    i love the bulk buying culture in Western Australia (not sure about the rest of the world, but i don’t see anyone else talking about it lol) because it’s almost expected that shops have a bin full of donated jars for people to use for free instead of buying knew ones.

I have always been that person that gets sooooo paranoid that my liquid products will leak everywhere when traveling (definitely happened to me when I was younger and scarred my for life haha) and it is SO nice to not have that lingering in my mind. Maybe you heard that already or somebody else have mentioned that here (I didn't find). It seems that paper actually makes it worth for the running nose. I have this problem myself and I feel that with hankies it is way better. Probably there is some kind of paper "dust" on the paper things which comes to your nose and provokes more of a running nose.

    I bought one of those keep cups impulsively one day at a coffee cart - because it was so darn cute! I was so distracted trying to decide what coffee I wanted I didn't realise the price until the coffee was already inside it! 😭 I used it as much as possible but because it's glass and doesn't have a handle, the practicality of it wasn't great for actual use, because when it's filled with a hot drink you just can't hold it properly. As much as I liked the fact that it fit into most of my handbags, I bought a thermal mug with a handle and I don't have to worry about it breaking in my bag or dropping and breaking it. Sigh. It's still so cute though!

    I hear you on the reusable cotton rounds! I didn't buy any but I have always just used my face cloth for anything that I would need a cotton round for. I have a Starbuck's reusable cup I got for free while I worked there. I take it everywhere for coffee drinks. (I also have a water bottle, but I got that glass at Target.) It lets me keep the way I feel carrying a branded item, but I also get to save the planet more - and most places (Starbuck's included) offer discounts if you bring your own cup.

    When buying anything used, or even new for that matter, setting it out in the sun for a few hours will help to disinfect it. Then wash it and make sure it dries completely.
    It makes cleaning easier to use furniture with removable, washable coverings.

  • @finnh.krannich2431

    A note about reusable bags: *YOU NEVER HAVE TO BUY REUSABLE BAGS EVERRRRR.* Unless you're intent on your shopping bags keeping up with your beige/white ~aesthetique~, you can very easily make your own bag out of an old t-shirt in under 10 minutes with only a pair of scissors (no sewing required). The bag is SUPER durable, you can wash it easily (it's a t-shirt, remember? just throw it in the wash), and you can use it for everything - shopping, groceries, gym bag, etc. Plus they are easily rolled or tied up to store small. Make 10 of them, put some in your car, some at home, give them to friends.
    Here are the instructions: www.mommypotamus.com/no-sew-t-shirt-tote-bag-tutorial/
    Don't get too scared about the tying knots technique -- just tie knots until it looks sealed, making sure you tie each piece twice. You can always re-tie them over time.

    I grew up in California and Reuse, Recycle, Rot has always been a way of life (yes I know I am missing some “R”s there lol). Since high school I have unintentionally gone more towards “minimalism” and “low-waste.” It started when I decided that I didn’t want to buy books (we are major bibliophiles) unless I truly loved the book or couldn’t find it anywhere to borrow, I also look to second hand stores for them first even when gifting them to others. The second swap was changing my beauty routine to oil cleansing and ACV and getting more natural shampoo (I have always used bar soap).
    Since these swaps I discovered low-waste and all the great swaps that can be made and have been slowly transitioning as I use up what I have. My favorites have been safety razor and cloth pads. Still on the journey but I love having reusable plastic free (mostly) alternatives, can’t wait to try shampoo bars.

    Pillows are huge landfill contributors, and never really wash clean. You can test this by putting dye in the middle of the pillow stuffing, then washing it. An alternative pillow is down cycled fluffy fabric or clothing inside a pillowcase. Easy to wash clean.

    My favourite straw is one my mum bought me a while back which is basically a soft silicone tube with a metal casing so it bends without cutting off, but doesn't just....flop. It's foldable, sturdy, amy favourite thing about it is that the silicone protudes out at either end meaning there's a soft mouthpiece you can bite if you're like me! I also love the straw set my sister bought me from Singapore, which came with a short, narrow straw which is now my pocket straw so I always have a little one with me if I forget my foldable one or if I'm just popping somewhere.
    Most-loved product so far though has to be my new Denttabs with fluoride from my nearest refill stall. I've Sharpied an old Extra gum tub and glucose testing strip pot for home (Extra tub) and travel (testing strip pot): they've got copper-coloured teeth on the lids with smiley faces, copper edging on the lids, and 'Dentifrice' in copper around the bodies. I can fit nearly a month's worth of Denttabs in the small pot which is awesome, and they're so refreshing...plus they have fluoride so they are literally the whole package, and for the first time in my life I can't wait to see the dentist so I can wax lyrical to him as well lmao

    If you are interested in bamboo straws for a reusable option instead of metal or glass straws, I got mine from Kawayan Bamboo! It's a small business in Oklahoma, the woman who owns/runs the business has bamboo growing on her property that was planted years ago by someone else, and since bamboo is invasive in North America it's actually great because she's cutting it down to make these straws! I really liked buying my straws from here since I know exactly how the bamboo was sourced/harvested! She has a tik Tok channel too if you want to see the bamboo firsthand

    The thing I regret most is actually a useful article: A flask for DIY deodorant. However, since no deodorant recipe works for me, it currently serves as a container for shaving oil. I used my travel cutlery set only once, same goes for the bamboo coffee cup I bought. What was I thinking, I eat and drink at home all the time! When I made the swap to cloth hankies, I did not have to buy anything new because I already had five hankies. I had bought those years ago to dab of sweat, but I realized I could use them to blow my nose, too. I then got a batch of cloth handkerchiefs from my Grandma -- my late Grandpa hated disposable nose-blowers. Then there is some things I decided not to swap. I haven't gotten a silicone oven mat yet. I use my oven rarely, I don't always need a paper lining, and these can be reused once or twice, too. Not to mention that I still have a box of paper that I bought several years ago. Why throw out perfectly good stuff? That's simply misguided.

    For those who can't use shampoo bars: try Plaine Products! I have finnicky hair and some scalp conditions that make shampoo bars just impossible (at least so far). After trying soooo many, I finally gave up because I felt like I was wasting more trying to get through the bar just to get through it and making my scalp very unhappy. Plaine Products has refillable vegan shampoo/conditioner that comes in aluminium packaging. You just order what you need, can choose to make it a subscription if you want, and when you need buy a refill you check that you do not need a pump and need a return label. When your refill comes in, you just mail back your empty and keep your pump (the pumps are plastic). It's a super easy process, and their shampoo/conditioners actually work for me. They have a few different scent options. They also sell body lotion, for those who don't like the 0-waste options which are typically very oily. They have other products too, and trial/travel sizes. Would highly recommend as someone who hasn't been able to make 0 waste shampoo and conditioner work. And also as someone who hates the oily DIY body lotions

      Depending on where you live, waste management might not accept trash without a plastic bag, but if they do you could take your trash directly to a dumpster or other trash receptacle. I live in an apartment complex in Orlando and I am able to walk my trash can to the dumpster and empty it directly, but I also use washable trash can liner/inserts in case I accidentally throw something wet in there.
      I also separate my waste into compostables (food waste, paper), recyclables (plastic, glass, cardboard), and non-recyclables (stickers, twisty ties, pizza boxes). You can also take commercially non-recyclable materials like plastic film to thin plastic recycling centers, or ship them to TerraCycle.

      @@elkeshultz4496 Ask your complex manager about getting a recycling dumpster from Orange County recycling; the city provides them for free and obviously picks up the recyclables for free as well, so it shouldn't be an issue to actually get one on the property. My complex got one because residents demanded it, and since it was free there was really no reason to say no. Hopefully it goes the same for you!
      For compost I keep a small bin on my outdoor porch and add the finished compost to my potted garden. Orange County does have compost receiving as well, but I'm not sure where the drop off location is. If you can't use it yourself you can always offer it to community gardens.

    Ive been trying to transition to a less wasteful lifestyle and Ive been following your videos for awhile but I am also sortve a germaphobe and I dont remember you discussing it, but I'm curious what you do for your under garments and if you buy those second hand as well? It would be interesting to learn about how you handle that and you mentioned toilet paper and Ive watched other youtubers who use reusable cloth toilet paper and curious if youll ever attempt or explore other options for toilet paper or if you just buy a more sustainable brand? Some of these questions are personal but just generally curious because many zero waste youtubers dont discuss that side and Id like to hear your opinions because Ive been debating what to do myself when I start to make those transitions. :)

      Jessica Lynn I’m pretty sure she said in a previous video that undies was one of the areas she isn’t a “perfect zero waster” as she gets these new. Not sure I would buy used undies either, it’s probably best to go for higher quality natural materials that will last longer and degrade when you do have to throw them out?

    • @SedonaChristina
      @SedonaChristina  5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      No, these questions are great!!
      I personally am not comfortable buying secondhand undies (unless I theoretically got lucky and found someone who had never worn them and was giving them away or something, then I would think about it). I also have really distinct style of undies that I prefer (I dunno why but I know I'm not alone in this haha) and that's something that's oddly really important to me, since it's such a personal thing, like a base-layer, that makes me feel "me". I've really been trying to make use of the pairs that I already own, and wearing them for as long as I can. I try to take best care of them, and if possible, stitch them up to make their lifespan longer. I haven't had much of a budget, and most of the sustainable/ethical companies out there, are pretty pricey. So I definitely had one slip-up where I bought some from the same place I used to buy from in high school. I'm not perfect. But it's so hard when one place is 5 pairs for $27 and the others are more than that for one pair. But there certainly are lots of companies that I can't wait to support, now that I'm slightly less "unemployed" than I was for the last three years haha. I have a few of them on my "ethical/sustainable brand recommendations" blog post! I usually try to update that page as I find more brands I like and there is a section for undergarments! But I'm definitely not perfect in this area. But I hope to get better in the future! I really think that taking care of the pieces we have, and prolonging their life is important! And then I also prioritize buying organic natural materials, and GOOD QUALITY items to have to buy less overall in time 💛
      I've also chatted with a few incredible sustainable undies companies recently and I may perhaps share about them for anyone looking and who has the budget! I think that would be helpful.
      As for toilet paper, I personally use paper that comes wrapped in paper, as opposed to plastic. I'm not sure how I feel about cloth tp, and I don't really see myself trying that until I have my own house and don't live with roommates. I'm also REALLY curious about installing a bidet-style thing too!
      So, definitely two areas that I'm not 'perfect' in, but have definitely improved over the years, and I think that's important! Everything has to happen as your budget, lifestyle, and living situation allows for it 💛

  • @theclumsyprepper
    @theclumsyprepper 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Runny nose person as well (like you I've been dealing with this all my life - people keep asking me if I have a cold) and I use paper tissues. I've been using hankies as a kid and personally found them disgusting and not very hygienic. I just buy tissues on boxes and stuff few in my pocket when I'm going out.
    On the shampoo bar - I've very fine, straight hair and find that shampoo bars make my hair really greasy. I prefer rye flour and use a liquid shampoo every few days when my hair is starting to look limp. I'm lucky to be able to get my shampoo from a zero waste shop though, I refill my old bottle.
    Love the decor in the flat btw, looks so comfy and the coffee table is to die for x

    I have found some conditioner bars that I love, but I have yet to find a good shampoo bar. I use shampoo from Plaine Products or Salon Solids! Both companies give great alternatives for those who can’t use shampoo bars, or haven’t found one for them! Plaine Products are pricey, but their shampoos last me 6+ months and they have a completely circular business method. I also bought reusable hankies and use them constantly! I even take them out with me. I have a deviates septum and sinus issues and they save me from wasting a lot of tissues.

    I think the most zero waste tools in stores aren't that sustainible, because you have to reuse them so many times, that it is better to make them from things you already have or buy them secondhand. I always feel guilty if In buy things to minimize my waste.

    • @SedonaChristina
      @SedonaChristina  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I definitely agree! Up-cycling is always better! BUT when you're buying a tool from a company with an incredible mission, I personally think that's more sustainable, as you're voting for a more sustainable circular economy in doing that. That's definitely up for debate, but my personal activism angle is that change happens through shifting our economy 💛

      If you eat pickles, I find you can get them in really big jars that are a GREAT size for storing stuff that you use a lot, like flour and beans and grains. My mom also saves her pickle jars for me because she goes through them a lot, haha!

    • @kassiharris2159
      @kassiharris2159 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just keep in mind, the mouth of the jar might not be wide enough to put a dry measuring cup in, to scoop.. So maybe they wouldn't be ideal for flour. I use mine for beans, rice, and pasta, and I just pour into a measuring cup.

    ok this might be a stupid question, but how do you use a shampoo bar? do you rub it straight on your hair or does it lather??

    • @SedonaChristina
      @SedonaChristina  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not a stupid question at all! I typically rub it in between my hands to get a lather going. While I'm doing that, I make sure my hair is getting properly soaked. I've definitely found that my hair has to be really really wet for it to work best. Then I rub that lather over the top of my head and rub the bar itself on the top of my head, down my hair a bit, and I'll also lift up some sections of my hair to get underneath the top layer to get it all over my scalp. And then I put the bar down and lather with my hands as normal.
      And then once I rinse, I rub my conditioner bar along the ends of my hair (never touching my scalp) and sometimes use an applicator bottle filled with half apple cider vinegar & half water, over my scalp to balance the pH levels a bit. I haven't been ACV rinsing lately but I do notice that it also cuts down the buildup from the shampoo that I sometimes get.
      Hope that helped! 💛x

      Tracy N It totally does, at least it worked for me (wavy hair, sensitive scalp). I also only had to wash my hair four days later because it was clean and didn’t smell at all. You just have to rub the shampoo bar directly on your scalp (if you’re allergic to some things, try wetting and rubbing it on your wrist and check for any reaction first) and lather up well.

They DONATE BROKEN JARS???? I have a broken jar in my car so next time i have to go to the dump (they have a section for recycling) i can recycle it. . . . cant justify keeping broken jars. But i can justify buying my favorite marinara at whole foods because it has 0 sugar, its ingredients are good, its organic, AND the jar is perfect for reuse! sorry ranting.
