  • Science Faculty Curriculum Renewal Symposium: 'Moving Through the Crossroads' at Nelson Mandela University
    19-20 June 2023
Nelson Mandela University Conference Centre (North Campus)
Nelson Mandela University's Faculty of Science is renewing its curricula in its pursuit to become a world-class, engaged, and transdisciplinary African Faculty of Science that addresses societal challenges. A symposium was held on June 19th and 20th to discuss the curriculum renewal process.
The presentations covered various important topics such as critical and humanising pedagogy, AI's impact on education, preserving basic science disciplines, embracing trans- and multi-disciplinary work, and considering the current employment climate and skills shortages. The discussions involved internal and external experts, programme coordinators, academic staff, students, alumni, Science Entities, and Service Faculties.
Key issues identified include emphasizing "soft skills" like communication, self- and project management, problem-solving, analytical thinking, empathy, teamwork, and digital literacy. With this in mind, the Faculty is proceeding with its curriculum renewal process, with a comprehensive report to be made available to all stakeholders. Discussions have been omitted from the recording.
    Acknowledgments:
We would like to thank everyone who contributed to the symposium. Thank you to all the presenters, especially the internal and external experts who have shared their knowledge with us. A special thank you is conveyed to the DVC: Learning and Teaching, LTCollab, and the Faculty of Science for supporting the Curriculum Renewal Project. Most especially, thank you to all those in the Faculty who are involved in the curriculum renewal project for all their contributions and hard work.
