  • If somebody asks you to close your eyes and think of three middle-weight naked motorcycles, the Yamaha MT-09 SP, Kawasaki Z900 and Triumph Street Triple RS are all probably close to the top of your list.
But with all three looking very similar on paper, which way should your money go? Here’s our verdict!

I can’t decide for my second bike. Coming from a 2009 Suzuki sfv650. I really love the looks of the street triple rs and how light it is but I love the z900 and the looks of it as well. The Yamaha I’m not too much of a fan except the mt07 but I’m wanting a little more power. Ahh I can’t decide but I have a feeling my wallet is going to make the final decision. :(

Oesimarkus ...I had a Triumph Speed Four, which I loved and wish I still had, I sold it because of the nature of a 600 inline four. Too revvy and it was always insisting you rip the throttle. Superb braking and handling and lightweight.
Anyways, I was at the dealer when the Street Triple came out and I sat on it and wanted one bad. They are nice bikes, you will enjoy it. I think the triple cylinder motor is the best of both worlds. I also had a Daytona 955i. It was very docile and easy going when puttering around town. But get the revs up and it seemed like there was no end to the power. But alas I got tired of having to repair it. The newer models are much more reliable.

I have a 2018 z900...and in my opinion the bike really doesn't need the added TC and power modes. However in regards of staying competitive with the current technology afforded to the rest of the competition, its understandable why they were added. The TFT display is rather nice though!
The bike is comfortable to ride without question and being somewhat vertically challenged at 5' 5"...I can still get the balls of my feet comfortably on the ground. Street fighter torquey and plenty of top end when needed...the bike is so incredibly smooth with the power delivery that its just a joy to ride. I have never ridden the other two bikes in this comparison so I can't comment... but absolutely no regrets with Kawasaki. It's a great bike!

Coreano en España Molt Be ...I won’t deny that in any form or fashion, sure it does. There are many YT reviews that say themselves that the z900 didn’t need TC...and I simply agree. I have ABS...but Kawasaki obviously didn’t feel the need to add TC until the 2020 model year.

@@john3532947 I have a '17 Z and agree that TC isn't a necessity on this bike. The power comes on so linearly and predictably so that as long as your tires aren't showing wire you should be fine. I would like the new TFT though.

      @john3532947 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

personal take between the three (have ridden each)
    2019/2020 Triumph Street Triple 765 R/RS
the most expensive of the trio, the lightest, and my personal favorite.
when revved in higher RPM this thing is FUN! (can not be denied)
this feels comfortable and enjoyable to ride and looks sexy, it wants to GO.
BEST BRAKES in the business and has an autoshift assist feature
has the same handlebar controls as the new Triumph Tiger series
TFT screen is impressive, but does NOT have Bluetooth Connectivity
not really any downside, though on the R model you'll want to swap out the awful bunny-ear style stock mirrors and go with the handlebar ones.
I also strongly suggest the arrow exhaust to make it purr like a kitten.
*only complaint is the blinker 'notch' which is hard to tell if you actually have your blinkers on or not, and can accidentally hit the TFT screen joystick, this complaint forces you to look at your TFT dash screen to know for certain if your blinkers are on/off, which is slightly distracting.
    2020 Yamaha MT-09
The bare bones bike that lets you focus on the road without any distractions
The blinker paddles are THE BEST (love the style for switching lanes)
the dash screen is OUTDATED, digital black and white very basic.
The MT-09 bike packs a punch and you can feel the thrill, exciting to ride,
HOWEVER it is NOT FORGIVING at all, it will let you know if you make a mistake, which can cause a rider to be a bit nervous with how the back wants to kick out on shorter stops. if you're a beginner/novice/intermediate rider this bike can make for a scary moment in a pinch decision situation, if you're an expert enthusiast it might not affect you as much.
a solid review of this bike sums it up the same as I would agree with:
"the suspension wasn´t so great. It still felt a little soft and made you a little doubtful when the time came to really push the bike. Despite the fact it was at its hardest setting, I felt some awkward movements. I am not saying it is a dangerous bike, but it still needs some work in that department.
    - safer-turn.com/article/the-yamaha-mt-09-too-much-for-city-streets/
    2020 Kawasaki Z900
They did a great job updating the TFT dash display (not quite as nice as the Triumph but simple sometimes can be better, and it does have bluetooth with the kawasaki app which is a nice bonus).
The 2020 is quite a bit nicer overall then the previous years, it's noticeably better (where as for example comparing to the Street Triple or MT-09 where the past few years there were minimal differences barely noticable between 2018/2019/2020). Oddly this bike feels shorter when riding, likely due the riding position is more of a forward lean than in comparison to an upright cruise position and the short tail. It's the heaviest of the 3 in exchange it packs the most power.
the choice comes down to personal preference.

Agree, and they harp on about being able to see it in direct sunlight but any traditional dash can't be seen in direct sunlight either.. However, the old dash of the z900 was horrible, to the point were I suspect it may have lost some sales cos the middle weight category is full of very similar spec'd bikes that are all awesome. None of them had really bad point's except for the dash for the z900.

Great review and comparison. I'll be interested to see how the new KTM 890R stacks up against the RS.
I have a 2018 Street Triple RS and love it for the track and the road. I've found adjusting the suspension for the road and track essential to my enjoyment of the ride for both. Legs are a bit cramped for road and tires are not great in wet conditions. I would add that the sound the RS makes, the brakes and it's agility are other reasons why I love it. There is something the soul of a bike when you live with it that is hard to capture.
I've owned the 900 engine in a different bike, and while it had great power, reliability and ran like a champ, it just didn't stir my soul in the same way as the RS.

I did a test ride on the Mto9, the front end is not confidence inspiring at all, it might be fun for some people to wheelie. but when the front end comes back down the bike never feels planted or stable. and the feedback from the front end is very vague. as soon as you get up to any kind of higher speed the bike has a feeling like the front wheel is barely touching the ground. there is no feedback from the front of the bike. I really can't believe that so many reviews of this bike just overlook this. to me it is a major design flaw and I would never buy the MTo9 because of it. I used to own a 900 Ninja years ago and the bike felt stable as a rock at any speed. and I would bet the Z900 is the same. and from what I hear so is the RS.

The KTM 890 R is better (on paper) on quite every aspect than the RS, and KTM do know how to make bikes.
But a test ride is better to know (comfort etc)
They are equally ugly too, in my opinion - awfull front for the Triumph, awful tank for the KTM. ... But except for its front, the Triumph is nice.
I think although Triumph will have to upgrade soon the RS, or to lower its price (as it has been already upgarded this year), because of the 890 R coming (except for, if KTM did big mistakes on ity, but ...)..
I did test the RS, good little bike, just lacking of torque at low revs - but there is still enough for beginners. Some default like the rear brake, the place of the front flasing light, the too large drive bar with the already a bit bended position, etc.
But globally good bike, and I may buy the R version (because of the torque displacement, the RS feels like a 4 cylinder, it's said the R has a true 3 cyllinders character).
I'll soon test a 790, as the 890 R is still not there to try it... just to have the taste of the incredible 2 cylinders KTM is able to create, for a good price ...

I've ridden all 3 and I 100% agree with this comparison. Although I didn't ride the SP version of the MT. The Z900 has a dream engine for the road. I have a 1190 and the instant torque of the z900 is comparable to my big vtwin except the z900 pulls hard from low in the rev range so you can be super lazy and still be super quick. Top end isn't as exciting but still too quick for legal street use but that's were the street triple shines. I'd go the z900 cos of the price and perceived quality of the plastics and paint is very high for such a cheap bike, especially now it has the new dash and traction control (just need QS now Kawasaki). However the STRS is amazing. If it wasn't my money I would have the STRS (just) but I just don't think it's worth the extra $$ over the z900 and I prefer the engine of the z900 anyway.... MT09 just didn't do it for me.

The Z900 is an excellent bike, but I tried both and did not like the finish.

    what about KTM 790/890?

Is the 890 about yet? The kawa has 948cc and 4 cylinder. It is a far stretch to compare with a 790 twin

The GSXS-750 should have been in that line up really. No, it's not the most modern with the latest brakes or the fanciest, newest dash, but performance wise as a package it shouldn't have been over looked, especially as its cheaper than the rest. At circa £2k+ you could fit a quickshifter for £350. It doesn't have the outright power of the kawasaki or the Triumph at 114 bhp, but it doesn't need it. Also, no mention of the KTM 790...

@Rod Rebman not so sure about that, on the dyno I bet they wouldn't look so apart.

After owning a Tracer I would never buy another Yamaha again. After protecting it with ACF 50 and use of F365 the bike after 7 month rusted before my eyes/ Washed and protected after every ride the shock was changed under warranty due to the rust .The clocks were changed due to condensation I could not get rid of it and lost 4 grand after owning it for 9 months

I own a 2012 Street Triple but if I was buying right now I think I'd go with either the Z900 or the MT. You get a lot for your money and finding dealers and service and parts would be much easier. I love my Street Trip though. When I bought it, it was really the best bike out there.

Excellent video 👍🏽 All 3 are great bikes. I bought a 2019 Z900 in April ‘19..... love it !! The 2020 has some very fine refinements. Maybe next year I’ll “trade up” to a 2021 Z900..... or 🤔.... what the heck, I just might go for the H2 👀...... 😁

Street Triple is a track day fun. But for everyday, city, open road/twisties or highway use, it is not the bike you would want to go for. You might regret having one for these exercises.
Hard seat, small seat area, tightly curled leg position, engine heat and mid rev demand are things you need to consider...

Undoubtedly the remapped Mt09 will exceed 240 km and is the bike that will ride better with a rump ...... Triumph is a bike that is perfectly built with extremely aggressive brakes ... The Z900 has a solid traditional name 3 super bike ...... the choice is just a matter of taste.

@@ev_an_8898 Although the Yam gives a bit of toy looking , fake plastic feeling, is the "less bad" for me, at least considering the front of the bikes, wich is quite ugly for the Trimuph and the Kawa. Considering the rest except for the front, I may prefer the Triumph.
