I can't imagine a ballistics vest or a helmet saving someone hit by this, am I right in thinking this would pass a significant shockwave through someone wearing such armors?
Voidindiga I think the primer is meant to detonate on a hard target. I’m not sure this would be hugey different on a soft target unless they had hard armor plating or a stiff helmet like you said.
Unless they are wearing a trauma pad behind the plate odds are yes it will kill due to the force of the round amd the explosion hitting you. Even with a trauma pad there is a chance it would still kill.
@@jeremylim2421 the original concept yes, because of low initial velocity and very high cost of ammo manufacture. Bolter rounds are two stages, so they leave the barrel at normal velocities but keep acelerating after that.
Yup. This was definitely not the effect caused by a HESH (HEP in the US) round. More like an old fashioned SAP-HE type. A HESH round uses a base fuse and spreads itself across the the target armor plate. When the fuse detonates the explosion sends a shock wave through the armor, turning the interior face of that armor into high velocity fragments. An odd effect of HESH is that it is more effective when fired from a rifled barrel. It’s why the UK still uses HESH while almost every other major tank producing nation use smooth bore cannon firing shaped charge rounds (HEAT).
"That's not a slug............ THIS IS A SLUG!" 💥 A game changer? I'd say so. Well done to Jerry for producing that slug & also to Jeff & Danny for another awesome video.
Ian Macfarlane it is hardly a game changer. I doubt it would be very useful in many applications. They are more dangerous for the user, as they have the rim of the .22 on the end, and are more complicated, meaning more things can go wrong. It explodes outwards from the target, meaning it wouldn't be very useful against armored targets, it is a huge overkill for infantry targets, so its only use would be for use as a antimaterial slug for unarmored targets. And to put the nail in the coffin, it is clearly against the rules of war!

That round is definitely bad ass. Love the devastion on the lead plate. And has very good stability. Great design and great video. Keep up the good work
This is incredible!! You should’ve put fruit behind the lead targets and possibly steel ones because hesh/squash rounds are designed to cause spalling on the backside of armor to fly off and do damage to what ever is behind it without necessarily punching a hole through, I’d love to see the damage inflicted by shotgun style hesh rounds to soft targets behind plates, either way amazing stuff!!!

Sovereign Sentience Thank you sir! I was going to try Syria, but it turns out there are quite a few Syrians there so that plan was a no go. We just had to “suitcase” the drugs over from Greece. See you soon.
For future reference: get yellow tipped blanks. They have more powder. Completely avoid grey and brown, they are the weakest. Or if you can find them, get red or purple tips. Purple are the most powerful.
My friend thought it would be a good idea to put a live 22 round in the tip of one of these slugs. Let's just say his family doesn't have to spend money on him anymore.
There might be one thing to do to make it slightly more stable in flight, though it might lead to slightly lower speeds. When you look at 0:50, you can have a 4 degrees angle on each of the feet touching the scale/floor, and make it so it's perpendicular to the rifling, so the explosion also helps rotate the bullet in the chamber, which would likely work well with the rifling.
This round is amazing. Having a .22 bullet to prime the inside of the cavity is insane. Flight from the rifled shotgun adds another degree of destructive effectiveness to the round.
Danny, my favorite shooter. Can pick the fuzz off a peach down range with a shotgun. This video was one of my favorites. Liked the destruction of the targets with smoke and fire.
Reminds me of the co2 cartridges that I brazed fins onto, then filled with the back 1/2 of strike anywhere matches and the tips under a shotgun primer in front, all separated by a wad. Flew real good, and punched a 3' hole in the handball courts at the school a block away , one summer. Used a 1.5" pipe for the launcher.
Some loaded .22 blanks backwards in the nose of their slugs in the Civil War. Apparently without great success, as the practice was rare. Always wanted to try it with a 12 ga slug. Now I've seen & know it would add little w/o explosive inside. Thanks for the vid !
Interesting round but I don't see the relationship to a HESH round. It would be much more accurate to compare it to conventional High Explosive (HE) projectile. The Key feature to the High Explosive Squash Head (HESH) rounds are that they contain plastic explosive that squashes onto the target before a delayed action fuze sets off the explosives causing a spalling effect on the inside of the armor. This round has no flexible explosive material or delayed fuzing.
Hesh rounds weren't timed. Strict impact detonation or they would just blow the slug backwards off the armor. They need the force of the traveling slug to send the charge through armor
@@tellrowland5203 Not timed - but a delayed base fuse - to let the plastic explosive smear out, creating a larger area, before it explodes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-explosive_squash_head
@@tellrowland5203 Tell Rowland you clearly don't know what you're talking about. HESH rounds have a fuze specifically designed to delay detonation (by thousands of a second) for a very specific purpose. This allows the explosives to smash out (why they are called Squash Head) onto the armor prior to detonation. The idea that if they had a delayed fuze it would cause them to "blow the slug backwards off the armor" is ridiculous. There is no slug in a HESH round. The only real anti tank rounds that use their velocity to do damage would be a solid metal anti armor round or a SABOT off the top of my head. Explosives detonate much much faster than the velocity of the round flying through the air. RDX has a detonation velocity of 8750 m/s. A SABOT fired from a tank (traveling much faster than a HESH) only goes about 1600 m/s. That added energy is trivial when compared to explosive detonation velocity. My background is as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team Leader and instructor in the US Army. What background knowledge do you have that leads you to believe my statements are incorrect?
My basis is that the creator of the hesh round called the charge a slug. As a slug is usually an object transported by another. Not just a projectile. And you forgot the railgun but thats more recent and can do more impact damage than almost any explosive outside nuclear. My basis is curiosity. enjoying engineering and chemistry. Nothing more. I did double check my info thought and believe my point still stands. If it was delayed with a fuse(not just insulated from impact) the high explosive would concentrate most of its energy away from the tank.
This does more damage the thicker your armor plating is. It'd turn your armor into lethal fragments. You'd need to wear that there lead plate to stop it, and even then it'd hurt lol
The Triggerati would they be able to do that tho? At least in my state it's legal to buy but not to use so if that's the same everywhere how could they sell it without a warning.
The slug is more of an APHE effect than a HESH one. With HESH, you have actual plastic explosive inside a thin metal casing that squashes against the surface and goes boom (thus squash-head, with the intention of transmitting a whole hell of a lot of shock, but not perforating. APHE is more simple, Punching through the armor, which sets off the fuse for the explosive and detonates that inside. It looks like these slugs are punching through and then exploding, thus the significant lead shrapnel.
Does it induce spalling like a regular hesh round where it throws off a chunk from the inside of said armored tanker vehicle that's what I'd like to know looks pretty sweet
I was late watching this episode but it didn't spoil My enjoyment , awesome performance with the improved model (though both are almost certainly NOT legal in the UK !), visual flash seen on slo-mo would be spectacular after dark .Just like the slug it(getting better all the time ) yet another awesome & spectacular episode from TFM . TAOFLEDERMAUS I haven't read the new YT terms but could be considered "gun related equipment" by some mean spirited person. Lawnchairs that are extra sturdy for outside work such as pushing things around a table on the other hand ... (provided you don't mention anything banned about those things).
Glad to see they were able to improve them! It's such a cool and unique slug that i'd hate to see the project fade away due to poor flight and retooling cost / issues.
Id like to see this shot against body armor and a ballistics dummy wearing it. This way we can see the force being pushed through the armor into the target.
Ace the fragmentation of the slug would most probably hit the targets face rather than go through the body armor. Still would be extremely debilitating or even deadly
It would turn your insides into a mush even if it doesn't go through anyways. I doubt you could survive the internal injuries unless you were wearing an AR500 and trauma pad behind it...
I think WarAce has the more likely outcome if it were to hit a ballistic plate, like the military E-SAPI. That is a lot of lead that might not get caught in the plate and could "skip" up in to the throat and jaw. I can totally see it causing internal bleeding vs. simple kevlar, but that is not a lot of explosive. With quick care it might not be fatal if it doesn't rip through the kevlar during the explosion. I think just kevlar would fail during the explosion though. Would be interesting to see.
Haha, so glad someone else was on the same wave length! Started watching your videos, saw the "Top 10", started thinking, and figured someone would have thought of the same, or very similar idea that I had: here it is.
Id love to have some of these rounds as well as some 6.5 creedmoor rounds just like it .... always wondered why dnr doesn't allow exploding arrows or bullets to hunt with ..... I mean you'd have less injured animals running around during hunting season.... hell the 12 gage round even a gut shot would destroy the insides no running no tracking
I just came back to this vid too watch a couple videos with Dan, rest in peace you help this channel grow beyond y’all’s wildest dreams though thank you!
HESH stands for High Explosive Squash Head round, which has a plastic head and an HE base of the round. The round works by impacting the enemy armor and the head squashing, taking as much surface of the amor plate as possible, then the High explosive base detonating and sending shockwaves through the plastic head into the armor plate that make it shatter and shrapnel from the inside. A very interesting concept, sadly this round doesn't really work in any way a HESH round does. It's more of a APHE round if you ask me, an arour piercing round with a high explosive inside. Anyways, good video excellent high speed footage!
It can only be hesh if it sticks hesh stands for high explosive squash head for those that don't know. It's purpose is to stick to tanks and expload on the outside sending a shock wave to send shrapnel from the inside to the crew. This is more like a HEAT shell high explosive anti tank
If you can cast it from steel you could load a percussion cap either on the tip or inside the round and add some high temp burning powder (aluminum or magnesium) jacketed in copper so that the .22 would actually drive molten metal into the target like a real Heat round
@@terra20209 Knowing this is nothing special, either you are really interested in tanks and just know from research or you played world of tanks where you can use the mentioned above shell types.
HESH rounds contact the armour and squash against it (its in the name). the fuse is in the base of the shell, and only detonates after its driven forward and contacts the armour/structure, which is a fraction of a second after t he main shell hits

Please retest these rounds on more soft targets like ballistic gel in a few different sizes and thicknesses and some with artificial bone like material molded inside also. This would be something everyone would want to see and generate a ton of views too.
Would have been nice to see what happens if this was shot at multiple sheets of drywall setup in apartment style setting. This might be a really good home defense round because if: 1. you hit target they are down. 2. you miss target it hits drywall it explodes on first sheet and bits lands and stays in second sheet, which means no over-penetration, which is what you want in home defense round.
Shoot a feral hog with this and it disintegrates into loin, chops and sausages before your very eyes. What a cool round....I'm not sure how practical it is, but definitely fun. I was a little worried on the lead plate that it was going to throw shrapnel back at you, though. That is a hazard of exploding projectiles.
Its always a risk. Energetic materials often do unexpected things. I used to work with a blasting crew and have seen it again and again. You know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men... well, mix said plans with something that detonates and the misadventure really begins.

I can't imagine a ballistics vest or a helmet saving someone hit by this, am I right in thinking this would pass a significant shockwave through someone wearing such armors?

@@Blei1986 *even more nervous vs. Brits crew sweating*
And we have a winner. Good stability good accuracy and great smack down.

I imagine that the primer on the blank would fail to ignite if it hit anything less solid than metal or rock.
At those speeds, contact with almost anything beyond air would probably generate enough kinetic energy to pop the primer. I could be wrong, though.
For future reference: get yellow tipped blanks. They have more powder. Completely avoid grey and brown, they are the weakest.
Or if you can find them, get red or purple tips. Purple are the most powerful.

purple with a bit of tannerite !
The blank is just acting as the primer for the actual explosive anyway
My friend thought it would be a good idea to put a live 22 round in the tip of one of these slugs. Let's just say his family doesn't have to spend money on him anymore.
There might be one thing to do to make it slightly more stable in flight, though it might lead to slightly lower speeds. When you look at 0:50, you can have a 4 degrees angle on each of the feet touching the scale/floor, and make it so it's perpendicular to the rifling, so the explosion also helps rotate the bullet in the chamber, which would likely work well with the rifling.
Ok... so where do we find them?

You guys don’t help my marriage, but you make it hurt less.
RIP Danny. This is still my favorite video.
Dead eye Dan strikes again.
Those are really cool slugs
You do not want to be hit with that!!! Great video!

This does more damage the thicker your armor plating is. It'd turn your armor into lethal fragments. You'd need to wear that there lead plate to stop it, and even then it'd hurt lol
Is that a tannerite compound? It has that familiar color.
The Triggerati would they be able to do that tho? At least in my state it's legal to buy but not to use so if that's the same everywhere how could they sell it without a warning.

Shape charges are your friends. Badass content guys I applaud your efforts.
thanks!
It's not a shaped charge..
But a shaped charge shotgun slug would sure be worth a watch!
Correct.
I was gonna comment that, but I didn't want to be a repeat
I'm following just because you sound fukn awesome.... subscribed
Looks like its acting more like HE.
Does it induce spalling like a regular hesh round where it throws off a chunk from the inside of said armored tanker vehicle that's what I'd like to know looks pretty sweet

wow that is one mean slug. That last shot really shows how nasty these are with all the spalling, fragmentation and flashfire.
The impact would destroy you from the inside out.

That is the coolest slow mo shot you guys have ever gotten. Going out to shoot with you guys would be a blast lol literally
It can only be hesh if it sticks hesh stands for high explosive squash head for those that don't know. It's purpose is to stick to tanks and expload on the outside sending a shock wave to send shrapnel from the inside to the crew. This is more like a HEAT shell high explosive anti tank
may i ask from where you know that ? im curious
More like APHE, it penetrates and explodes inside.
HESH rounds contact the armour and squash against it (its in the name). the fuse is in the base of the shell, and only detonates after its driven forward and contacts the armour/structure, which is a fraction of a second after t he main shell hits

Would have been nice to see what happens if this was shot at multiple sheets of drywall setup in apartment style setting.
This might be a really good home defense round because if:
1. you hit target they are down.
2. you miss target it hits drywall it explodes on first sheet and bits lands and stays in second sheet, which means no over-penetration, which is what you want in home defense round.
Yeah, we set the plate at a pretty good angle so it would deflect up and to the right.
Its always a risk. Energetic materials often do unexpected things. I used to work with a blasting crew and have seen it again and again. You know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men... well, mix said plans with something that detonates and the misadventure really begins.
