This is so powerful. I’m not sure but it sounds like what an Aunt would tell me as a child; “children were meant to be seen and not heard,” but in reality - in her home - depending on circumstance - children weren’t seen at all. It was rare but I remember feeling muted and practically invisible.... in a place I considered home. Like we just extras in their movie. Great dialogue. Love these episodes.

      S. D. Great comment, and immensely true of children raised by boomers, and earlier. Painful. Sometimes my mother still doesn’t see me.

#LadyJ1985 Thanks for the response. I hope future generations are able to break the cycle. Glad writing was cathartic for Tracy. Hope you found ways to safely air your frustrations, painting became my release.

I felt completely invisible too as a child, particularly with my mother.

When I saw the movie version of August: Osage County, I was awestruck and moved by how powerful the movie was. To this day, all these years later, I still think it's one of the greatest movies I've ever seen. Tracy Letts will forever have my love, appreciation and respect for creating a timeless masterpiece.

My sister says: "originality is directly proportional to the obscurity of your sources". August:Osage is no doubt powerful. But no mentions so far as I've seen of Eugene O'Neal-"Long Days Journey into Night". A little humbling, no?

I am so glad someone wrote this story. But while all families can be complex it doesn't mean that one should just take the abuse. We're all worthy of respect.

He showed such skill in August. Rare air. It reminded me of Albee and O'Neill.

I think it’s remarkable it only took him 30 years to write August Osange Orange, his grandfather passed at 10, he wrote it at 40. I been so numb and in Stockholm. At 48, occurred to me the whole family, bullying, shaming, scapegoating, blaming and belittling nephew. Woke up intergenerational family scapegoating wrong. So wrote children’s picture book Scapegoat, and hoping Tracy Letts adapts for theatre. 🎭 As extended families, friends, teachers, children and grandparents need a blueprint, encouragement, how to step up and protect the family scapegoat kid.

I had the opportunity to play Lady in Superior Donuts in a small town theater production the year my father died. It was the last thing he saw me in. He was a Marine in Vietnam so I wasn't sure how he'd react to the play's content, but it was favorable. The last three years with him were very 'Osage County' like and I love you Tracy Letts for all you do as an actor/writer/director and human. This is why.... art.
