Reconditioning the Band Saw Table. Leveling casting, Boring the insert countersink, making an insert

  • The Delta band saw table suffers a severe bowing that keeps any wok from moving smoothly across the top. Leveling the top is easy enough with a facing mill, but a few problems crop up with the clamping method. The insert bore is chewed all to heck as well. Finding center and re-boring. This is fun. Then we make up a new insert out of Stainless steel. All good fun in the morning. The Delta band saw is now coming together. Restoration or Improvement over original?

Nice fix up Don, doesn't the blade relief go parallel to the miter gauge slot?
And yes the yellow needs to go.
    Thanks for sharing
    Cheers

Rick, you are absolutely right. For some reason I was mind referencing my Craftsman saw when I was doing this. It was a 1 minute fix with a 1/8 db to turn it 90 degrees. Good eye BTW.. Don

The same boring head I have. It’s a very nice one. I think I bought mine around the year 2000. Just keep in mind that inserts are usually made either from soft steel or aluminum so that if (when) the blade hits them the insert is mucked up from the blade, rather than the blade being mucked up from the insert. Stainless is a tough thing for a blade to hit, particularly a wood cutting, or non HSS metal cutting blade.
I’m confused at the way the slot is pointed. The slot should be parallel to the blade, as someone else has also pointed out. How are you going to get a 1/2” blade into that insert?

Hey Mel, Yes, I like the Criterion a lot. Its my own personal one, so i don't break it out much. I know the inserts should be of softer material for that reason. I was tempted to talk about that point. I made the gap a little wider than normal to allow for potential blade flex or tilt error. Not to say that its a sure thing, but I'm the user, only use metal cutting blades, and know what to watch for, so figure the added weight and mass are to my advantage. My other saw, the green one, I put an aluminum plate into and have just not been happy with it. So we'll see how this goes. Thanks for hangin in there. Don

Very good job, Don. That Depth-Mic with the counter is surely a very nice one. I´m looking for one like that for a long time.

Hi MM, Thanx. Ya, I like that mic as well. Mitotuyo makes some nice stuff. Its an oldy but a goodie. Got to keep your eyes peeled for them theses day. Don

Could’ve used a couple of small screw jacks on each cut side 🤷🏼‍♂️ good video anyways

Ya, I was thinking that while running my initial cuts. But sometimes Lazy begets smart.... :-) Thanks for tuning in. Don

Shims in the split, and clamp it horizontally so the clamp is on the underside in the front, and you can clean that right up

Thanks. I'm going to keep that in mind for the next one. The tooling marks pretty much disappeared after a little sanding, and once it greyed up from air/moisture, you can't even see them now. Very superficial. Like my weight, the camera tends overemphasize the ugly... Thanks. Don

Thanks KT.. I'm gonna try, but the heat is really getting to be above what I can handle for too long. May see some dead space time coming soon. Don
