    When I make plans, it's always thought out first, see what works for others and get ideas from them. I see you guys have goals, avoid costly mistakes. Those trenches were bad ideas, glad you are doing another pond, great idea. Have you thought about buying chicken and fish feed from a wholesaler instead of buying it locally? I am all for supporting you guys as I am all for supporting small business owners. Let me know the cost of building that new chicken housing and cost of food for both fishes and chickens for 3 months from a wholesaler.

      Hi Bruce! Yes, we've experimented with a few things since we've arrived. Just so we know what works and what doesn't, and where we need to improve ect.. the trenches have to go, we've persevered enough with them so better to get rid and start over. Our pond is doing great, and I think a secondary pond will be perfect. We can keep Catfish and Tilapia in separate ponds.
      For the chicken hut build, we had a budget of 25-30k baht in mind and will be building it as big as the budget allows. We want to go as big as we can now so later down the line we can add more chickens without having to build another.
      For the feed, we currently are paying 500 baht for 30kg sack, and we currently feed 2 sacks per week. But we'll have to contact wholesalers and see what kind of prices they can offer. I'm sure it'll be much less, especially buying it in bulk supply.

      Please keep in mind, chickens as you already know emits lots of odor. You guys live there and have to deal with the odor as well as near by neighbors etc..I am all for supporting your goals but please think it through. And see what others are doing in the same situation as yours@@NativeFarang

    • @NativeFarang
      @NativeFarang  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@brucewayne2773 Ahh yes of course. With the new chicken house, we aim to design it so it's much easier to clean out. It's not going to be too close to the house, so we shouldn't really smell the odors. I think separating the chickens into 4 or 5 different rooms will be beneficial as well. It should make it easier for us to clean as each room starts to smell. So far our current hut doesn't really emit bad odors, we hardly smell it, but we have kept up with maintaining it regularly, cleaning the pen and changing the hay ect... of course doing it on a bigger scale is different.
      Would be good to visit some commercial chicken farms but around here they're hard to find as not many are doing it on a large scale. Don't worry I'm doing my research haha reading and watching videos on it all the time 😂 I get like that when I have an idea in my head.

      Ohh wow a million chickens! 😱 I could imagine the smell for sure! I think 500-1000 will be manageable, we will keep up with regular maintenance so it shouldn't smell too bad 🤞

    Big plans - sounds brilliant- I think you could get the pond for free - just tell Mason he can dig a huge hole in your garden - he just needs to hire his own digger. I think you guys have done great with the trenches- but if it doesn’t work OR is too time consuming, then best to go for plan B. Keep an eye on eggs production verses feed consumption. Birds will slow down or even stop at some stage. Margins are slim so prepare yourself to sell off the flock when production hits the minimum profit stage

    • @brucewayne2773
      @brucewayne2773 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chickens are only good for 2 years and off to the slaughter. You are spot on regarding production over their lifespan.

    • @NativeFarang
      @NativeFarang  ปีที่แล้ว

      Very good advice! We definitely will keep a close eye on profits once we're up and running. Definitely can't afford to be making a loss doing this. But we do plan on looking at breeding them in the near future so hopefully once the flock slows down for egg production we can replace with new hens ☺️

    • @NativeFarang
      @NativeFarang  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good advice Bruce! Definitely will keep a close eye on the amount of eggs they produce each day. If we notice a big trend then it maybe time to get rid of the old flock and get new ones in 👍

  • @yadong8037
    @yadong8037 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Great idea to expand your chicken industry. You should also feed them some eggshells cause they need the calcium to build the eggs. If thy don't get enough the egshells will be thinner and thinner. So if you fry yourself some eggs let the shells dry and crush them a little bit and give it back to them. You will see that they like it. Was Camilla hiding behind the camera? It is allways lovely to see her.

    • @NativeFarang

    You are doing a terrific job with your chickens.
    They look happy and healthy .
    You have the right idea about reducing costs with rice husks and and leaf left overs from growing vegetables .
    You both have really done it , a one thousand baht income per day will go quite a way in Thailand .
    Just make sure they are secure in their pens and free from disease .
    Chickens are less resilient to disease than ducks more vulnerable .
    Duck eggs are very popular in Thailand and duck meat more expensive .
    Did you ever think of keeping a few ducks , they could possibly eat the same feed and greens as the chickens .

    • @NativeFarang
      @NativeFarang  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! We will keep plucking away at this 😉
      Definitely if we are increasing the amount of chickens we need to reduce the costs, will be looking at all methods for sure.
      We did consider ducks as we love duck eggs! But I think we would have to dig a small pond and build a hut to enclose them so not sure if it's viable for our little farm. Maybe if we aquire more land in future!

    The most important thing with the chickens is security. The building should built cheap as long as it’s secure . Also consider chicken tractors to move the chickens around the property it puts nitrogen in the soil and is good for the birds. What about meat birds ? Also a breeding program to add to the flock and also sell. Good luck

    • @NativeFarang
      @NativeFarang  ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure! We have lizards and snakes that will come and kill the hens. But we are going to put abit of cash into this project and make sure it's secure. It'll be a big loss if that many chickens die so gotta protect them. Also yes we will be looking into breeding them in the near future, we will have a dedicated space to do so 😊

    I have 100% faith in you both, if you work at it, it will happen. Grading your eggs will help you get a better price for them as well.

You are a fish expert, use what you have learned through your work experience. People want to buy fish but not just for food. Wealthy Thai's are obsessed with decorative fish for house and garden. We bought the chickens from a local farm around 40 minutes away from us! I'll be honest it was difficult to find someone selling laying hens as like you say, most are chickens for meat/fighting etc. But if you look hard enough there will be someone selling 😁 Thank you so much 🙏

    hi nat your chickens will peck scratch and eat almost anything, try putting some of your grass strimmings into their pen and watch them to see what types they like the most they will eat almost all greens, its free and will supplement their diet, or if your local market stalls have any greens or vegetable waste from their stalls you could have Thanks for sharing

    Maybe you should also look into rabbits...not only do they grow faster, easier and cheaper (eating gras) its also different and more expensive meat, but also urin can be sold as a fertiliser that is also used as a natural pesticide. Usually the sale of the urin alone will break you even and the meat is all profit.

    • @christiandengler6689

    • @Neednoy2

      Thais don't eat rabbits. They are for pets. But if he can find a Weatern restaurant and supply rabbit meat it could be profitable.

    • @christiandengler6689
      @christiandengler6689 ปีที่แล้ว

      @narumon_bb2376 offer the meat cheap and you will have buyers, even among Thais....I heard the same response in Africa (Nigeria) like 5 years back. I didn't go through with it but a friend did. Gave out some free meat and now he's got a good customer base and expanding the farm which makes very good business! (As said much of the money even comes from the excrements as fertiliser and organic pesticide, not just the meat)

    • @NativeFarang
      @NativeFarang  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very interesting! That could be a future project for us in the future! We would need a buyer if we were to breed them. Not sure where I would find a rabbit buyer haha but I'll keep an eye out for sure! Natural pesticides are expensive to buy so that's very interesting, even if we collected it for our own plants.

      Ahh yes, there's plenty of options on lazada for pellet machines. I think we'd have to get a motorized one though as we'd need to produce a lot of pellets when we expand. I would say our land is similar in size, it's long, probably 120-150 metres all the way to the back. Also 30-40 metres wide I would say too.

    • @skyfarmorganics
      @skyfarmorganics ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@NativeFarang reducing your feed costs is obviously a good move and what we do also on our farm. Just need to be careful. Your current chickens are free to range outside their coup which is awesome as they will eat some vegetables you throw them and eat some grubs etc and that surely supplements their diet and helps reduce your feed costs. In your video you say you go through about 2 sacks of commercial feed a week which if the case means each chicken is eating about 85g of commercial feed per day which is what I would expect for free range chickens (hens will usually eat 110-120g of commercial feed per day if that's all they are fed. For your new chicken farm buildings if you're planning to keep them all inside the coups and not free to range outside then bear in mind that they won't have grubs and bugs to eat outside. You can breed some grubs to feed them directly (such as Black Soldier Fly Larvae) or grow some Azolla in shallow ponds with manure substrate and that will help reduce commercial feed and still give them the essential proteins, fats, minerals and vitamins they need. You could also buy ground corn (very small pieces rather than cornmeal powder) and give them some of that each day. I'm on the Discord channel (Sky Farm - Duncan) although rarely look at it as haven't got so much time to trawl through it all and happy to discuss more with you if needed.

    Sustainable farming way to go. Though not for everyone (people living in a city /or no land). Price check 20 aldi eggs LARGE here in Ireland 4.65 euro (4gbp). That is quite low price??? . People would be too busy to bother keeping hens unless on huge scale for such a low price. Can imagine in Germany/ Holland even cheaper. Also here the farmers not getting a fair price really from big supermarkets. Farming in eu regulated out of existence now .....they even talking nitrate levels must be reduced on farms meaning reduction in herds.
