I feel like I'm in a big minority here as a college guy who watches your videos, but I just want to say that I appreciate the zero waste movement too and have made many switches thanks to you and others. Zero waste's presence online seems to be very dominated by women, which I suppose does say something about guys' priorities, but I would like to think there are other men who enjoy being environmentally conscious without feeling like their dudeness is compromised. Anyway, congratulations on 100,000!

Well, it takes both men and women to stop turning this globe to a dump. I am 41 years old father of 2 boys, and enjoy this channel as a relaxing way to learn more about minimalistic way of living. Avoiding global issues is not in any way "manly", it is just plain stupid and childish. Those guys need to grow up, but it is of no use telling them that. I am with the 100k and congratulations to the channel are in order.

Wow reading both of these comments has made me the happiest human!! HELL YES!
It really is frustrating to think that the online presence of sustainable living is dominated by women, whichI definitely gives it a certain vibe that might discourage some from making changes/relating to the movement as a whole.
I feel like the online vegan space was once the same, and it grew to be a little bit more even (however, I still feel like there's a lot more women in the veg space too). Sustainability is certainly not a gender-biased issue, and I think that the more we get the conversation going, and the more incredible and strong men like you guys who join the conversation, will push the needle for sure! There is nothing more "manly" than being someone who stands up for change. Scratch that, there is nothing more "heroic," or powerful, or human (for all genders) than being someone who stands up for change! Thank you for being intentional with your life.
Sending ya heaps of good energies on this find Thursday! x

@@SedonaChristina With the gender pay gap, women generally get paid less and are more commonly living frugal, more sustainable life. Of course, these videos tend to be more directed at women, by women. I do skip the makeup tips as they are of no use to me, but I do like the other ideas you have. Thanks for telling us about Thrive! I really want to reduce my waste, but I live in a small town. We opened a farmer's market about 2 years ago, but it's more about increasing tourism than producing sustainable food. It's also only open during the summer, so it's not really a viable option. I looked into bulk food stores, but the closest one is quite a few hours away, and I don't drive very well. Have an amazing day!

I'm a fan of skipping produce bags for basically anything that can hold itself together. So for example, for me blueberries go in a bag so they're not rolling/falling all over the place. Apples on the other hand, don't really have that issue and are easy to pick up if they do fall. So no bag for them.

The lady at my go-to bulk store told me to store coffee in a air tight jar that is not see through to make it taste better for longer. I haven't compared the coffee from a see through to a darker jar yet, but I thought, it could be a tip , you might enjoy as well. It probably has to do with coffee being sensitive to light. Great video by the way:)

UTI tip which might help; I find keeping my downstairs completely clean shaven (like as much as you can without cutting yourself) has really really helped reduce the amount of them I get (obv there's times you just forget to pee after sex or you use a soap that your body doesn't like). Body hair views aside and all that jazz, has saved me several trips to the doctors over the years.
Idk might help sorry if it's out of place here >.< anyway loved the video keep doing what you're doing :) ❤

    Something else to share:
A few people and I did a food waste event with the goal of feeding 500 people with food that would have been thrown out. We got so much food that we even had extra after feeding about 450 people.
    So there’s that...
even food banks have a lot of food waste (once again rambling )
The event was called feeding the 500 but there are others just like it :)

Oh my goodness!!! YOU ARE A ROCKSTAR! That is INCREDIBLE! I really want to try out dumpster diving and stuff because there is so so much waste there as well! And with homelessness being quite the issue in my city, I feel like if there are grocery stores (I have yet to explore this) who aren't doing anything with their waste (which is hard to believe in a city like this, but I'm so sure it happens) then it is so much better off going to people experiencing homelessness or poverty, etc. 💛Thank you for reminding me! I'd love to host something like your event in my city! x

      @SedonaChristina  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thank you! I honestly don't even know. They really have become indestructible over the last few years. I went through a period of time where they literally would just never break, no matter what I hit them on or did to them haha. I've been watching my nails for the last year, and more intensely since last fall, and I definitely see a correlation with how well I'm eating, how much water I drink, and what my stress levels are like (I think. Not a scientist, but that's what I've gathered/my theory haha). But I will say, that I've always genetically had pretty good nails (I remember my mom always saying my nails were nice as young as elementary school), and I also remember noticing an increase in their strength when I went vegan years ago! 💛

Thrive market is a great tool to make vegan/zero waste options more accessible but they don't ship to PO Boxes (which is what a lotta low-income folks have, esp those in like sec 8 housing and whatnot) making it pretty unrealistic for a lotta folks to order. Even if they were to get a free membership they wouldn't be able to get anything shipped to them.

It's sooo easy ladies!! Beware, very very spicy!
This will keep for 2 to 3 weeks.
20 serrano peppers (break off stems)
1 tsp minced garlic (i love garlic so we use 2 tbs)
Boil the stemmed serranos until the color has paled, 3 to 4 cups roughly .
Take 1/2 of the remaining water from the pot and all of the peppers pour in to blender, add garlic and blend on high until smooth. If the paste is too thick then add more water.
You can keep this in a bowl or a bottle. Remember to never use dirty spoons bc it will cause the sauce to go bad much faster!

I love your passion and your ethical values! I'm at a similar place in my low-waste journey and I love that you acknowledge that it's not about being perfect and "zero" waste. I also try my best to research the values and environmental commitment of companies because I think that's so important 😊

I love how realistic you are. Being low waste is amazing, and simply starting by cutting back is a huge difference. I like that you also note that life happens because as a college student I've had moments when all I could afford or do involved waste, or I've only found jobs at companies that have sadly huge waste but I've worked hard to cut down waste. It's important people realize not everyone can 100% be zero waste at every moment on their life, and the importance comes from trying and working hard at it, rather than being the impossible vision of perfection at it.

Love your channel! I moved back with my parents to heal mental breakdown and take a little break from my studies. And then I discovered zero waste, you're my favourite youtuber and make me want to keep on track with my eco journey! Also I'm broke af, looking for job and wishing to move from parents and do my zero waste stuff that I can't do right now. Thank you for saying that's ok to have worse period in life, about importance of self love and care. It cheers me up while I feel like a crap for not managing to finish studies when I should have had. Life is a journey and I am happy to meet you by the way. You show the right direction :* stay positive!

I love the fact that you mention that the gifts were a save. It's true. Yes, in the long run maybe the package will end up in a landfill, but the product will not. Products that are food and packaged cause so many issues when they breakdown unopened. Also, food waste is such a huge problem in the USA too, so you saved food from the waste and that's important too.

I think your privilege is showing a little. People who live in food deserts are often living below the poverty line and can't afford Thrive subscriptions

    • @SedonaChristina
      @SedonaChristina  5 ปีที่แล้ว

The great thing about Thrive is that they give a membership to families/veterans/students in need, so if you do live below the poverty line and in a food desert, their platform should, theoretically, still be accessible. It would be the case of going on their website to apply and claim it. They do also donate a lot of food as well; a large sum of that is via their customers' donations. So they use their company as an easy platform to distribute from people who want to help lower income/discriminated people as well. But of course I do have privilege, as I have never been in that situation. But just trying to provide resources and ideas for people by using my platform, if they happen to work out for them! Obviously, everyone's circumstances are different though, so it might not be available to all, but if it's available and makes a difference for just one person, then my job is done! I like putting out the opportunities for those chances as much as I can 💛 x

Lovely video. Are you joining the WWF Beat Plastic week this week? I understand: zero waste is difficult doing it 100%. I find that it is better for more people to do Zero Waste imperfectly, than fewer people to do it perfectly.

Making hot sauce is the easiest thing ever! You either get fresh jalapeño peppers or habanero peppers, or you can get dried chipotle peppers. If you get them fresh you sauté them with garlic and onion and then mix them with a bit of water, vinegar and a bit of salt. If they’re dried you soak them a few hours and blend them with the same ingredients! It literally takes 20 min and it’s life changing

Just got my first order from Thrive and was kind of shocked how much plastic there was - granted I did buy a bunch of liquid & breakable things but every single jar/bottle was wrapped in plastic. Unfortunately it wasn't handy ziplocs that could be reused but rather plastic baggies that self-adhere and most I had to rip apart to get the jar out. I'm feeling torn between the amout of packaging vs. the fact that overall as a business they're zero-waste and support sustainable brands. I know this is a year old now so interested if you have an update or if you've noticed they've increased their packaging. Thanks for being an inspiration in this journey

I am one of those families in need with a Thrive Gives membership, and while I haven't been able to afford an order yet, if you pay for a membership, thank you. Also, I have never had a premade applesauce that compares to homemade, and it's so easy! Simmer chopped and peeled apples with a splash of water and a drizzle of honey (or other sweetener if you don't use honey, just please don't use agave) if desired, sprinkle of cinnamon and freshly grated nutmeg if you're feeling fancy, about a half hour, mash that up, delicious!

Checked out this Thrive Market, and one of the first things I saw was... uh... non-GMO. I am no supporting this anti-GMO propaganda and will not finance people's stupidness. That is one of the main things which upsets me in all those eco markets and movements. Otherwise a nice channel!

For the second time in your grocery haul videos, there's one glaringly obvious thing that you don't address in this video (which makes a huge impact negating a lot of the benefits of "zero waste" food shopping) is that you drove to the store. You may have your reasons for it but I think that in a video on this subject you should explain what those reasons are. Otherwise it just seems like you don't even consider that to be a factor in a low-impact lifestyle, when it clearly is. Especially when you're buying so little. I often buy twice that at a store which is a 25 minute walk from home or I take the bus or my bike to one that's further (but cheaper). I invested in a shopping trolley to make it easier and before I had that I used a big rucksack or my suitcase.

What are your tips for low waste grocery shopping on a budget when your options are limited? I have a local farmers market for produce, but my only other grocery option is Aldi, which has the most senseless packaging I've ever seen. Where can I find bulk items with less plastic?
