      The SS3 Max has 4 HX boost LEDs and guess what you can only push the LEDs so far before you run into thermal regulation... Each HX Boost is 20w of rated power and 4 of them is 80w and it's too much heat dissipation for a 4 in housing to handle. It might be bright initially but after a few min it will get hit then it will lower the output a bit. Just like a computer cpu gets hot thermal throttles and fan kicks on to cool it. It's called active cooling and works great when in a dry enclosure vs all (mostly) outdoor lights can't use active cooling with a fan since dirt and water will shorten the life span so they need a passive cooling solution, which is a big hunk of metal and fins for air to move passively but theres a limit to that... IMHO .02

    Is the Wide beam pattern going to be SAE J583 certified? This is the first time I heard it mentioned that it will be. Also, when you have an updated video on testing, please show in the results the output after temperature stabilization 20-30 min of runtime. Many manufactures use initial brightness as their listed specification. It is somewhat of a meaningless claim of brightness if after 15min + runtime they stabilize to less than that of other lights. This is very noticeable with Baja Designs and I'm curious how these will compare in that aspect as the housing and heat sinks are not as significant as others, like the Diode Dynamics. I really question the claim of "20%" more intensity than the SS3 Max, especially after temp stabilization. Especially knowing the same LED chip is used on both (4Banger HXB and SS3 Max), there is 1 less LED in the 4Banger and that DD is the originator of TIR in mass use. Either way, I'm curious to see legitimate testing done (unlike HR's videos) and competition is always good as it forces improvement from other manufactures.

    • @RetrofitSource
      @RetrofitSource  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The wide beam pattern is designed to be SAE J583 compliant.
      HXB stabilization happens around the 20-30 min mark, if you check HXB and SS3 Max after 15 mins, SS3 is about the same brightness. At the 1h mark, then HXB will show higher brightness.
      Using one less emitter has nothing to do with the overall brightness. It is driven harder on each emitter and also, beam focus composition is different.
      Each emitter can be driven harder since the cooling design of the 4Banger is much more efficient than that of competitors.
      The reason HXB can be brighter, is simply because it was designed to create a center hot spot, just as many OEM fog lights do.
      Also, DD is NOT the originator of TIR, TIR was introduced to the market by Philips back in 2001. Many automotive applications have used TIR optics the last 20 years. This is not a new tech. Don't get me wrong... the SS3 is a great light and Diode did a good job. TRS is one of Diode's biggest customers! But don't spend too much time stuck on the lens tech. It's not owned or invented by either brand.

    "Wide" and "Fog" optic patterns are not the same, and SAE J583 compliance is critical for a legal and useful fog light. By using the terms "fog beam" and "wide beam" and "SAE beam" interchangeably, you're muddying the waters here a lot. These are not going to be useful or legal to use as a fog light, and the pattern is much too narrow.
