Can you make a guide video for how to make a mullet swapping the rear wheel to 27.5 tools needed and component to look into please
Well, technically that's "bike stuff" not "suspension stuff" but...really all you need to do is swap out the rear wheel. But that's a very simple answer and it doesn't address all the variables that might come up...
If you do this a lot you really should consider to catch the oil in a pan and deliver it to the proper place for disposing oil. I hope it's not too weird or obnoxious :) Love your videos.
Most of the oil goes into a sink with a bucket for recycling...not obnoxious at all. But so much of my used paper towels are soaked in oil and those go in the garbage...so every once in a while this is the method.
@@ButterSuspension Ok makes sense. If you have opinions and what forks/dampers/springs work better or worse and their serviceability, it could be very interesting to hear and make for some great videos. We mostly hear about suspension from tests written by journalists in the trade who rely on the goodwill of manufacturers, but I'd really be interested to hear your opinion if you have some insights.

I think what would be awesome is to have sliding dropouts/caliper alignment for the lowers. Imagine just having more adjustability for the rider's preference. Though the r&d to do that might get super expensive.

I have a question about the crush washers: if I don't need a full "1 year service kit" (for the same exact reason: travel change on a new fork), but the necessary crush washers (one 8mm, and one with flange on the side where the rebound knob is) comes only in kit, what type of washers did you used in this video?
I have hundreds of crush washers from kits that sometimes include more than what's needed for a given service. You can also buy them in bulk, pretty sure Rockshox sells them separately.
On the difference between the stanchions. What about the brake mounting posts? I suppose they also have to be repositioned together with the dropouts.
Correct, they move up with the dropouts as well.
Do you have to remove the air before doing a lower swap? I don't recall seeing you take the air out so assume you don't. Thanks for the great tutorials, always appreciate seeing pros work.
Nope, the air on Rockshox forks (and Fox, Manitou, many others) is all inside the upper leg. No need to mess with the air spring during a lower swap/service.
Can you do a video on rebuilding a Grip 2 damper?

Haven't done this to the latest model but I'm 99% sure it's the same.
@@ButterSuspension … since the housing cost me around 400€ I will go for the 29“ Fork and a price of 740€. I guess that’s my best option and I will keep my ZEB on my 27,5“ Bike.
I will do a test as soon I get the 29 Fork and let you know if also works on the 2023 Model.
Do you just use standard 8mm crush washers for both sides? The stock one on the damper side is wider but I can't find them anywhere
No, I'll use a new one for the air side and in a pinch I'll re-use the wider one for the damper side.

Architecture is the same on all Zeb's so it should work fine.
Hi great video im doing this today Quick question do I need to depressurize fork before removing the lower leg. Might be a dumb question if so sorry buddy.
There are no dumb questions! You do not need to depressurize the fork before removing the lower leg; the air pressure is contained in the upper left leg.
hi, from 27.5 to 29, do you have to change the travel as well? (to keep the same geo) if yes 10mm is enough or more? Thanks
Not sure what the exact numbers are when you swap lowers and wheel size, but I'm pretty sure it's more than 10mm. Keep in mind you're changing both the radius of the wheel and the axle to crown height to accommodate that new radius.
Wish I had two setups with the same travel to compare...
First off great instructional video love it. Anyway are all year Zeb lowers the same. I have 2001 Ultimate forks and can only find 2023 lowers.with bleeds in the UK will they be ok to fit.

i always assumed the crush washer was a last defense for oil leaking out.
Maybe, but really, if you don't have the shafts fully seated, oil will find a way out.

You bet. Fork doesn't know what's going on! It won't be exactly the same as running a 27.5 wheel on a set of 27.5 lowers since the axle to crown is different between the two, but it would work.

@@ButterSuspension appreciate the reply. I got the 29” fork on a deal but realized later that the 29” wheels might be a touch big for the height of the person who will be riding it. Hopefully the geometry won’t change much especially on an e-bike with the motor sitting so low.

Depends on the year, but yes, you should be able to.
wow You open the Pandora's box for me .... but next question, can I use the lowers from a Domain in my Zeb?
Just like the Yari and Lyrik are the same fork with a different damper and the Pike and Revelation are the same fork with a different damper, the Zeb and the Domain are basically the same fork just with a different damper and I think the air spring is different. The lowers should swap, but not sure why you would other than wheel size change.
@@ButterSuspension I had the same question! The reason right now might be because if you wanted to swap a Zeb to 29 (as I do), a Zeb lower fork is $375 and an entire Domain 29" fork is $275. So - it's a no brainer if the lowers are identical! And then you end up with a 27.5" Domain as a bonus fork.
Does this apply with the Lyrik (49t76759392 ) I would like to convert the lowers to 29"? I already upgraded the spring to the C1 @170mm (still has the RCT3 damper it came with)
and keep the geo the same as it's already 170/150 and I don't want to slack it out any more than necessary.
That should be "swappable", I'd call Rockshox to be sure. But you will change the geometry by going to 29" up front as the wheel is bigger and the axle to crown is taller to make room for the bigger wheel.

If we have shaft for 160 mm for 27,5 and then put lowers for 29 hwat hapend to the fork travel ?
I think that becouse the lower legs 29 are longer than 27,5 and shaft is the same leinght then the fork travel is a litle smaler or i am mestaking.

By the whey video is great.
Travel is at the air shaft, wheel size is at the lowers. If you look up the different air shaft part numbers, they don't differentiate between wheel sizes (unlike first gen Pikes...)
The other way to think of it is the axle just needs to move down to fit a 29" wheel, but the wiper seals stay in the same place so the travel doesn't change.

Depends on the model/year but most "modern" forks just need a lowers swap. Fox has a few more parts compatibility options so your best bet is to call Fox directly with your serial number for the correct parts.

Hey Joe- i've been able to get a few sets from Rockshox but they seem to be pretty scarce. If you're in the United States and you want to send me your fork I can see if they have more in stock.
@@ButterSuspensionI live in Hong Kong, except for the coils of the double crown front fork, the Hong Kong dealer hardly sells most of the fork spare parts and repairs, you can only take them to the general dealer shop for repair
Is the zeb retrofitable with butter cups?
Yes. You can swap out the air shaft and the damper for the Buttercup models, but Rockshox has told me the most benefit is from swapping just the air shaft.
Would 29” wheel fit on 27.5 Zeb lowers?
It looks like there is sizable amount of clearance with 27.5 on there.
Haven't tried to fit one, but the bigger issue is even if it DOES fit in the lowers, it usually will hit the bottom of the crown of the uppers at full compression. It may only hit for that one millisecond, but it's still a bad day when it does.
For funsies I just tried. Tire does not clear the lower with a 29x2.3 butcher grid trail T9. It's close enough to install, but no clearance to roll. Now we know definitely!
Really thought you might resize the bushings. The Zebs are notorious for having tight bushing and preventing slick movement of the stanchions. The lyriks and Yaris seem to be less problematic in this aspect (Zebs rushed to market to compete with the 38s???)
Haven't purchased that tool set just yet, they're about $900. Internet rumors aside, I haven't seen any Rockshox product with tight bushings yet...

Yes, all Zebs share the same "chassis" dimensions.
I have a 2016 Boxxer 27.5, thinking about upgrading to a 29", however its sooo expensive and doing a lower swap looks more doable. Can this be done with the boxxer. I've notice you can still get C1 29" lowers but not sure if they would be compatible with my 2016 boxxer. someone mention in forums that you can put a lryik lower on a boxxer

I want to do this exact conversion with my fox 38 forks. I want to run my 27.5 fac 180mm 37mm rake as a 29er. I have a fork here that is 29perf 170mm 44mm rake. End result I want a 29fac 170mm 44mm rake. Will this not be achievable with a Fox fork?
Do you know what else on a Fox fork contributes to take besides the lowers?

The 27.5 is a 2021 while the 29 is 2022.
The lowers only determine wheel size. Offset is all in the crown, same as Rockshox. That's why they list the offset in the different part numbers for CSU's but not in the lowers.
You can swap lowers on Fox forks to change wheel size but it's all year dependent, you would need to contact Fox with your serial numbers to see if that swap will work.

Is this the same for all rockshox forks? With regard to 27.5 to 29 versions? At least the high end versions maybe, like Lyrik, Pike, Yari, Domaine, Sid?

What is your go to method for identifying Monarch seal kits? I find I spend a good 20 mins sometimes identifying what kit I need for a 200hr service, and then there have even been instances where I got the wrong kit and 2-3 seals are the wrong size and I have to call the supplier and get the extra bits expedited. I know the trick about the first number after the letter is the model year but there have been instances where that number does not line up with the service manual and I'm looking at the inners and it's definitely different from what the manual says it should be for that year and I have to go search another manual +/- 1yr to get the right IFP depth and torque specs.

Not for all of them; older Pikes and Lyriks have different air springs for different travel/wheel size configurations. Newer Lyrik, Pike, Zeb and Boxxer all do this.
The syringe is just from a bleed kit BUT! It's a fresh syringe that hasn't had brake fluid pushed through it. I just rigged up a stiff hose on the end.
I'll add a tools list video to the queue. Planning on doing a Fox Transfer rebuild video but really only to show how many tools it takes and how much they cost.
Most of what I see through the shop are the newest generation of Monarch and Monarch Plus; these are "roughly" 2014+. They have black everything. I keep those kits in stock. 11.4118.038.002 for Monarch Plus

Then there's the Monarchs that came before that, they have red lettering on the decals. Pretty much don't ever see those, and generally won't rebuild those since they're not supported by SRAM anymore.

How cool is that? Just swap lowers and BOOM, you've got your preferred wheel size without buying an entire fork. Are those lowers absurdly expensive? I couldn't imagine they are too cheap.
They retail for $355 plus labor to install.

Offset is in the crown. It's super expensive to cast magnesium lower legs so they only make two molds, one for 27.5 and one for 29. More cost effective to make offset options in the crown.
I'm wondering how you stopped the 29er tyre from hitting the crown. I assume you drop 20mm of travel. Ie a 180mm 275 fork would be 160mm as a 29er????
The arch on the lowers is in the same spot on both sizes; the axles are in different spots in space. The uppers, air shafts and dampers are the same regardless of wheel size on these newer forks, hence why the only difference is the lowers.
What do you charge to do this if I mail my fork in?
Labor is $60, lowers are around $355. Plus tax and shipping if you're not in the Seattle area.
