@@kyleward7417 maybe as art in minds of some normies, but crafting an enjoyable gameplay mechanic, or making fenominal map design can be certainly considered an art. As for the 3d assets, they are basically done with the same or very similar skillset people do modern CGI in the movies. And even if we are going for the story, integrating it in an interactive media in an engaging way, rather than through cutscenes, or some notes is harder and requires more sophisticated brain activity than that of just writing a plot for a movie. I would place it way higher both in terms of creativity and difficulty to pull off.

Going back and re-buying all the games I remembered from my childhood and the ones I missed out on in the 90s because we couldn't afford them was one of the best things I ever did. I thought I started to hate video games and that maybe something was wrong with me but nah new games just suck.

God of War Ragnarok was one of the worst gaming experiences I’ve had in the past 10 years. The dumb dialogue, stupid and boring ass plot, combat was meh, no gore, no brutality. They destroyed Kratos’ character and made him a bitch. I couldn’t wait for it to be over, first time in a while I felt I really wasted my money. Definitely one of the most boring games I have ever played, with the worst humor of any game

One theory I have is that modern gaming surprisingly has a lower player-count than we think. "Buh muh trillions in revenue!" Yeah, that can be explained because of MTX Whales and Soyboys who will blindly buy anything that has a certain logo slapped on it. Older gamers are flocking to older games en masse due to the inflation of the AAA market and with how saturated it's become. Hell I'm only 20 but I'm getting in the groove of playing Counter-Strike: Source now, simply because I don't want to deal with the bullshit that Saints Woke and games like it offer.

I was watching a Worth A Buy video a couple weeks ago, he was talking about how awful the gaming industry has become and how lackluster or even down right bad games of today are. There only seem to be so few great games being released annually in recent history. He then compared the amount of ‘great’ games released in 2022 to the amount of great games released in the year 2002. And let me tell you, I totally forgot and was shocked about the amount of amazing classics, gems and memorable games that were released in 2002. It truly puts 2022 to shame.

I think it’s because when it comes to brand deals, sponsors, and a pipeline to a job… gaming has every other medium beat bar none. Pretty sure there’s fewer movie reviewers that even get free screenings (or sponsorships) and I highly doubt comics do since they’re not really profitable. With games though, there’s a ton of ad money, and of course job prospects. So many reviewers or influencers get jobs in marketing or writers and game designers. What’s their qualification? Nothing actually, other than being a$$ kissers. Writing an article is not equivalent to writing a story, nor is running a social media account akin to being a game designer (girl who ran Rare’s account is now a game designer at Playtonic). When there’s an incestuous relationship where these influencers/YTers are hoping to get a bigger job at one of these companies, it’s not surprise they’re going to hold back on criticisms. TH-cam, Patreon, etc aren’t good long-term plans, and they want to pivot before they hit 40 and washed up so they don’t have to work at McDonald’s.

Honestly I rather play asura wrath then ragnarok because even with asura cutscene they were interactive plus the game is pure hype and it feel like your play and over the top high action episodic game with in my opinion one of the coolest boss fights ever.
I got into Yakuza this year, with 0 being my first. It's a bona-fide masterpiece. I have also completed Kiwami and Kiwami 2 at this point, but 0 is the best by a country mile.
If you liked hollow knight check out Rainworld. there is no adventure survival platformer that reaches that level of quality and ambition between indies or big budget games. 7 years of development and it has an amazing organic ai ecosystem and level design.
Something I notice with a lot of these "modern masterpieces" like a lot of the Sony exclusives is that they never seem to have as much staying power as a lot of the actual masterpieces of old. They come out and I hardly hear about them in any big way unless I look for it. Yet people still fondly talk about the twist in Bioshock, the eye scene in Dead Space, literally any Halo 3 mission or the atmosphere of Arkham Asylum.
A lot of modern games are designed deliberately to be as safe and inoffensive as possible so you can mindlessly consume them then move onto the next thing. A lot of shows and movies are like this as well.

It doesn't overly glorify the US military and you actually get multiple opportunities to kill US soldiers in the game I think we are way past the George Bush era of Hollywood Action Games. I would like it if people made games about the other sides of conflicts. Imagine a WW2 game where you only play as Nazi's, or a Vietnam game where you only play as the Vietcong, or an Iraq War game where you play as an Iraqi conscript. It would show the human side of the war and show that not every conflict is as Black-And-White as it seems. Sometimes bad guys do good things and good guys do bad things. That's just war. People fuck up and kill civilians from time to time. It shouldn't be ignored.

These mediocre Theatre Kids that we all universally despised in Middle/high school when we were young are writing for games now because theres more money in that industry than traditional hollywood. This is also why new games have short gameplay with bad mechanics/level design and are heavy on cutscenes. We are entering a new "Iron Age" of culture coined by Razorfist where the people care about games/movies/tv/comics need to get off their ass and start making their own stuff and collabing with others. Games will not get better until we make them better ourselves. The technology to make our own games and movies has never been easier to access. You can buy studio quality film cameras and audio equipment for only a few grand nowadays. You can start making games in modern game engines for a few hundred bucks of liscence fees and 1-2K on a PC witha beefy RTX graphics card. There is no excuse for us anymore.

Sony has long since died for me. A lot of people don't know it, but as early as 2014, if I'm not mistaken, it started with censorship and woke shit at Sony. California Sony.. They seriously banned a Vita game from appearing in the West because it was kind of ecchi to them. Also very nice that they didn't make that decision until the developers had finished developing and translating. for a studio that is very small, that was a big hit, of course Ultimately, the game came a little later for the switch. You have to keep in mind that a game is not allowed to appear on a Sony platform because it violates their 'guidelines' but on a fucking NINTENDO console and that worldwide and uncensored! Yeah, I've given up on gaming in 2022 and beyond. I gave up nearly about a year ago to begin with, but recently, I broke out my GameCube, N64, and bought a PS2 (games are super cheap for it + PS1). To those that say, "So you're running back to nostalgia?" No. There's actually a TON of great games I never got a chance to play despite having these consoles (except PS2. That's a whole new world for me).
I would also recommend you an OG Xbox. It has all the PS2 multiplat games except JRPGs but they run and look better, along with interesting and fun exclusives as well such as Jet Set Radio Future, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Gun Valkyrie, Otogi, Blinx, Project Gotham Racing, Conker, Brute Force, Crimson Skies, Ninja Gaiden Black, Dead or Alive 3, Fable, etc. This was before they turned their brand into a casual dudebro shooter with gamepass filler content.
Respect for still owning old consoles and even buying a PS2. I still regret giving my PS2 away back in the day but I was a kid who didn't know any better. I still own my Xbox 360 and will get a good PC to emulate some PS1/PS2 games I missed out as a kid. It's honestly still insane to me how bad Callisto Protocol ended up being. Been a long time since I've been that disappointed by a release lmao. Cause even when I hype up a game, the worst that usual happens is that it's either a really good game that's really glitchy or it ends up just being sort of an average game. Callisto Protocol's gameplay through is FUCKING AWFUL.

As for the 3d assets, they are basically done with the same or very similar skillset people do modern CGI in the movies.
And even if we are going for the story, integrating it in an interactive media in an engaging way, rather than through cutscenes, or some notes is harder and requires more sophisticated brain activity than that of just writing a plot for a movie. I would place it way higher both in terms of creativity and difficulty to pull off.

God of War Ragnarok was one of the worst gaming experiences I’ve had in the past 10 years. The dumb dialogue, stupid and boring ass plot, combat was meh, no gore, no brutality. They destroyed Kratos’ character and made him a bitch. I couldn’t wait for it to be over, first time in a while I felt I really wasted my money. Definitely one of the most boring games I have ever played, with the worst humor of any game

One theory I have is that modern gaming surprisingly has a lower player-count than we think. "Buh muh trillions in revenue!" Older gamers are flocking to older games en masse due to the inflation of the AAA market and with how saturated it's become. Hell I'm only 20 but I'm getting in the groove of playing Counter-Strike: Source now, simply because I don't want to deal with the bullshit that Saints Woke and games like it offer.

I was watching a Worth A Buy video a couple weeks ago, he was talking about how awful the gaming industry has become and how lackluster or even down right bad games of today are. There only seem to be so few great games being released annually in recent history.
He then compared the amount of ‘great’ games released in 2022 to the amount of great games released in the year 2002.
And let me tell you, I totally forgot and was shocked about the amount of amazing classics, gems and memorable games that were released in 2002. It truly puts 2022 to shame.

I think it’s because when it comes to brand deals, sponsors, and a pipeline to a job… gaming has every other medium beat bar none. Pretty sure there’s fewer movie reviewers that even get free screenings (or sponsorships) and I highly doubt comics do since they’re not really profitable.
With games though, there’s a ton of ad money, and of course job prospects. So many reviewers or influencers get jobs in marketing or writers and game designers. What’s their qualification? Nothing actually, other than being a$$ kissers. Writing an article is not equivalent to writing a story, nor is running a social media account akin to being a game designer (girl who ran Rare’s account is now a game designer at Playtonic).
When there’s an incestuous relationship where these influencers/YTers are hoping to get a bigger job at one of these companies, it’s not surprise they’re going to hold back on criticisms. TH-cam, Patreon, etc aren’t good long-term plans, and they want to pivot before they hit 40 and washed up so they don’t have to work at McDonald’s.

the steam deck and a few older titles (sekiro, yakuza, and hollow knight) really made my year.
I got into Yakuza this year, with 0 being my first. It's a bona-fide masterpiece.
I have also completed Kiwami and Kiwami 2 at this point, but 0 is the best by a country mile.

I played the original Shenmue, it was quite good but some things are dated.
There is a huge catalog of good games on steam.
If you liked hollow knight check out Rainworld. there is no adventure survival platformer that reaches that level of quality and ambition between indies or big budget games. 7 years of development and it has an amazing organic ai ecosystem and level design.
Something I notice with a lot of these "modern masterpieces" like a lot of the Sony exclusives is that they never seem to have as much staying power as a lot of the actual masterpieces of old. They come out and I hardly hear about them in any big way unless I look for it.
Yet people still fondly talk about the twist in Bioshock, the eye scene in Dead Space, literally any Halo 3 mission or the atmosphere of Arkham Asylum.

I think we are way past the George Bush era of Hollywood Action Games. I would like it if people made games about the other sides of conflicts. Imagine a WW2 game where you only play as Nazi's, or a Vietnam game where you only play as the Vietcong, or an Iraq War game where you play as an Iraqi conscript. It would show the human side of the war and show that not every conflict is as Black-And-White as it seems. Sometimes bad guys do good things and good guys do bad things. That's just war. People fuck up and kill civilians from time to time. It shouldn't be ignored.

its partly because the pseudo-artistic shitbags in film/teleivision are migrating to game companies. These mediocre Theatre Kids that we all universally despised in Middle/high school when we were young are writing for games now because theres more money in that industry than traditional hollywood. This is also why new games have short gameplay with bad mechanics/level design and are heavy on cutscenes. They want to make their shit movies and TV shows and the "game" part is interferring with their story.

You can buy studio quality film cameras and audio equipment for only a few grand nowadays. You can start making games in modern game engines for a few hundred bucks of liscence fees and 1-2K on a PC witha beefy RTX graphics card. There is no excuse for us anymore.

Yeah, I've given up on gaming in 2022 and beyond. I gave up nearly about a year ago to begin with, but recently, I broke out my GameCube, N64, and bought a PS2 (games are super cheap for it + PS1).
To those that say, "So you're running back to nostalgia?" No. There's actually a TON of great games I never got a chance to play despite having these consoles (except PS2. That's a whole new world for me).
I do think you should try any Nintendo switch game like tears of the kingdom. I wouldn’t consider Nintendo a lost cause.
