  • Tech this out Meow sent us some test samples of he constructed that he claimed would stop rifle rounds. We put the three different types of plates to the test and were surprised at the results.

    Thanks for testing those plates Taofledermaus! Yeah, using a full piece of steel would be more effective than those strips,that was all I could find at 3/16 in thickness. I'm trying to thin out the plates by annealing the HDPE, and that has shown some interesting results. I need to get me a 10mm, that looks like a sweet gun.

      You want to use Fiberglas yes, but as a air gap 'it will sound strange', with Epoxy the one meant for cars works pretty good... Carbon Fiber sheet "you can find for cheap" 2 platted woven.
      you want to layer at least 3 carbon layers, 2 fiber glass layers in the center ish, the back carbon fiber against Kevlar or "steel" that is then epoxied to the final carbon sheet.
      You will have a solid, somewhat light, but Certain Armor piece!
      Elaborate the layering is
      Outer Covering'carbon fiber is itchy your choice, Carbon Fiber, Epoxy, Fiber glass, Carbon fiber, Epoxy, Fiber glass, Carbon fiber, Steel plate or you can use Kevlar, Rubber/contact finishing surface.

    • @Stigstigster
      @Stigstigster 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @akjohnny I hate the idea of carbon fibre in there. That stuff is nasty when damaged. I recently picked up a broken carbon fibre arrow I'd shot and immediately dropped it again after it put many nasty little fibres deep into my fingers and it took a painful 20 minutes digging with a razor blade and tweezers to get them out. If you don't work extremely carefully they work their way deeper into your flesh very easily. I was even worried I was going to lose track of some of the pieces. I know that carbon fibre might help to stop projectiles but anyone touching the armour afterwards (like a medic) will get full of very nasty little splinters of the stuff.

    • @volvo245
      @volvo245 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Stigstigster the stuff it releases to the air is pretty much as bad as asbestos. They really should do PSAs or something on CFRP and its proper handling. Its getting more and more common these days.

      I'd be avoiding all the materials likely to break into micro particles to avoid health issues but make more 'ghetto armour' and submit it and opt for a steel plate rather than strips if possible. Cross layering metal strip and epoxying them could be an idea to try.
      Keep up the ganstgah engineering, the world needs gangstah engineers... We'll need them after something like a virus, bomb, hegemonic power wars or dysentery eventually kills most of us off hahaha!

      Circumstances decide what is better, not the material. Titanium and carbon fibre are thrown around like top trump cards. Change the environment they're in and they suck depending on the application. Polymers change a lot by their process to fit the application while they stay similar. Ultra High Molecular Weight PE is better suited for abrasion resistance with low friction like some gears, in implants and use in safety ropes.
      HDPE is much more versatile cause lots of production processes can make use of it. It can be welded too.

    I've seen many of these homemade armor plates, so far these are close to the best if not the best I've seen. A few things I would suggest would be to either place the ceramic plate inside the plastic about 1/4 or 1/2 inch from the front, it would help the ceramic to hold together a bit better. Also At the half way point of that plastic thickness or about a 1/2 or 3/4 inch from both sides, add some fiberglass or fiberglass over a fine wire mesh or plate steel with several coatings of a real good bed liner like they use in Pickup Trucks. I've seen the bed liner coating over ceramic plates and with combinations of a thick tight wire mesh and cloth or fiberglass. Some hold up real good. That might even work with those Chinese fiber boards to increase the effectiveness of stopping bullets. The combination of the thick wire mesh, fiberglass and bed liner help form a pocket like the kevlar vest material to help slow the and spread out the impact.
    I kind of wonder if some of those combinations might work with that Flex Past that forms a rubber.

    I do think that the .308 and 6.5 would have made it through the steel plate if the plate had not been ripped out. Lots of energy lost from shrapnel flying out the bottom of the armor as well as the steel taking the energy with it when it left the pack.
