As someone who has recently become hopelessly addicted to shmups after finally understanding how to appreciate the genre, your channel has been a godsend. Always appreciate the insightful and well-made content. Are you excited for the switch release of Batsugun in late May? I’m going to be grabbing the physical version here in Japan.
I stumbled onto this on Steam a few months ago and it was one of my favorite buys all year. It truly is a delight in every way. Is it a bit simple and easy? Yeah, but when a spectacle shooter is THIS *spectacular* I only need to the gameplay to be competent. Which it totally is. I'll pull it out and replay it from time to time, just for a fun 90 minutes of glorious retro pewpew. (Funny, I was actually going to bring it up the next time you dropped a review, since I figured you'd like it. 😀)
Great review! I agree with you on all your positive points - especially the earnest presentation and wanting to show other people, but still it wasn’t enough to keep me from wishing I wasn’t playing something better that looked and sounded this good. I’m very glad I played it, took around 4 hours, but I couldn’t free up those 12GB fast enough. Glad you had a lot of fun with this one. Looking forward to Shikigami 2 review!
I downloaded this one back in December via Steam, and was blown away by how good it looks. There are definitely some frustrating bits, but once you get used to the hitbox and the overall flow, it's a pretty slick and fun experience. I'm also hoping for a physical console release, and I definitely echo your sentiments about how much love went into this game. It shows quite a bit.
A straight-up masterpiece. It's funny to me that most shm ups on Switch are just arcade ports. Every time I googled "nswitch shmups", I would roll my eyes as most lists of recomendations are just arcade games that were ported. I try to stay away from ports and rereleased. I like "original" games on current consoles. This game is fantastic!!
Not sure if I'll enjoy this one much in gameplay feel. Movements look iffy IMO. However for sure I might check this one out mainly for visual spectacle as I'm a big fan of that old-timey scifi aesthetic. That big bird with its stop motion-like movements put a big smile on my face.
Been waiting for this review. 9/10 ?I I will be getting this then. Now if only someone would make a Rocket Man version, which was an awesome bw scfi on BBC 2 back in the day.Excellent review..
Wow!! Wasn’t expecting such a high rating and I mean that in a good way! Actually looks really fun but I can’t get over the tilting shooting mechanic. Did you find it easy to adapt?
Not easy, no. Honestly, there's a lot about this that wouldn't usually appeal to me. But I just found it such a joy to play around with - even if the level design etc didn't particularly suit me - that I was never not having fun with it. Replaying it to capture footage for the review was just the same. It was like: Yes, this and this and this are frustrating, but...I don't really mind because, look, there's a kaiju throwing trains!
I almost rejected this one outright as style over substance. Sounds like the style itself is substantive. I'll probably give it a go at some point, will just need to archive 4 or 5 games first!
The 9/10 rating is too high. The setting and presentation are nice, but the b/w graphics got a bit boring after a while and the gameplay is very basic. It was still fun to play through once, with its B-movie cutscenes, but there's no incentive to play it again. I bought the game on Switch Day 1 and completed it at one go in a couple of hours.Although I died a lot (because of incompetence ;-) ) the game was easy because when you replay a level a couple of times you always earn more money which can be used for upgrades and makes a once tough level easy (easier) to complete. I paid like $0.50 when it was relased at Argentinian eShop in March. Price went up to around $3.50 which is also very cheap. But I wouldn't pay $20 at the US eShop.
It's nice to see a game unironically homage something

Very much so! Got the physical edition pre-ordered!
@@ShmupsOnSwitch Are you in Japan?
This is a game I would love to have in my collection. Hopefully, there will be a physical release.

This review captures the game perfectly, I'd say. Did you mention that it has 2P co-op? That's the perfect way to enjoy this one.

My dad grew up on this kind of sci-fi and he would have loved this. The sincerity in the game is much appreciated.
Holy smokes, I love the looks and feel of this game. Hopefully a physical edition will be released at some point. Preferably with a poster :)
I f'n love it. Need this physical. Badly.
That's definitely interesting, I like the art and the shadows - mainly the bullets. Thanks for bringing us this one !

The problem is that it takes up a lot of space.
