Critical-Speculative Theory Building │ Online Workshop
CRITICAL-SPECULATIVE THEORY BUILDING WORKSHOP
Online Workshop: 19 June 2024
This workshop was organised by the Chair for Critical Studies in Higher Education Transformation (CriSHET) as part of the NRF Global Change Social Sciences Research Programme (GCSSRP)-funded joint project with Mandela University’s Engagement Office. It aimed to offer attendees the opportunity to reflect on the foundations of theorisation in relation to critical and speculative paradigms.
With a focus on knowledge production within the (South) African context, the workshop included overview sessions with a focus on key ideas and approaches to theorisation, such as concept analysis and concept creation, as well as group sessions wherein attendees were encouraged to work through those concepts and ideas in relation to their own current research projects in a supportive intellectual environment.

    Violence. Violence is by its nature a relational dynamic of exercising power on the powerless. Professor Kopano's discourse presupposes that Gender based violence is one sided. This is shallow reading of masculinity. Second, Professor Kopano's research reproduces many stereotypes about Black men. I suppose this makes him popular in South Africa - but there is nothing scientific about what he is doing. Kopano acts as if he is engaged in an in-depth reading of colonialism and apartheid but it is a front. He is not reading the structure of colonialism. His reading of 'structure' is mere talk but not scholarly depth. You cannot discuss violence in South Africa without an in depth reading of its ontological structure. If you do read such a structure critically - you can never speak about violence the way he does. When ever a researcher thinks about a topic as sensitive as gender in ways that maintain a conceptualization of power and powerlessness is bound to fail as a scholarly contribution. It will certainly make one succeed as a celebrity academic.

    • @theidealisticman
      @theidealisticman ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi @FFNON NONE, may you elaborate on two points. One, what do you mean or at least, what do I need to understand in "violence is by its nature a relational dynamic ..." and your disagreement of gender based violence being one sided?

    • @theidealisticman
      @theidealisticman ปีที่แล้ว

      Secondly, you say, "You cannot discuss violence in South Africa without an in depth reading of its ontological structure." what is the ontological structure we need to understand?

    • @FFNONNONE
      @FFNONNONE ปีที่แล้ว

      @@theidealisticman I hope my previous response partly addresses this question as well. To provide a brief explanation: South Africa's social structure is rooted in settler colonialism, shaped by a racist form of primitive accumulation. Within this structure, individuals classified as Black in South Africa are racialized and objectified, serving to stabilize the country's economy on both political and libidinal levels. The libidinal aspect is central to this dynamic. Essentially, South Africa consists of whites, Indians, so-called "coloured" individuals, and "Blacks." It is a society where some groups are possessed, disposed of, and displaced. It is crucial to recognize and grapple with this reality in our theoretical work, as it forms the foundation upon which our analysis is situated. Ultimately, the question at hand is ontological in nature.

    Professor Ratele, you are totally wrong about Professor Manganyi's work. I doubt very much if you actually understood it. For those reading this comment: Professor Chabani Manganyi's work is concerned with The Body and Flesh and How we live in and Through the Body. He has studied the violence of colonialism. Frankly: he is Fanon before Fanon. Manganyi's work is deeply theoretical - it requires that you study his works (not just read it). If you want to understand the role of Critical theory in Psychology - Manganyi is a Critical Theorist. No! Steve Biko and Barney are not "originators" of Black Consciousness! For those interested in Manganyi's work - try to follow Derek Hook. Kopano's problem is that he is too descriptive and shows little depth for THEORY! It is shocking to say Manganyi was "conservative" - it is disturbing! What do you mean: COnservative? Argh!

    Great one ps youtube translation needs work especially at 1:20:57 Business as usual is Eurocentric also so if we were to undo ourselves from it's toxic influences to redefine what it means to be equanimous and sovereign than we may need to reject pseudoscience and the system babylon all together globally. We are more than a dysfunctional system so why not part with it and be honest about what's Empathy and integrity are supposed to look like deinstitutionalized and personally accountable for ourselves and each other. Psychology as a part of Pharmacology is a profit based conglomerate monopoly. Like Religion eurocentric influence has always been realised by means and principle of dominance compliance /obedience/ passive acceptance, Leadership Hierarchies social class all remnants of Narcissism. There is no such thing as Toxic masculinity other than Narcissisms which is not Gender Specific. A change of gender doesn't change your innate character. But to conform or comply to a silently implicit norm by suggestion is what influences humanity at large to deem a new norm into acceptance. By Imagery social media of which all platforms are privately owned. Only an anthropological representation of Narcissism throughout documented history As an Allegory of human history not to be appropriated but authenticated for it's true contributions to civilisation. Eurocentrism is a failed state of capitalism as fatalism. If constitutions were upheld business would not be possible exploitation is against human rights but we just copy and paste. Thus Knowledge is Power. What is the purpose of power Dominance by authority. Psychology is a Pseudo science to establish authority by dominance just like religion did. Sanctification into holier than thou vs Patients One Higher up the social ladder and the other just a subject. Give a psychiatrist a hammer and everything becomes a nail. The focus of specialism that will always find something wrong with you to absolve themselves of equality and compassion through stigmatisation. Another way of saying I'm better than just human I don't have problems. Which doesn't even apply to psychiatrist because even they go in therapy or commit suicide. That's why I believe Humanity is not a profession and we can't stigmatise people into resolve by having them Identifying with trauma like it's their birthright; Nobody wouldn't have it say Abdu Trauma on their passport even though the state they are moving through might be. Empathy nor humanity are a science and that's all that is required to end all trauma. If we want our Own Identity we have to look beyond trauma to define who we are. We are more than our trauma. We are more than a System. We are more than our genders. We are more than Marginal profit or business. We are more than our contributions. We are more than the sum of humanity. We are more than just individual intellects. WE ARE.... ☸ 8.
