Tutorial Video - • Tanares Adventures Pla...
Tanares Adventures is a massive expansion for Arena: the Contest. With more than 40 miniatures and 70 different types of villains, it takes the cooperative campaign content beyond 100 hours of unique gameplay, and adds a new Combat Role to multiply the possibilities in PvP and Co-op matches.
The PvP Game Modes (Capture the Orb, Tournament, Team Competition) become richer with the addition of the Commanders and their respective Companions. With a second miniature on the board, this new Combat Role (8th in total) brings to the table interesting and varied strategical and tactical novelties, and teambuilding synergies.
The game's Co-op/Campaign Mode now develops in a semi-open world, where players can consult an Adventure Map and decide where they want to go next, instead of being linearly directed by the story.
The Campaign runs in Cycles, each with three phases: City Phase, Journey Phase, and Quest Phase.
In the City Phase, players have the opportunity to buy items, rest, and develop sidequests related to City Structures (that can be upgraded), Relics (rewards obtained by completing a Quest, that initiate optional story arcs with a puzzle vibe), and others.
In the Journey Phase, players read a prelude related to the region they want to visit, in connection with the overall story, and prepare for the Quest, by studying what they may face (this changes according to Story Facts unlocked), assigning tasks to Assets (helpful NPCs that join the team as the story progresses), equipping items, and more.
Finally, in the Quest Phase, the game board is assembled and dozens of different villains may be faced. The dungeon crawling and replayability vibe is heightened by the addition of random encounters, secret rooms with previously unknown content, events and interactions that require tough decisions during the mission, and more.
All your decisions matter and significantly impact the Quests’ gameplay, modifying even the circumstances of the multi-part epic final mission, and determines the Boss (or Bosses) you might face, in an exciting campaign with multiple endings.

At 25:33 when you activated the reaper, it can't move diagonally through a wall, door or barricade (Rules p15). It basically needs to move right, then forwards, so it would have meant one extra movement used. It also states that if an enemy runs (other variations apply) then it can move through at a cost of 2. This also effects Grigory when he moves diagonally through the Orb at 30:29, as the Orb is an obstacle (the quick reference guide on tiles lists this at 2.4). Also the Reaper moving at 31:27 means it wouldn't have arrived in its 5 movement allocation. There were others, but you get the idea.
At 37:35 when moving the reaper, you were not sure if it was impassible terrain. The rules state that any special terrain on a tile will be mentioned on the quest if it has any effects. None is mentioned for that quest, so the reaper could move through it. Also, if it decided it couldn't attack its target, it moves to the closest, which was Grigory, so no reaction damage would have occurred.
At 43:57, you changed your mind about using Grigory's skill, and gave him the cube back, but left the skill flipped. Let's see if you fix that later.
At 1:01:21, Nix uses a ranged attack within range 1 of an enemy, so it should make a reaction attack against her. Easily fixed, as she could have sidestepped first, though that would have removed the mobbed damage that you applied. Also at 2:17:55.
At 1:09:46, the Halfling rider cannot reach it's preferred target (highest HP), but instead of dark surging instantly, it tries to reach the target with the next highest HP, and continues this until it reaches a valid target, or cannot reach anyone (rules p35). It can, however reach Nix and the Tactician without surging, so it attacks the one with the highest HP (the Tactician), and does not need to surge.
1:15:00 (ish) you forgot that the orb deals 10 damage to each enemy at the end of round.
1:41:23 not a rules error as such, but you should have moved the tactician into a position where he would mob the halfling. :)
2:24:55 when Avelum attacks, you activate his skill and flip it back to the "I" side. You don't flip activated skills back until you use all 4 of them. They stay at the +cube side until they all flip (rules p29).
2:40:31 enemies only take damage from spikes or lava when they enter lava/spikes, or they end their turn on them. They don't take damage from moving over them (rules p62).
2:45:45 when you attacked with the green halfling, you initially moved it to Grigory, then tried to figure out if you could do anything and moved it back, but forgot to move it back to Grigory when it did attack.
2:47:45 when the enemy attacks, it is next to Grigory and should have triggered a reaction attack from Grigory.
As an aside, the blue squares near each of the barrels are teleporters. Best action may have been to activate the barrel, then run into a teleporter and teleport back to the home "base."

I really like the health track on the board itself. This is much better than health tokens on a character board or writing on a character sheet.

You DO start even the first mission with the 24 Basic NPCs even before the first City Phase. They don't have Quest powers but they can add their attributes to checks like that first one you made.

I find this game's mechanics unintuitive and incredibly byzantine. I am left baffled by why anyone would like engaging with these mechanics...
... until I saw this playthrough. Watching your enjoyment at puzzling your way through all the options finally allowed me to understand the appeal of this game.
I've been enjoying the story choice part of the game and begrudgingly tolerating the combat mechanics during the quest phase or whatever you call it when the minis hit the board.
After watching how you approach the phase and enjoy all the twists of the mechanics is going to make me enjoy this part of the game more. I think it will be fun to emulate your thought processes and see if I can find the joy in the combos and options.
    Thanks for a great video.

I'm pretty sure you don't draw the loot cards until you're done spending all your cards. That's sorta important because I don't think you're supposed to know what all loot you will get prior to spending all your characters. (I.e. I know I won't have enough iron to upgrade the outpost so I will not spend my last 2 characters putting cubes on the outpost.)

Thanks Alex for this play through. Appreciate it, a tactical game like this would be hard to play on camera when your attention is divided. What is your opinion on foreteller narration? Do you think it would add to this experience?

    • @BoardGameCo

Love this game, though there can definitly be a lot to track at times. I noticed that when you missed the attack with Grigori you did not give him a mana cube. Missed attacks aren't quite as painful knowing you can nab a cube from them. I've had many instances where i was happy to fail so I could get a solid chain of skills off on the enemy/ally turns.

  • @lukechristensen3312

Out of curiosity how do you think the loss of the 5 additional health per
    character effect you?
Do you really think that it was comparable to losing a second ult for each
    character?
What are some of the other hunter level consequences?
Also I thought you had to do 32 to make them pop @at 1:27:30 your original
math was 24 and you said you only had to do 4 more damage which totals 28
even though you did 7 that still only brings it to 31. I guess the
additional 3 gets you to 34. Sorry that came in a few seconds later when you
    checked yourself.
New question how long does the permanent empower last? You received that
bonus in a previous part of the battle?
The boss ability that had him immune to the rotten bodies effect stated that
if there is another "Hero" within 6 does that mean your characters or
    characters on his team?
Can you carry and use chests from previous scenarios?
The symbols for upgrading the shopsnin town look they only require one cube and resources unless im missing something.
I apologize if this seems discombobulated I was writing things down as I
    heard or thought of them.

Loving watching the playthrough, though it really messes up the "don't back if you have unfinished campaign games in the collection".
Leaving the question of how much to get....
Can you show a Boss fight with one of the addon dragon before the campaign end please?

I really put myself in a hole.
I agreed to run oathsworn chapters 1-4 this weekend at dexlite and I have painted about half of everything so far.
I’m also running massive darkness 2 and I didn’t even prime that game yet. (So I made the decision to run it not painted)
In the next 2 days. After work and dinner I have to find time to paint chapter 3 and 4 boss and 1 tree and a few villagers.
I painted half the characters. So I’ll only have 7 of the 12 playable.
