Ah, to answer your question about why they were allowed in the casino, the Lotus Casino isn't a mortal casino at all. It's really just a trap for questers and unsuspecting mortals. So they have a casino so it won't look out of place in Vegas, but there's plenty of stuff for kids and of course it's not age restricted because they WANT to trap people. And it's not like they can be held accountable for it, since any mortal who came to investigate would just get trapped lol
To be honest, they fleshed out this episode quite a bit! They added the Hermes and Augustus plotlines to flesh out the Lotus Casino instead of just having the kids go there to crash for the night and getting trapped. I like it. The pacing can't be helped though. The way the pacing of the book is, it would've been difficult to include more in this episode and have it feel right. They either could've added quite a bit more and risk it feeling rushed or include exactly as much as they did. The same was true for the Arch episode too. It's tough because the first, like, 110 pages of the book are covered in the first two episodes -- and it needed to be that way, because otherwise we would've been sitting through a lot more exposition, which could've been rough. Then we have pretty distinct mini arcs in Medusa, the Chimera, Ares, and the Lotus Casino before we get into what happens next which I'm sure you've already noticed is going to be getting into endgame territory. So if they're going to break up the episodes in ways that make sense, some of them are just gonna be shorter, and there's nothing to be done about that. Like I've said, they've actually done a good job of adding some extra scenes to make up for it. Grover playing Ares like a fiddle last episode was another example of them creating extra content for flavor. Oh, and I've seen some talk about how shorter episodes make more sense for the younger audience members anyway. I think you'll like the next two episodes though, they're gonna be a lot of fun!
The guy in the dream is irrelevant. He took the shape of the dean of Yancy. But the dean isn't the one actually talking. It's the voice we've been hearing from the dreams up to now. But for some reason the people who filmed this decided to have the actor of the dean for this scene, even though it's a different voice. It's the same person who has been talking to Percy in his dreams this whole time so. Hope that clears it up a bit. Percy now believes the voice in his dreams is Hades.
Hermes was likely talking about Orpheus (this isn't a book spoiler, its a Greek mythology one, also, a Broadway musical, but I did always think he'd be an interesting foil for this story which you will see in 2 weeks) but Orpheus was a muse's son that Hermes more or less raised. He fell in love, but she , well its complicated, but she ends up in Hades and Orpheus goes after her. Hermes tells him how to get there and Hades offers a deal that ends tragically.
I love how you caught the thing about something bigger happening. Super important and you realizing the scale of it means they translated it well to the screen 😊
It’s Lotus Hotel and Casino, like many of the Casino’s in Vegas. The establishment is more than just a casino, many have restaurants and shops inside them, some have shows like the Venetian has a show with the fountains and people dressed as statues, so kids are actually allowed in a lot of them at least in certain areas, and it wouldn’t be that unusual for there to be an arcade or other kid friendly activities.
Hamilton jokes aside, the Hermes interaction was one of my favorite scenes so far. Lin-Manuel Miranda did a great job bringing more emotional weight to the character than I was expecting. I'm not sure why he's collecting kids/YA fantasy roles like Infinity Stones now (first Mary Poppins Returns, then His Dark Materials, and now this), but in a weird way I think I like him better in this genre than I do in musicals (which is saying something since I'm a grown-up theatre kid lol). If he enjoys doing these kinds of projects then I say he should keep on with it On a less serious note, the taxi scene was absolutely ridiculous and I loved it 😂
Maybe my opinion is unpopular, maybe I'm one of the few to say this but I really liked this episode. I went to see it with low expectations as it was another super short episode, but did this episode surprise you? They used the little time very well in this episode, I think. Maybe I'm praising a really bad episode and I don't know, but everyone has their own opinion.
No, same. This is my fave episode so far. Mostly because I did not expect anything. I re-read the chapters covered for this episode and not much happened too. So, I expected the changes. I feel like they were able to add more stuff that is essential to the overall story in a short period of time without losing the point of why they are there in the first place. It's a good episode to me. The change at the end too raised the stakes high so it left me at the edge of my seat for the next episode.
The Lotus Casino is not a normal casino. People easily forget about their purpose. It's not strange that nobody stops kids from entering the casino. Also, time moves differently there. Can you imagine how many people there are from different time era?
Love the way you explain in detail,which is really what the series is doing for non book readers. I thought this episode was great, loved Grover getting lost in it all and car sequence was great. Four coins instead of 3 mmmm. Thanks for a great reaction.

The whole hermes interaction and Percy driving the car was not in the book, but I absolutely LOVED this addition.

This was hands down my favorite episode; there were some differences from the books i would have loved to see, but it is amazing nontheless
I loved Hermes’ scene and the scene with the Nereid.
