carbonated beverages because it makes most sodas taste a bit 'sharper' than what comes already carbonated.
I don't imbibe with alcoholic drinks anymore but I have wondered if, instead of using either soda water, 7 Up, or Coke to mix with whiskey, if carbonating whiskey would be OK, for the basic soda/whiskey, 7 and 7, or coke and whiskey?
Seeing as to how my neighbor is a drinker of massive quantities of Fireball Whiskey, would that be drinkable?
    Maybe sloe gin?
Anything that would be already sweetened, in the array of many different alcoholic drinks?
Have you ever tried a Purple Jesus?
Back while I was active duty in the USMC, I decided to try just one PJ, and, oh boy! I was gagging by the time I got to the bottom of the 8 ounce glass of PJ.
It consists of Everclear, which is 95% alcohol and enough Grape Koolaide to make the drink purple, and upon drinking the entire glass in one quick 'Down the Hatch' manuever, it seems to always make the drinker exclaim, "Jesus! What the **** have I just drank?"
Maybe mix the Everclear with sweetened grape juice instead and give it some CO2 using a SodaStream?
    One word of advice?
Do NOT try to carbonate a steak.
Just kidding. Go ahead and try to do that!
Although trying to fit a bunch of pieces of steak into a SodaStream bottle could be problematic.
Partially fill the bottle with steak sauce or catsup along with or without chunks of cooked steak, for carbonated condiments/and steak?
    There you go!
    Another challenge for you!
And thank you for trying the SodaStream out!
I am that unspoken requester of what you have accomplished!

Just watched this video. As to the carbonated milk, try a drink called " New York Cream Egg".
The name is somewhat misleading. No egg involved. It's made from "sparkling water", milk and chocolate syrup. Sounds kinda' strange, but actually tastes great. You can find the recipe on TH-cam, Food network and others. Give it a try. The recipe calls for a specific chocolate syrup, I just used Hershey's chocolate syrup and it worked just fine. Try it and see.

Carbonation produces a chemical reaction, it doesn’t just “make it fizzy” so the carbonic acid could be reacting weirdly with things other than water.

Carbonated water and juice are way more popular in other countries. Everyone in the US only seems to know about mainstream American sodas. When I lived in Germany, I would frequently enjoy Apfelschorle or other simple fizzy drinks. You can buy Sidral Mundet, a Mexican Apple Soda, at most grocery stores now. With the soda stream, you are better off carbonating freezing cold tap water and mixing in some fruit juice of your liking. The concentration of other components will almost always cause a violent reaction when gas is introduced.

Best way to use soda stream is for plain soda water. Or making flavored soda water with homemade syrup. I like to buy something like frozen raspberries, make a simple syrup out of it, and mix in just a little of it to give water some flavor. Best thing about soda stream is that water can be only lightly carbonated, unlike store bought, you get less of te co2 flavor and harshness.
If you want coke or something, bottled is pretty much always better and cheaper
