So many harsh critics below. This company did very well by Mr.B’s choreography, considering that they hadn’t the benefit of class with Balanchine that week, or year. A little slow, but with more than a little excellent technique. When I watch works by George, I tend not to judge the dancers because I view the performance as a marvel of his choreography. I only see him as he made the dances; I like to see what he did with familiar music. Always dazzling. Always lovable. His miracle of creativity lives on. So I’m grateful to any and all dancers who take on Balanchine.
Самое лучшее видео, которые я видела с этим спектаклем. Абсолютно живые, эмоциональные артисты балета. Эмоционально и технически сильный спектакль, хотя прошло 53 года. Великолепная постановка, великолепное исполнение!
Love that Balanchine choreography! Very tough to pull it off. Patty McBride had the original quirkiness and incredible finesse with the quick foot movements! These dancers did a great job with some tough steps. Music is so dreamy!!
In my opinion, this is definitely sub-par. The dancers clearly just aren't used to integrating a level of "casualness" to their dancing, something that Balanchine's choreography demands. Although they still make a valiant effort to show some character, it seems like it's just an afterthought on their way to hit the next position - this is especially visible in the men's part. The most "true to balanchine" part of this entire recording is when the guy does 4 pirouettes and then walks out of it. That looks like it would belong on NYCB's stage.
I agree. I felt the tempo was a bit sluggish at times and the dancing did not have the boldness, quickness, cheekyness you would expect to see. Very underwhelmed.
Thank you for offering the NYC Ballet in Gershwin Who Cares? Balanchine created a ballet company uniquely American without losing techniques which were recognized movements in European companies. Congratulation to him for what he brought to the ballet world.
This performance was recorded live in the Muziektheater Amsterdam on 22 November 2005, performed by the Dutch National Ballet and Holland Symfonia, conducted by Roy Goodman.
Thanks for this! Great choreography, music score, orchestration. I really liked that the cast included so many races, different body types. I agree that it could be a little looser and bigger; but I thought they did a good job!
"Who Cares" is a wonderful ballet, which not only retains the beauty of classical ballet, but injects fresh vitality by borrowing other artistic materials.
I love this ballet and have enjoyed this performance several times already. Thank you for uploading it! Baryshnikov did a very nice televised performance of the abridged concert version in the 1980s with, if I remember correctly, Julie Kent, Leslie Browne and Deirdre Carberry of ABT. Would like to see that on TH-cam one of these days.
Their American accents are perfect--they could go straight to Broadway, which I mean as the highest compliment. And the orchestra sounds fabulous. Now if only someone would make a ballet of Jerome Kern songs . . . Justin Peck, are you listening?
This is such a wonderful ballet, and the dancers here are terrific, but some of the Balanchine jazziness is missing, as are some of the steps. It's still great to watch, though, and the performers are beautiful.
I love it, its like watching a fred and ginger movie only in balletic style. As i love both im well happy with it. A different take on ballet altogether much more light hearted expext gene Kelly's to appear any moment
In my earlier comment I mentioned an abridged version of Who Cares from the 1980s featuring Baryshnikov and three ABT ballerinas: Christine Dunham (not Julie Kent, as I mistakenly thought), Leslie Browne, and Deirdre Carberry. Well, "brener dance" has uploaded it as part of a Baryshnikov Dances Balanchine program that opens with Apollo. The picture quality is not good but the performances are even better than I remembered, and the tempos are nice and brisk.
I was looking forward to seeing what they would do with one of my favorite ballets--especially the Gershwin score. The performance, I thought, was a bit disappointing. A lot of port de bras and epaulement were not fully completed. Some of the corps had little spirit and just looked out at the audience. The men, I think, looked most comfortable in the Balanchine loose-limbed American style and were more musical. The lady soloists were good. However, the Asian soloist in red did not have a clue; she probably had the best classical technique, but she didn't understand at all the use of the hips and the signature off-balance syncopation. She just seemed determined to perform the steps perfectly--and she did, like a classical ballerina. It would have been nice that two of the other men were involved in the soloist pas de deux. Not sure if Mr. B. cast only one male soloist in 3 pas de deux. The company has excellent feet and legs, but, with the exception of some ladies in the corps, I was not convinced that everyone was giving their all and really communicating those wonderful Gershwin tunes. A few people showed some joyful, flirtatious chemistry with their partners. Maybe the company just needs more rehearsal (coaching) and a more "who cares" attitude.
Até hoje, não vi melhor performance desse ballet do q a do American Ballet em 1983 (se não me engano), com Baryshnikov, Christine Dunham, Leslie Browne, e Deirdre Carberry. Maravilhosos em técnica e interpretação!
The dancing needs to be a little more “American” - freer, looser, slightly messy, space-devouring and very energetic. It’s all very beautiful but a little too careful, prim even.
it's a ballet by George Ballanchine. He blended the best American popular music and Russian ballet. That's the merit. If you wish to come up with a ballet of your own, go ahead and do it. Cheers!
@@vHumboldt77 Gee, thanks so much for pointing out it’s a ballet. I decline your invitation to come up with a ballet of my own since nothing to this music created by me or anybody else, can surpass what George Balanchine created here.
The dancers are actually lovely, but they simply don't have the looseness, the gaiety, or the jazz idiom necessary. So many moments that should be, as another comment says, slap-ball-change, NOT pas de bourree--or a chorus girl BUMP, not a polite ballet move. The double pirouette at the end of Embraceable You is exemplary, and the jumping girl does many good things, but...
I performed this at the Opera Zurich in 1980 being part of the orchestra in the pit. What a joy! A score and choreography for the ages. I´ll never forget it! Wonder what kind of arrangements of this score I´ll find for my Black Forest Wind Band that plays on the highest level. Any advice?
Genrietta A Not the right place to look. Check NYCB 1993 version....this is missing the freedom, jazziness the " who cares" spirit. Check the best of the best in this ballet: Elizabeth Loscavio in " My One and Only" ( she does ALL the steps choreographed by Balanchine without changing anything). She is unmatched in this. Sassy, classy, playful and fiercely technical. th-cam.com/video/o3LRfN83Ng8/w-d-xo.html Judith Fugate in Fascinating Rhytm. Same thing. At ease with the choreography as intended, fast, smooth. th-cam.com/video/dAIZDPRH5Es/w-d-xo.html
Yes it's kind of like when opera singers try to sing pop songs or jazz standards. Somehow it is technically correct and lovely, but somehow still misses the mark because it is too exacting.

I have danced that part with the 5 guys and trust me it is the most pleasant thing you can do 😊🎉❤
I'm not much of a judge of ballet--though I enjoyed this--but I can tell you that the orchestra is superb under Roy Goodman.
Сочетание классических движений с джазом очень впечатляет. Энергия музыки Гершвина точно передает Америку. Здорово, что мы такие разные!
