When I rode dirt bikes in 80s... fox was pop cause the name, Fox shox.. it was catchy... but the real suspensions were kyb, local guys named Kessler, and some others, but fox dominated advertising so they won, they were the dominos pizza of suspension.
Would be good to see dyno plots and telemetry of the two. My intuition is that Fox actually have the right idea here regarding larger air volume and lower pressure.
I actually feel the ohlin is better for tuneability, essentially you have smaller increments, where as the fox you cant adjust much once you're at your weight limit...for example on my 40's i have like 5psi to play with before its too hard or too soft. I would imagine the ohlin would be like 10-12psi so you get a much finer tune
I'm absolutely blown away just how much technology has been passed down from Moto-GP and Motor cross! I literally run Ohlins front forks $5,500.00 on my BMW M1000RR and its almost identical internals but smaller! I had know clue that this caliber of bike even existed and its just awesome to see these parts from a known company that I'm familiar with! Looking up what kind of builds y'all put these trick parts on!
Yer its all the same stuff just miniature! Some of tech runs both ways though. Im sure theres tons they are learning from having MTB product. We do off the shelf Ohlins builds on our site and they are rad! Not to say its the 100% best for everyone but we really do think its the best stuff!
@@BRINKUKthey dominate the motorcycle category so I can only think they have moved into Mtb to learn more, my wallet is here shaking and saying don’t do it!
Let me know when you can tweak the feel of a Grip2 like you can the Ohlins with it's triple chamber design. I can easily add or remove a bit of pressure at the bottom of the fork in seconds, and I can even go stepwise up and down in tiny increments. Impossible to do on a stock Fox fork
Fork for best repetitious small bump sensitivity. Like the old unmatched Citoen DS which i drove for several years. What fork delivers like that? I'm no bikeparker, i have long travel suspension mostly for comfort (180mm). But in my opinion: the problem is that bicycles do not have enough mass, which let's any stickslip effects in the suspension/dampingsystem get prominent. With the same suspension/dampingsystem and more vehiclemass and of corse more pressure the stick effects would not grow or not grow in the same way but the forces which are acting on the system so in summa the impact of the friction would get less, like: a small bump acts with more fore on a heavier vehicle like the same bump would on a featherweight one.
I’d recommend looking into a coil conversion for your current fork. Push and Vorsprung both make a lot of aftermarket kits. Running a coil tends to have better small bump sensitivity but less progression when compared to an air sprung fork. Marzocchi makes a Z1 Coil that’s pretty good as well. I have my Fox Performance 38 set up at 22% sag and slightly slower rebound than recommended and fully open compression, it handles chatter and big hits very well at that setup without much compromise on either end.
Its really interesting to me the olins floating piston, bc my rockshoks 2012 reba rl has a dual air system that allows it to do the same and i dont know why it is not in every fork
Great video. Fair to say that adding tokens in the Air side, will reduce the available travel of the fork by limiting the Air volume...!? so I guess that Öhlins does manage the ''end pressure'' without limiting the travel (air volume) of the fork with their different design or not !?
great breakdown and interesting to see the differences. I wanted to get a Zeb, then the more I looked Fox 38.......then Ohlins, this hasn't helped 😅 💵💰 From the home mechanics and tech lovers though, thanks 👍
It's funny. People were skeptical about the ohlins in the past years. And now they are finally caught on and I'm not unique in the hill any more. Honestly ohlins on my r1, I put em on my hard enduro 2 stroke, and I even force my friends with Harleys to adopt them. They make all the difference on any two wheels
Absolutely lovely video! But I'm a tinkerer, and I really would like to know what kind of frankensteins I can get away with. For example,e geting an 38 suntour chassis, but using ohlins damping cartrige? Maybe a rockshox one? What parts are interchangeable? I know the industry keeps it's secrets about a lot of things, but this is what an independent reviewer can do!
@@Polemicist_ I prefer Ohlins overall despite the price. I do believe though that aggressive trail or park riding is where Ohlins shines most. Before I tried Ohlins I’ve had/ridden Rockshox Lyrik, Zeb (an excellent fork!) and Boxxer as well as Fox 34, 36 and 38. The main difference between the others to me was that although Fox and Rockshox are softer off the top, Ohlins has a more noticeable and more confidence inspiring mid-stroke support ie the suspension feels like it’s always there (especially on jumps and drops), was easier to find an adjustment that works as Ohlins uses a design approach called “usable range” which results in it being almost difficult to find a setting that doesn’t work on an Ohlins and finally, has a progressivity ramp adjustment chamber instead of using annoying tokens.
Thank you so much for the insight. I am kind of new to Mountain biking. But I have a lower quality brand of fox on right now. ( rhythm ) . I have been reading a lot about the Ohlins forks and Shocks. Your comments are definitely making me go towards Ohlins. Also, I think it would look really awesome on my turbo levo, which is all black with yellow grips, yellow pedals, and yellow stem from Pembree.
@@shawnstradwick5637 yeah that would look sharpe! Although the Fox Rhythm is a great value fork (supposedly having the same internals as the Marzocchi Bomber) and won’t hold you back at all, if you have the margin in your budget, the Ohlins is simply next-level. Also Ohlins forks are on sale all over the place right now eg JensonUSA, etc. The Ohlins RXF36 would likely be the upgrade from your Rhythm.
SUPER cool to see the insides of both! Have you experimented with removing the negative air chamber spacer that apparently is in Ohlins 38 forks? Seemed like Alex at Bike Radar had experimented with that with positive results... not saying necessarily that the RXF38 needs to be better :) Excited to hear about blind testing!
Yer we’ve tried both ways. If you want it more supple off the top it’s good but accelerates the fork into the mid stroke so pros and cons. Personally I prefer the fork to ride a little higher so I leave mine in on the 38.
I was gonna ask the same question, and had just come across that same review. I’m a lighter rider at 160lbs with gear and have an RXF38 on the way. I’ll experiment with it stock and see how it is and if it’s too harsh off the top or not with it. @BRINKUK Is it easy to remove the negative chamber spacer if needed?
Why do they do damper rod vs cartridge forks? Genuinely curious since cartridge forks offer superior rebound and compression dampening as well as a lower center of gravity. Seems like a no brainer.
I'm debating between fox 36 performance elite @ $850 and the Ohlins RXF 36 @ $800. My frame came with fox float x performance rear shock so the fox 36 would match it, but I think I'd rather have the ohlins fork on sale. Then I'd probably want to sell fox rear shock and buy matching ohlins.. hmmm decision decisions
We did it a fair amount on the 36 fork but I find the 38 rides a little nicer with the spacer in. Probably due to the bigger lower leg volume. Awesome forks!!
@@BRINKUK yea I was just asking as I got a shot of some ohlins 38s and struggled to find the balance between small bump and support. I could feel the damper was absolutely mint I just couldn’t figure the air pressures out to get what I was after.
They aren’t the fork for small bump sensitivity off the top but at sag they should be more than supple with the right setup. Sometimes it’s worth sizing the bushes. We can do that for you! 👍🏻
So how woud it be a blind test when you have just stated the Ohlins gives you more support, more balance, more control etc when you have already ridden both and decided the Ohlins is the better fork.

Ohlins forks are also coated… just a different colour/process. Ohlins innovates… fox copies
I love these new Ohlins forks, it’s made the second hand price of Fox 38s really good.
I love how you guys dove into the "tech" in the fork! You guys should do the Zeb next maybe?

well, the positive air chamber tokens work a bit different, but for a novice rider that would be a good enough explanation.
