People seem to think that zero wastes means ZERO waste, absolutely none whatsoever. Which is why I don’t like calling it “zero waste”, I call it minimal waste; signifying that I’m trying to create as minimal waste as I possibly can.
Also it takes a LONG time to transition into the minimal waste lifestyle that you want to live. And even then there are times (like you’ve said) there are things you can’t find in minimal waste that you need... or even you may not have a package free grocery stores anywhere near you, so you have to buy a few things in packaging (which fricken sucks)

I definitely have been thinking about this a lot lately! I don't think I personally am smart enough so I think I'm going to try and find an expert who is better educated than I am to talk about it in a video! But until then, Shelbi is definitely FAR smarter and better educated than I in it and I think her videos will explain a lot better than I can 💛

my parents have wild blackberry bushes near them and occasionally they will pick them for snacks and smoothies, but recently my father had mentioned that he dug up a wild plant (he likes to garden) and is attempting to grow it in his backyard, which i think is pretty cool. i also convinced him previously to start composting for the sake of his garden, and seeing other people around me make a positive influence is really inspiring. this is why i chose to have faith in our earth, and i am so glad to have found a community who shares my hope and passion.

@UCDh5n0GXE8YK0JHu8lIWL5Q what are they supposed to do with them? Please explain what benefit you think they get from receiving your inedible scraps?
(And if course they said that, what are they supposed to say when someone gives them something (even if it's literal garbage)? There's a power dynamic at work in that situation, they're not going to seem ungrateful because there's the chance that they won't be given anything else (that's actually useful) if they don't show gratitude for every little thing.)

sanityisrelative I think they are talking about putting your extra food into a bin that will turn into fertilizer for their plants! Composting is a good way to take care of waste (food scraps) and doesn’t relate to homeless people. But you are very sweet for looking out for those homeless people.

Hi, recycling nerd here! Your explanation was pretty good!
In general, my hierarchy of recyclability goes about like this: aluminum (bean cans, beverage containers, etc), cardboard, hard plastics (thicker the better), regular paper, glass, soft plastic (like bags).
Soft plastics can definitely be recycled at your local grocery store, there's usually a bin in the lobby but don't put them in your curbside bin, they create lots of problems for the machines at recycling plants.
Glass usually just gets ground into a filler for concrete which is why it's lower on my list. There are some markets in the US (salt lake City off the top of my head) that are creating a circular economy for glass locally which is awesome.
I could go on and on, I have a few insta highlight stories about recycling and you can dm me if you have questions. I'm @reebsrebareb on insta, I don't participate on TH-cam much.

    • @likewhoa31
      @likewhoa31 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes!! The glass recycling program in my community (OBX NC) is circular in that they grind up recycled glass and turn it into a “mulch” for driveways and yard cover that is then sold back to community members. Very interesting process but keeps us from having to ship it off the island to be recycled (:

I highly recommend the podcast Costing the Earth. Sweeping statements like "buying local is best" is actually not quite as straight forward. One of my biggest waste issues is having to buy premade frozen dinners because I'm disabled and can't always cook for myself.
And I know that because I'm disabled a lot of people will let me off the hook, but it still bothers me.
But something I recently realised I can do is upcycle the boxes because they aren't recyclable at all (but the plastic trays the actual food sits in usually is.)
I have begun to break and cut the boxes down and draw on the white inside part, and it works like a DREAM!
Some of the best paper I've ever used!
I'm never going to have to buy paper again.
When I fill up the sketchbooks I have I'm going to just start making my own out of these boxes.
This way I can eat my food and feel just a little less guilty.
Next stop: transitioning to more sustainable art supplies (pens, paints, etc)

I grew up in WA, in Tumwater. In high school, I would get paid to help trim back blackberry bushes for local families and businesses. I got to keep all the berries I picked and that came from trimmed branches. I'd freeze a lot, but I ended up donating so many to the local food bank and soup kitchen for families who couldn't afford fresh fruits most of the year.

I say go for the protein that comes in the tub, if you don’t feel confident recycling it you can always reuse it which you probably can’t do with the plastic bag protein. Larger tubs can come in really handy especially around the holidays when you need gift box alternatives. Keep up the good work!

So interesting and so good to hear someone talk about energy costs! It’s hard to deny that plastic is terrible, but demonising its use fails to consider that it became a popular alternative to more traditional materials such as glass because glass is so dense and weighs so much before you even put the product in, significantly increasing the energy cost of transportation.

YES! As of right now, I have leftover compostable paper mailers from eco enclose from when I sold merch. But other than that, the best thing to do is to reuse other people's mailer waste! Whether that's gathering old shipping envelopes from friends/family's online purchases or going to local shops and asking if they have any materials left over (you'd be surprised what small shops/cafes/etc. have and throw away!). Hope that helps! 💛

Awe I hate this. I can't listen to audio books because I have been diagnosed with an auditory processing disorder. (basically I hear really well but can't make sense of words very well at all) Along side that I potentially have a bit of dyslexia. Because of that I've always hated reading but I want to like it so bad because it's such an incredible way to receive sources of information. So those of you who don't have those issues please educate yourselves and get yourself into the habit of reading because it's so good for us. Just some advice don't feel pressured.

Just wondering, have you found any sustainable options for sunscreen/sunblock? I am very fair and I work outside kind of (I'm a mail carrier) but I'm not sure if there are any sustainable options that work? Thanks !

So I found at my local dollar general today I found a all natural toothpaste in a cardboard box and it's about the same price as my regular Crest toothpaste. The only down fall is it didnt say if it was in a plastic tube. Either way I really want to try it out!!

And also at my grocery store they have a little room for like natural/healthy stuff and I found a shampoo bar. The only packaging it has is a peice of paper tied to it with twine so I want to try that too. But it's kinda pricey so I might get it to see how long it last and how it works with my hair.

Audiobooks are so expensive compared to Kindle version - can't decide if it's worth the extra cost for convenience of absorption like you say. I listened to Deep Work once then immediately listened again as I felt there was so much in there - do you take notes while listening? With 4-Hour Work Week after listening to audiobook I bought Kindle version to study more closely - not sure yet what works. Have you tried Blinkist?

Hi, so I’ve actually just found something called Myro deodorant. I haven’t had a chance to try it yet, but you get a reusable case and a deodorant “refill.” I think it’ll be worth trying, b/c you toss less plastic compared to a normal deodorant tube

Thank you for talking about not having a television, I have never had a television, I do have an iPad that I can watch Netflix Hulu TH-cam and everything if I want but it helps so much to keep a positive energy and a sleep that is interrupted. I always feel as though when the television is on we are not focusing on what is around us, I think sometimes you have to take some time to watch some shows if you love them but not having a television has always helped me so much to keep present and happy. 🌱✨❤️

She says in this video that not everyone needs a multivitamin, that you can just get all your vitamins and nutrients through food, which would be ideal but isn't realistic. You would literally need to be eating very nutrient dense foods constantly throughout the day and chew each bite at least 50 times so generally everyone needs to be taking a good multivitamin, fish oil and a probiotic. Obviously if you're vegetarian or vegan you'd substitute the fish oil with a vegan Omega complex and make sure that the probiotic is vegan like she said.

I often feel like a wierdo picking blackberries on the side of the road in Seattle, but I don't care that much. I genuinely refuse to pay for blackberries. I see them for sale in the grocery store in the summer and I just wonder why. I literally walk past giant bushes that are ignored by everyone on my way to the store.

You have to be really careful picking them ^^ in my country people won't pick them because they are afraid of the fox worm but if you pick them at a height where the fox can't pee on it you should be fine

Due to money costs, I'm not able buy more sustainable items (or buy Terracycle) and I wanted to check out the only bulk store I could find but it's closed due to the pandemic and can't use reusable containers at public places. I've made a few swaps to more glass and metal though (it's worth the extra $2) and reusable straws though. My big thing is recycling and I wish that the US recycling system was like other countries or Gov run where they're properly funded across the board and they recycle all of the materials and styrofoam is discontinued and there's guidelines of the type of plastic that is made/used and if companies have to use a not ideal material, they pay a fee to fund places like terracycle to have it recycled or repurposed.
Not trying to get into politics but she's the only name I know regarding the environment, but what if we wrote to AOC about these types of issues? Do you think it'd work? 🙏🤷‍♀️

I feel like you shouldn't worry about it, your health is more important than the waste

    • @SedonaChristina
      @SedonaChristina  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Definitely don't worry about medications! That's actually why I mentioned "supplements and vitamins" I kind of mentally group them all together but forgot to mention that because I personally am not on any prescriptions. I did talk about this more in depth in my Q&A/life update podcast episode a few weeks ago though! I really don't think it's worth stressing over if it's something that's important to your health! 💛The best thing to do is to focus on other areas you can make an impact on your life (perhaps beyond physical waste and more into other environmental impacts) that are in your control, and of course continuing the conversation in our culture and asking companies for change! I also received some messages after my podcast episode that there are some pharmacies that are cool with refilling old bottles. But I had personally never heard of that before. But might be worth an ask if it by chance is a possibility. Hope that helps! x
