Success were involved in the Raiden Fighters Aces compilation on 360 and they've been pretty active on Switch recently, so it's not out of the question we'll see all 3 Fighters games one day.
Great review, it is really nice to see Raiden III on a Nintendo console. III is an underrated game, so I was happy to buy this the day it came out. It's not my favorite Raiden game, but this game is really easy to jump back into every now and then for a quick distraction. In terms of the difficulty: I've found III much easier than the others, but maybe it's slightly harder than IV? The "learning curve" for III's stages are much lower than the other games, and you can also avoid the sniper shots by just constantly moving, but the game is also a bit longer and the last three levels have been tricky to nail down. I was admittedly a bit disappointed with the extra content, I was hoping for the toothpaste laser to return (I think it would work nicely with some of the bullet dense levels) or the DLC characters from IV. It was great having the ability to customize the music in the stages, I was a bit surprised IV mikado didn't have this feature (outside of a score attack mode). Though, I wasn't a fan of the arranged music, most of the music just sounded weaker than the original themes, especially the "Side A" themes. I swapped out most of the Side A sound as soon as I unlocked the rest of the music. COSIO's Dawn of Sorrow (stage 3), Yu Shimoda's Electric Resistance (stage 2), and Go Sato Band's Lightning Strikes (stage 1) were my favorite, and I wish the later levels were composed in a style similar to the first three.
I've got it on PS2, so really no point on grabbing the PS4 version? But now I want to flip my 20" Toshiba CRT on it's side and fire up my ps2 for some sweet TATE action. It's been awhile since I played this.
I think the music's the biggest addition, so I'd say if you're happy with the game itself on PS2, it doesn't sound like it would be worth double-dipping for.
Great rewiew. I am about to buy it but I am concerned about saving/viewing your own game or download other player's game. How does it work? You can save a replay of your game in a single split or you have to save after completing each stage?
Raiden 5 doesn't get nearly enough credit. I think the game is amazing, it looks and plays fantastic on PS5. I also have the directors cut physical release that came with the CD soundtrack. The soundtrack of Raiden 5 is truly masterful.
Right, I didn't think it was that bad. I hate that there isn't a tate mode though. And one thing that was mandatory was turning those stupid voices down of the people talking during the stage.

I have a soft spot for it even though it has its shortcoming. I also own the earlier PC version on Steam....and there's a good chance I'll pick this up for Switch if it gets a physical release - but that slowdown is cause for concern re accuracy - I have no memory of it on PS2 or PC... I like the level based score attack mode which lets you try and tackle those later levels at higher difficulties (there's arcade level which is bad enough but there's levels even above that) while keeping scores - you don't get that with other shmups. It's a nice way of training too. There's also a nice feature that lets you start the main mode at later levels if you have cleared them before - but again - only good for training - won't count as a 1CC! :)
Yeah, I definitely prefer IV. III's still decent, and I'd probably recommend it if you really loved IV, so long as your expectations aren't quite as high.

There's only one way to find out! :D I think the main drawback in this one may be the lack of horizontal panning. They couldn't include it on time/budget IIRC.
I've always had a soft spot for Raiden stretching back to Raiden on the Jaguar and Raiden DX on my PSX. For some reason I skipped Raiden 3 (thought I have 4 and 5 for both the PC and Switch), but I think I'll sit this one out given how many other titles out there are on my wish list. Great review though :-)
The slowness of the ship is giving me shortness of breath and restless leg while playing it. This needed some quality of life improvements - ship speed being a HUGE one…
@@gibdo7995 I :think: that's just the speed of the ships in 3 (I haven't had any prior experience with 3). I couldn't see them slowing the ship for this port, so that's my guess

Too bad these Raiden games didn't get any arrange modes, it'd give the titles a bit on longevity. It may be sacrilege but a version where you can move as fast as enemy bullets would make the game more fun for me. Great music though.
All we need is a port of Raiden II, to complete the series on the Switch.
Don’t forget Raiden Jet Fighters. So far I think the only console they’ve been released on is Xbox 360.

Raiden DX is probably my favourite of the franchise, Viper Phase 1 is another one, very much in the vein of the Fighters spinoffs
Eventually we will see 2 on Arcade Archives, not sure about DX and the fighters games.

Loved raiden since i got to play it in arcade at my local mini golf course at a young age. I picked it up about a month ago.
I used to own a copy of Raiden III for PS2 😢. Blows my mind that I missed the announcement for this one! 🔥

@@NodakSavage yep the constant babbling is an absolute joke, and basically ruins the game. Definitely have to turn that down to 0 right off the bat

Would you consider this the best of the Nu-Raidens (3, 4/4O, 5/5DC)? That's the impression I have (that and the series peaking with 2 or DX)

I just don't get the Raiden games. I've played about 4 of them now, and they all seem aggressively average and forgettable.
