Newer boaters here as well. Last year we bought a Chris Craft 381 and it was the first boat we looked at too. It was not going to be our 1st boat to look at but we went a week earlier to MI and checked it out. It was nicer in person than the photos and the engine bay was spotless. Looked at 2 others in Sandusky and we kept going back to that first boat we looked at and ended up buying it.

My wife and I with our kids 4 and 6 took our 85 prout 37 from Canada to Turks and Caicod. Was a gr8 boat for us .Yours looks in nice cond and well equipped. NNICE 1
That looks like a Prout - 37 ft? A Prout is a great buy! Like the Moody, they are built to last :) Not modern, not "pretty" ... but comfy, homey, safe, sturdy and everything else that matters! Wishing you lots of happy seasons on her 😊
Spot on! Great eye! It’s an 87 Prout Snowgoose Elite 🙂 it definitely has a more homey feel than a lot of the production cats in our opinion. Can’t wait to share the full tour soon. Thanks for watching and all the kind words!
Prouts are great boats. I sailed one for several weeks a few years ago, including a couple of solo passages and the mast back rig with the small main and big headsail makes it a super easy craft to sail from the cockpit without ever going on deck. They aren't the fastest or the most comfortable vessel inside under way but they are tough and you can have the comfort of knowing they're proven ocean passage makers over many years. And they're a hell of a lot cheaper than any modern cat! Good choice for a first boat but i have a feeling it won't be more than a couple of years before you start looking for more performance and comfort.
Thanks for the comment! Yeah, very sturdy and reliable vessels, and the previous owner did most of the sailing single handed. Seems like a great choice for us as we are learning and very new to it. We realize this boat may not be forever for us, but hope we can spend the next 3-5 years exploring and seeing if this lifestyle is for us, but so far so very good 🙂
Great stuff, good luck, and following seas to you. I follow another channel that started like you and they have learnt heaps…. it might be worth watching their sailing journey. PDG Sailing Adventures
Thanks for the kind words! We will check them out! Sometimes people forget everyone starts out as a beginner 😂 but great to see others do the thing you are trying to do 🙂
Amazing comment! Indeed an 87 Prout Snowgoose Elite 37, such a comfortable size to life on full time while learning and they are built to last! The previous owner said "You won't ever get there first, but you will always get there" Thanks for watching!
Welp, new sailing channel to keep up with! I wish you both all the best with your purchase. Boats are A LOT of work and I'm gunna be sticking around to watch the updates!!!
Thanks so much for watching! We really hope to share both the good and the bad here to keep things honest :) They say owning a boat is just boat work in interesting places 😂 so very prepared to put in the elbow grease (The van felt very similar, the amount of projects done in forest and deserts, but always something to do!)
Pretty much all of Rural PA is trailer park territory so I see where you're coming from. But my parents were lucky enough to have a house.@@hterrebrood
Congrats on the boat. We just did something similar. We only have 2 episodes out ourselves. The lagoon 380 fit our vibe and budget. We are still learning what we are doing 😊
@@patrickandmichaela yeah if I waited to learn everything it would have taken so much longer. I was ready to just go figure it out. I really like the layout of your boat. Do you plan on doing any Caribbean cruising?
Best way to do it for sure! We love the open feel of our boat as well, definitely plan to do some Caribbean cruising, hopefully some this season, definitely the main focus of next :)
@patrickandmichaela So excited to catch the start of your new boating adventure!! Question for someone looking to start their own boat journey. Did you have institutions in mind to finance your boat purchase? It seems like everywhere I look for liveaboard financing, I hit a dead ends at recreational boats only?!?!
Thank you so much for the kind words! We ended up going with a boat we could pay cash for, because financing did indeed seem to be a headache. We did have some discussions with a Zack Homeric from Azul Marine Lending who seemed super knowledgable and did not seem to throw any flags buying a liveaboard boat. Was a recommendation from someone we super respect in the industry, so maybe give them a call!
The Hardest part is getting in and out of the port in a different conditions even for the experienced sailers. Get a maneuver training, it will make it much more safe and easy.
Prout is a good first boat, fully depreciated, very very solid. small mainsail, unpopular with americans with more $'s (and aspirations ) than experience (sailing and real-world). Well done
We couldn’t agree more! We love the time and care that went into the building and upkeep of this boat. Should be a great first home on the water for us. Thanks so much for watching!
New boat day is happy. First purchase is some proper dry bags. Plan on all your cameras breaking. Check the prop on that outboard it sounds off to me. Assume all systems have problems. It is less disappointing that way. Prove to yourself you can get to the top of the mast, both of you. If it is gonna happen its gonna happen out there.
A happy day indeed! Great call out! The cover on the outboard actually wasn’t seated correctly which honestly made a night and day difference in how it sounds. Went to check the spark plugs and when I put the cover back on it went from so loud to just, well normal outboard loud. We are ready to have to fix everything, twice, at least :) thanks for watching and all the advice!
The biggest difference between monos and cats is roll at anchor.. where you’ll spend 99% of your time. Cats win hands down and while the Prouts are an old design, they’re safe and stable. Also, a lot of folks like the channels with older boats as you’ll be tinkering as you go.
Was really a big part of our decision as well. Love the slow travel which means having comfort at anchor is ideal. We love our old prout snowgoose, will be a lot to keep her in good condition but will be worth it ❤
Prout makes a great sailing vessel. Take it at a slower pace.....but not to slow to never move the needle. Ask for some more training as that is always good when one is brand new.🤭🌞 If you did not get a survey, at least get an inspection of some kind to actually know what you are dealing with and what servicing / updates / repairs you may need before taking off into the wide blue yonder. ❤ Take care of your new home and she will take care of you. BON VOYAGE 🎉🙌🏻🎉
Thank you so much for the kind words! We are ready to jump in with both feet, but getting lessons is top of our list so we can feel confident sailing on our own
Those gel pens are my favorite, im sure finally having a permanent space to have and put your stuff feels amazing, it looks so nice! The silence and sky will be unbeatable at night, you guys should look into astrophotography at night that was a NICE manatee - coincidence the name of the boat you bought was mary haha
It has been awesome having a spot to finally call home, but also getting all the stuff we need to live in it has been painful 😂 Can’t wait to get out of Miami and get some starry nights!
I once had a Snowgoose 35 which I sailed from Europe to Australia back in the early 80s. As these boats have a low clearance under the bridge deck, avoid bumping into the waves. The ability to fall dry at low tide is an immense advantage once you go into the pacific. Also beaching the boat ( with stern anchor ) is great. I have some pictures on Instagram. Fair winds!
It would be a good time to get into the habit of clipping the kill switch lanyard to your vest. They can slip over your hand as you fall overboard. It would be bad! Good luck with your brand new lifestyle, we’ll be watching.
prout is a very well boat ans seen around the west coast and the south pacfic. In fact I was anchored next to one on Huahine, French Polynesia for about 3 weels. Owned by a nice French couple. BTW I'm a 200 ton yacht delivery captain
Wow! How rad to get to have sailed in French Polynesia, it is certainly a dream location for us one day! Very cool to be a 200 ton yacht captain :) Thanks so much for watching!
Thick boats are good! My boat was built in 1973.... fiberglass was a new material back then. No osmosis, bulkheads still strong. - my point; sometimes old is better.
@@patrickandmichaela I was actually thinking as an editor that other stuff could’ve been cut out and those bloopers should’ve been left in but critiquing a video that’s all release is kind of like crying over spilt milk. The editor of the Sailing Instructor from Kansas City thanks for replying back.
Nothing wrong with the Prout Cats. they were very well made... I also went with a pre modern charter cat... and love it.. there was book I had by a survayor that helped me sift through all the different options for Cats Pre 2000. I went with a Privledge. but you got a nice Cat that you could do the French canals with. it is narrow enough to go through the canals north to south. a good book for you to read is " sailing Promise" by Alayne Main... she was a doctor and her husband bought the same boat as yours and they sailed around the world. very well written.. she had no experiance.. and it talks about some learning processes.. good boat to learn on.. very safe... and it has legs... and you know what.. its afordable.. and even if you have to change the engine... yes one engine... as i recall that year of prout had the single engine... with long leg. so you loose the redundancy of twin engines.. and the manouvaerabilty of two... but you reduce costs... and lets be serious... i have only needed that redundacy twice in the last ten years... and in all honesty.. i could have parked the boat with the dingy tied along side... good luck... and hope you love the life... its fun... Read lots... always have a weather eye... and learn and learn and learn... you got a good foundation boat.
Wow! Thanks for the comment! Congrats on the Privilege! They are fantastic boats as well. This boat has been through the french canals and across the Atlantic in the past decade. l We will check out Sailing Promise! Sounds like a fantastic book right up our alley
@@patrickandmichaela Glad to hear you have a newer engine... that Yanmar should last 30 years if you care for it. get a good weather service and go have fun in the Bahamas... just remmember you have to be out of the bahamas by June. and mind the gulf stream. wind against wave is nothing to joke about. but the bahamas are fun... stock up.. and go have a good time. great place to learn to sail.

Wishing you both the best of luck on your adventures. My recommendation is to find a mentor and take them sailing with you in "sporty" conditions. That's not the kind of thing that you want to experience for the first time with just the two of you aboard but it is something that you will encounter many times. Practice for it so that you know the skills in your sleep. Remember the saying - Fair weather does not make good sailors.

Such lovely words, thank you so much for taking the time to write to us ❤
I'll jump on board your channel! Glad you are bringing a Prout to TH-cam.
So happy to have you here with us! We love our prout, so much character ❤
Looking forward to follow you guys. You are starting the dream I have a plan on doing in about 3-4 years :D
So glad to have you on this journey with us! Hopefully we can give a pretty good idea of what it's like to get started :) Thanks so much for coming along!
@@patrickandmichaela 100% I am working on getting myself on the same journey. Financing is the one that is difficult for me. Not that strong finically atm.
Congrats on the boat! Sometimes you just know and have to follow that instinct! Fair winds and following seas to yall and hopefully see you on the water one day!
Stunning vessel, so pleased for you both. Cannot wait to get ours on the water.
Thanks, and yes, she certainly is! So excited for y'all to get on the water as well
Wow Wow Wow, I am following all the major sailing channels and this is the first time I ever leave a comment, The way you guys show the reality of things is amazing. The struggles and the commitment is super awesome. I am immediately following and added notifcations for this page as this is going to be a super adventure!!!!! Please dont change the way you do things as it shows the real side of things and not just the production poritions,
Wow Mike! This comment really made us smile! Thank you for such kind words

Hey Guys my name is Karson I am 28 and have been looking at boats for the last few years. But because of my career I cannot have a boat yet. So I will watch yalls channel with great enthusiasm.
Hello Karson! Thanks so much for joining us on our journey
The right choice for you! Sailing is not practical. It's emotional. Have fun!
Thanks so much!
Dope. I watch a lot of sailing channels. It's nice to see one in the early stages. Good luck on your journey.
Thank you so much
Awesome you've both taken the leap, 😊 it's only go a get better from this point love and blessings ro you both. You will not regret it.
Thank you so much for the kind words, I am sure there will be very specific times we _really_ regret it, but even looking back at the hard times you wouldn't trade it for the world. High highs and low lows after all
Congratulations! Subscribed. Can’t wait to see your adventures!
Thank you so much for joining us on this journey!
I follow a bunch of cruisers, hence You Tube suggested your page to me. Looking forward to starting from the beginning. Lots of luck and fair weather. Oh, get your self a good drone if you haven't already.
Thanks for joining our Journey! We are super excited to get started! We have a drone and looking forward to using it once we get out of this mooring field :)
Every thing recorded should have bloopers! Just cool.
Lol we certainly do our best to keep them in 😅 But we are kind of goofy so the split between a good take and a blooper can be a little close to call 😂 Thanks for watching! ⛵🎉
And a new couple decides to live aboard their boat. Welcome and good luck on your travells.
New to boat life, been a couple for over 10 years :) Thanks for the kind words!
Wow here’s to the new adventures. Can’t wait to see them . Where are you guys at in the video ? Florida ?
Yes! We are just outside of Miami, it’s where the previous owners flew out of to head back to Europe :)
Thanks so much for watching!
Wow. Congratulations! Can't wait to do the same some day. Will be following you in your journey :-). Love the vibe.
Thank you so much for joining us on this adventure
New to your channel, but really looking forward to your sailing adventures. Your excitement coming through the screen is infectious, I love it. Great vlog. :)
Thank you so much for joining us on this journey! We are both so excited (and a little bit terrified) but really looking forward to giving it all we have
My wife and I with our kids 4 and 6 took our 85 prout 37 from Canada to Turks and Caicod. Was a gr8 boat for us .Yours looks in nice cond and well equipped. NNICE 1
Sounds like such an amazing adventure! Thanks for watching and here is to hoping our prout can do us just as well ❤️
That looks like a Prout - 37 ft? A Prout is a great buy! Like the Moody, they are built to last :) Not modern, not "pretty" ... but comfy, homey, safe, sturdy and everything else that matters! Wishing you lots of happy seasons on her 😊
Spot on! Great eye! It’s an 87 Prout Snowgoose Elite 🙂 it definitely has a more homey feel than a lot of the production cats in our opinion. Can’t wait to share the full tour soon.
Thanks for watching and all the kind words!
New Subscriber (Just ran across your page) and looking forward to getting caught up and the following along on your adventures! WooT WooT !!! :)
So glad you found us! We are super excited to have you on this journey with us 🙂 🎉⛵

Thank you so much for coming along on this adventure with us
Oh I just found your channel and I subscribed I cant wait to see all the adventures!!!
Thank you so much for coming along with us on this journey! We really appreciate having you here
Prouts are great boats.
We realize this boat may not be forever for us, but hope we can spend the next 3-5 years exploring and seeing if this lifestyle is for us, but so far so very good 🙂
Thank you for episode 1! I. I would look at the veteran sailing channels and go to their first 50 episodes. You guys will do this!
Thank you so much for the kind words, we have watched so much youtube sailing -- such inspirational and informational content out there
Can't wait for more have subscribed. Want to see this from a beginner point of view..
Thanks for tagging along! I’m sure there will be plenty of mistakes and tons of research and learning but couldn’t be more up for the challenge ❤️
Great stuff, good luck, and following seas to you. I follow another channel that started like you and they have learnt heaps…. it might be worth watching their sailing journey. PDG Sailing Adventures
Thanks for the kind words! We will check them out! Sometimes people forget everyone starts out as a beginner 😂 but great to see others do the thing you are trying to do 🙂
Good on you! That looks like a Prout Snowgoose, if so, that's a great choice as a first boat and she looks in good nick for an older lady.
Amazing comment! Indeed an 87 Prout Snowgoose Elite 37, such a comfortable size to life on full time while learning and they are built to last! The previous owner said "You won't ever get there first, but you will always get there" Thanks for watching!
Well thank god you said the name. I was going back and forth on the video
Sweet! Another sailing channel, and I love getting to follow from the get go. How often do you plan to post new videos?
We love having you along for the journey! Every Sunday at 6 pm eastern time!
Welp is not a word outside of the trailer park
Pretty much all of Rural PA is trailer park territory so I see where you're coming from. But my parents were lucky enough to have a house.@@hterrebrood
@@hterrebrood Welp, that was a pretty rude and uncalled for comment!
@@hterrebroodWelp, there's one in every group!
Congrats on the boat. We just did something similar. We only have 2 episodes out ourselves. The lagoon 380 fit our vibe and budget. We are still learning what we are doing 😊
No better way to learn than by doing! Congrats on the Lagoon! Totally see the appeal of them, just wasn't quite right for us at the moment 😄
Congrats, looking forward to share in your adventure! 🎉
Thank you! Looking forward to sharing it with you
@patrickandmichaela So excited to catch the start of your new boating adventure!!
@@patrickandmichaela awesome, thanks for the recommendation!! Currently watching episode #2!
The Hardest part is getting in and out of the port in a different conditions even for the experienced sailers. Get a maneuver training, it will make it much more safe and easy.
Great advice! And something we definitely are (required by insurance) to do :)
Congratulations great choice of boat. You will love it.🎉
Thank you! It already feels like home
Welcome to the liveaboard life! It's the best!
Thank you so much! Seems to be filled with pretty high highs and low lows but we are here for it!
Congrats on the new boat.. enjoy
Thanks so much for the kind words ❤️
The silence and sky will be unbeatable at night, you guys should look into astrophotography at night
that was a NICE manatee - coincidence the name of the boat you bought was mary haha
It has been awesome having a spot to finally call home, but also getting all the stuff we need to live in it has been painful 😂
Can’t wait to get out of Miami and get some starry nights!
Fair winds!
We will have to check out your Instagram! Excited to see how the boat handles, but have heard so many good things! Thanks for watching
It would be a good time to get into the habit of clipping the kill switch lanyard to your vest. They can slip over your hand as you fall overboard. It would be bad!
Good luck with your brand new lifestyle, we’ll be watching.
Wow! Something to think about for sure! Thanks for the comment
prout is a very well boat ans seen around the west coast and the south pacfic.
Nice boat, happy sailings!
Thanks so much! Love our new home
Thick boats are good! My boat was built in 1973.... fiberglass was a new material back then. No osmosis, bulkheads still strong. - my point; sometimes old is better.
Agreed! The lack of trust in fiberglass made some incredibly beefy older boats! Don't make em like they used to :) Thanks for watching!
Hey , Sailing Project Atticus has a great series of buying a boat, lots of great information.
We have seen a lot of Sailing Project Atticus's stuff, absolute legends!
Really like the ending with the bloopers I was good piece of content. I enjoyed that. Thank you for making this video.
We also like to leave them in, think its a funny peek at how silly this whole thing is :) So glad that you enjoyed the video
This boat has been through the french canals and across the Atlantic in the past decade. l
We will check out Sailing Promise!
Subscribed and excited to start this sailing adventure with you! Where is our first port of call 😉?
Thanks for coming along on this adventure with us! We are currently a bit stuck in Miami, but first destination is off to Bimini! Need to get to that crystal clear water
Yay🎉, happy for you both
Thank you! ❤️
WeSail with Erica & Warren is another great channel. You could learn a lot from them.
Thanks for the suggestion! We will certainly check them out!
The inside looks so cozy!!! How about a tour?
We will have a full tour of the boat up as soon as we can! Can’t wait to show her off
Good luck to you guys. Indeed the earlier glass Boats were overdone much to your advantage.
Thank you
Obviously the right choice for you!
It finally feels like we have found the thing we want to be doing! Maybe not always in every place, but the lifestyle seems very fitting 🙂 Thanks for checking out our video!
Congratulations on your First Boat 🚢. I remember my first Boat 🚢. A 42' aft cabin motor yawt.
Just remember, take care of the boat and she will take care of you.
Now the learning part at first is going to be like Drinking from a Fire 🔥 Hose! But you will lean and it slow 🐌 down .But you will Laugh and cry and bleed Money 💰, " Oooo and there maybe real blood " So keep some band-aids close at hand.
So be ready for some long days on the hard and get ready for the Adventure of a lifetime.
So until next time ⏲️, Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii! Cheers 🍻 and Aloha
This boat has clearly been loved and we have no intention of stopping 😄 We know it will be an adventure with many very high highs and super low lows, but are excited for it all nonetheless!
Thanks so much for tagging along on our journey and hopefully see you on the water in Hawaii one day! Aloha 🍻
@@patrickandmichaela I will keep an eye on the Horizon for your sails ⛵️ from our lanai!

Ahoy kids..., I don't want to say I envy you..., but... . I'm 74 & want to make m'move this year via that live aboard cat & I too inexperienced. (I love that vintage Catalac 12M!) You mentioned The O'Kelly's. Been following them / Onboard Lifestyles / SailAway awhile. Good sites that whetted m'desires to do. I'll follow you kids too to see how it goes & learn too from your trials & errors..., (LOL) So, wishing you kids the best & "fair winds...". 🌅⛵🌊
Ahoy! Thanks for tagging along, I am sure it is going to be filled with plenty of high highs and low lows 😂 Never too late to start something new :) Hopefully see you on the water soon!
Thanks so much! I think this is really good advice!
awsome i am going to follow your journey
Thanks! We really appreciate having you here!
Congratulations. I forgot how low the bridge deck clearance was on those early Prouts.
We like to joke it is practically a trimaran the way that the middle hull dips into the water 😂 Stellar construction though! Thanks for watching 😄
Instant sub, you folks are doing exact samething i want to do love it way to take your dream and dive in
Thank you so much for coming along with us in this adventure ❤️ hopefully we can shed some light on what you are in for when you go for it!
