Modifying Fork bushings for obsolete upside down Suzuki forks. GSXR1000 fork repair.
Using Race Tech part number# FMBO 431225P 43x12x2.5 mm bushings.
Late 1990's and early 2000's model years Suzuki GSXR 1000 motorcycles using the KYB 43mm fork tubes went obsolete pretty quickly. Finding the correct set of bushings now is impossible. A good solution is modify what is available saving lots of cash in the process. Here we shave the 12mm wide by 2.5mm thick race tech 43mm bushing set down to the Suzuki 7.8mm width. This is a very easy modification that will get you back on the road quickly with outstanding results. A very easy do it yourself job you can master on the Craftsman Atlas, Southbend or other small lathe.

I have a huge old Lodge and Shipley lathe from probably 1915, and want to raise it up about 9 inches, but it weighs about 2000lb's. Not sure why it sits so damn low, but it's a huge waste of space under it, and I need my 3 rolling workbenches to fit under it against the wall, and I don't use the lathe that often because I have a small Logan 200 from 1942 as well, that works for most things I work on. I'm not having much luck finding anyone else that has lifted a lathe that much, especially a huge old lathe from the early 1900's... I don't want to use wood, because I would imagine that it would degrade over time, so I don't trust it. Maybe cement blocks or stacked cement patio stones?? Maybe 4x4 metal tubing somehow welded together?? Maybe cement inside the 4x4 metal tubing that's welded?? There are big castor wheels that can apparently handle the weight, and maybe with some metal brackets across them might be an idea?? I know it's weird, but I'm intent on doing it somehow, otherwise I can't keep it here taking up the amount of room that it does, as it's 9 feet long and sticks out from the wall about 45", so I figured why not make it into a workbench that the top can come down on hinges over top of this giant beast, and when I want to use it, I can lift the hinged workbench top back away from it... Any suggestions other than getting rid of it, and or that I should check myself into a mental institution, would be greatly appreciated?? Pros or Cons even??

  • @peteheyde7999

I had a lot of wobble in my upper wheel. To fix this, I wrapped heavy duty aluminum foil and contact cement around the tensioner slide bars. Between every 2 layers of foil, I brushed a little DAP contact cement, taking care not to have any cement get on the outside surface of the foil and then pushed the bar into the axle adjusting slide groove. I repeated this process until I had almost no wobble on either side individually, and NO wobble when both slider bars were wrapped and form fitted to 2.5mm I found that 2.5 mm is the sweet thickness on the sliders. The aluminum foil is only a MacGyver temporary quick fix. I did it to get through a project, and it's holding up surprisingly well. After I finish this current project, I'm going to have my cousin mill me up a couple of new sliders to 2.5mm uniform thickness. The biggest problems I find is that with these cheap saws, is the loose the tolerances make precision cutting iffy at best. TH-cam has a lot of great instructional videos on how to "tighten up" the slop and and make it a very serviceable and respectable machine. BTW, you're absolutely correct about not skimping on the blades. The OEM blade is junk. I put a Harbor Freight "top of the line" all purpose blade, and It made a big difference. I also bought a Starrett 99192-05-04-1/2 Intenss Bimetal Band Saw Blade, Powerband M42, 1/2-inch Width, 0.025-inch Thickness, 5 ft.-4-1/2-inch Welded Band Length, Pitch (TPI): 14. I haven't put it on the saw yet, and probably won't until I get my slide bars machined, but Starrett has been a major quality manufacturer for a very long time and I expect their highly rated blade to be among the best. Whatever other tolerances I can tighten up, I'll let you know.
