Other Africas: Slavery and Black Heritage in Rio de Janeiro (Full HD Documentary) EN subtitles

  • By André Cicalo. This documentary (Portuguese with English subtitles) discusses the remembering of Atlantic slavery in the port region of Rio de Janeiro, after its prolonged forgetting within the city's official history. In 2011 the city council of Rio de Janeiro has established a Circuit of African Heritage in the port area, after discovering archaeological remains of slave-trade docks during works of urban regeneration. The film describes some of the aspects of how Afro-Brazilian heritage is being created and appropriated in the area. That said, "Other Africas" also raises questions about how the memorialisation of the black people's past intersects with processes of urban regeneration of the waterfront in Rio (particularly in view of the 2016 Olympics) and also with the current scenario of racial politics in Brazil.
I feel extremely grateful to the people who agreed to give their testimonies for this film, which was entirely directed, filmed, and edited by myself. I hope you will enjoy this free-access audiovisual product, help share it with others, and use it for educational purposes. This is a great documentary. Issues similar to USA with gentrification. Also the burial ground similar to the ones found in New York and Dallas. When there was building work in New York, and Freeway expansion in Dallas, was when the forgotten burial sites of slaves and freedmen where discovered.

Sarah, you are actually correct. They are wasting time and energy with these false deities. Where were those deities then? But clearly our God of the Bible did warn us this would happen to us but He would not forget us entirely if we return to Him. It's time for us to reconsider and return to our Maker. The God of Jacob!

I was there in 2011 to 13 when the afro Brazilian descendants were being displaced by this vanity project. Old traditions need to be documented in the archives and kept alive as part of world heritage. The pint isn’t DNA ...the black woman at the start said, they gave no education, no schools, no doctors or hospitals in the favela or near. That is the pint. Not a DNA test. They need clean water and proper services to be able to live and progress. You will never see black people employed on administrative roles or office work. I was with my friend shopping. The security would not let him in with me so I walked away. They can play more music for the tourists and entertain them in the luxury hotels but are not allowed into the shopping areas. I was trying to get funding for my anthropology research which so far I have e paid for myself. To document the social injustices I experienced whilst living there for 3 years. It’s now out of bounds for us to go there. That we need to document the cultural and ritual customs as well as provide clean water and services is more critical than ever.

I grow up in Brazil specifically in Rio, my family lived in a favela for about 3-4 we worked hard and got out of that poor situation, the sad thing that most get accommodated there and generations grow up there in misery... Like being in the favela is a life style! As a kid I went to school and learned as much as anybody else, and I can testify that victim hood is real! Black folks is Brazil were not treated like in the US, 50's, 60's and '70 and so forth nothing like in the US! Yes as slaves they were treated worse than American slaves because the Portuguese thought that was easier to replace a slave than treat their illness... ( and that will never be accepted in my book!) I think social media destroyed our harmony, from 1990's to present, I am in my late 50's and I am so sad that this racial division is now part of a country that used to celebrate diversity... Farther more the affluent Africans come over and instead of an apology and a compensation for their ancestors selling their fellow tribes, just and more hate and division... As far as I am concerned Mother Africa is as guilty as the colonizers!

Tambem no OXALA conheci a cozinheira Dona Helean, o segredo do restuarante. Eu sinto a presenca dela ate hoje.

At 5 mins she’s saying that they do t have money to trace ancestry. Please note: ALL in so called 1st world countries can not afford it at all either! The DNA 🧬 tests should be anonymous my numbers as there isn’t the trust for the sensitive information to be shared appropriately. There needs to be protection of the samples as well. Further- the expense should be included in reparations packages instead of written or verbal apologies.

    • @andrecicalo8248

I agree it's expensive, but perhaps buying a DNA test is also matter of culture and politics...and black politics in Brazil are much less developed than in the United States. I also share your view on test anonymity. This is a growing concern everywhere. The reparation package including DNA test is something interesting I had never though before.
