**is this in response to the (I believe) the PKM 7.62x54mm that in Afghanistan the terrorists would just stay out of range of the 7.62x51mm and just belt away with the longer ranged ammo.
**On the bright side that should bring that ammunition cost down quite a bit.

Ah, the perfect squad weapon for long range engagements in Afghanistan.
Militaries always adopt the best weapons to fight the last war.
True, but the optics have made the battlefield longer than before, at least for accurate fire. That won't go away. The enemies of the US have the internet too and have learned to stay our of range of the M4, so there will be an increasing amount of battles started at over 500m. It had gotten to be about 1 in 6 engagements in Afghanistan starting at over 500m, FWIW (based on NDIA presentations concerning overmatch, a decade or so ago).
I personally think the US should use a "weapons locker" approach and choose whatever weapon will work best in a particular situation. In other words, use 5.56 when kicking doors, and something longer-ranged in open country.
@@jfess1911 Now now, we can't have that, it would make too much sense! Joking aside, the logistics would be a little more complicated, however, they do need to bring both .556 and 7.62 anyway, so it shouldn't be that hard to manage.
@@nate2838 I just hope that it does not take a disaster with a lot of US Soldiers lost to switch the thinking. I understand the desire to only deal with one type of ammo and weapon for for logistics sake, but 5.56 will be around for for non-frontline-combat troops anyway.
I could see 7.62x51 largely phased out for handheld weapons and replaced with something that works better at distance, but I am not sure that the current 6.8x51 is the right answer.
wouldnt that just be a 308 PK?
@jfess1911 the way i see it the 6.8 phases out the 5.56 and the 338 replaces 7.62. Basically doubling effective range of infantry units. We will see if the 6.8 works, i personally think it might be too much, and that the training ammo works good enough, but i dont know the ins and outs of body armour capabilities.

Same story with the KAC LAMG.
Why not just call it Medium Machine Gun (MMG) which fights nicely with LMG and HMG?
That would be logical and simple, understandable even - so not a good modern military acronym.
Because it's lighter than medium, but not light enough to be light.
@@DefaultProphetif 7.62 is medium than .338 would be a heavy medium machine gun
Because of thr weight. They want to communicate that despite being more powerful, it is light.
Same reason they don’t call the MPF a light or medium tank. They have to pretend they’re inventing something new whenever they reach back and dust off an old concept
The SPMG in ArmA 3 is the GD version in .338 Norma. It is my favorite gun in the whole game. You can clear houses, suppress enemy, and take very long accurate shots with the right optic.

I missed it , I've got a lot coming this year going to do on location shoot in Arizona with 8 firearms including the XM8 and HK416 . looking forward to dropping those episdoes starting in April
@@Predator42ID 'as effective' does not mean its more powerful... putting aside the fact .338 supposedly has higher energy at range than .50 BMG despite the lower muzzle energy, this weapon has a higher fire rate and much more ammo capacity both loaded and carried.
I would argue its more effective, and that the military is likely interested in moving on from the M2 in a joint effort with other NATO powers seeking to integrate .338 as a NATO standard round for their respective GPMGs.
@@V3RTIGO222Uncle sam aint ever giving up the M2, The .338 norma magnum round that has drawn a lot of attention can punch through the highest infantry available body armor, but the M2 still has its own purpose. The .50 caliber rounds that are used by the US military are hotter than civilian purchasable munitions, and this increase in powder load ups velocity but increases wear. Doing that with a single infantry served weapon is not such a good idea, due to the issues that arise from increased wear with weapon systems. The M2 was used to reach out and touch enemy infantry at extreme distances but more importantly it can punch through Russian IFV armor. The M2 can tear through BTRs, BRDMs, Tunguskas and Shilkas. The .338 norma magnum lacks that level of penetration.
Combine that with the US military-s SLAPP munitions for the M2 (disregarding the faulty rounds that scott got his hands on and almost tore out his own throat with) and you have a weapon that can reach out and touch enemy light armor and punch clean through it without requiring specialized Anti Tank weaponry. The M136 AT4 is a single shot Anti tank rocket launcher that is more effective but with a max effective range of around 300 meters (further if youre a drop surgeon with it like Jamsheed is with an RPG)
A Javelin Anti tank Top Attack rocket launcher is far more effective and has the same range as an M2 for anti light armor purposes but the cost of one of those is the same cost as easily 100 belts of 100 rounds of SLAPP for an M2.
The M2 is far more effective than most people give the old Ma credit for, and even a graze from a round from an m2 (not center of mass, but hitting the meat of the arm. Dont believe the BS of a near miss still killing. Not physically possible) will put you down, Bloodloss from a loss of a limb leads to loss of life in around 60 seconds-ish without a tourniquet.
The REAPR will blend the reach out range of the M2 and the weight of an M240, problem is, it wont be as lethal as the M2 against harder targets and it will wear out faster than the 240. Its pros are massive and its cons are bypassable, but it will never replace the M2. Dont replace what works, replace what doesnt.
TL;DR its entire job isnt to replace the M2, but to give infantry the same reach out and touch capabilities as the M2 without requiring a HMVVW or JLTV/MATV with an M2.
Ok so I know the guy that made the .338 norma... Lol he gets .02 for everyone manufactured him and my uncle are very good friends. So the cartridge was kinda a dud till the 300smk came out so it has to use match bullets essentially to get the good properties your talking about, the larger the caliber the higher the BC. If you put match bullets in a .50 it would smoke the.338, that's just a bullet change. They are going back to war calibers 😉 the are replacing 556 with a intermediate magnum and 308 with long action Magnus... The US is planning to win something 💀 and the civilian market needs to keep up before we get out paced lol
Depends on what you're shooting at.
At 1500m a 300gr 338 will be moving at 1200fps and hit with 950ft-lbs.
At the same distance a 660gr 50bmg will be going at 1400fps and hit with 2800ft-lbs.
The 338 is unlikely to penetrate modern body armor. The 50bmg would go straight through it, and most unarmored or lightly armored vehicles.
This isn't meant to replace the M2. It's meant to supplement the M240.
I knew I was getting a MG-42 vibe from this MG. The MG-42 was also a medium and heavy machine gun. The "weight" was based on the mount and not the weapon itself.
Amazing that 80+ years later, the MG42 is still largely the inspiration for modern machine guns. What an insanely well designed gun for its time.
Amazing, yeah, but not as amazing as still being in use 100+ years later like the M2.

Just imagine what damage a 5 second burst could do
It was a good and reliable lightweight machine gun - medium .its also useful for airborne divisions
All actual capabilities aside, REAPR is the coolest name for a machine gun I've ever heard
Kinetic energy is actually 1/2 mass x velocity ^2. So increasing the mass of the projectile nets small gains while increasing the velocity nets exponentially more gains.
True. But a lighter bullet will lose a far greater % of its energy sooner, making it less useful further downrange. Accurate long range fire is the key for this weapon. I'd love for a 3 round burst mode of this MG in addition to the single fire mode. I've never been a fan of full auto outside of emplacements. Ammo is heavy.
Quadratic gains, not exponential
@task and purpose I don’t want you to think I’m talking trash. I really am just trying to help you avoid mistakes with muzzle energy. You said that gun had 50% more energy. It’s actually close to double the energy.
If a bullet weighs 2X as much and is traveling at the same rate of speed it has 2X the kinetic energy. If a bullet is traveling 2X as fast as another identical bullet it has 4X the kinetic energy. Also, some easy ones to remember or you can get close enough to remembering. 22.3% faster is 1.5x more energy, 41.4% faster is 2x more energy, 73.2% is 3x and finally 100% faster is 4x the muzzle energy. This is why when looking at a slight change in velocity make sure you realize 20% is a huge.
Keep up the amazing work. We know they didn’t trust you with the calculator.
Saw this with john Lovell, crazy gun.
There are many 7.62 rounds that are 180 grain, and there are M80 versions that utilize a 392 grain bullet. It may be a tad slower, but it's still supersonic beyond a thousand yards...

I´m not sure what kind of abdomination M249 you show at 12:03 in the video, but that is everything but an MG3. Great video though! As not generally a gun enthusiast i gotta admit, this seems like a pretty incredible step forward in capability.
Design smacks of an emphasis on cooling due to its not so obvious "heat sink" like features built into the design. Note that the rail design contributes to cooling distributing heat whereas surface area roughly equivalates proportionally to heat dissipation.
It's a very interesting concept making the weapon longer further leveraging its promising heat sink features.
Don't forget AI, which are top 5 sniper rifles in the world of higher, started on a garage. Now they're one of the major players from 7,62x51 to .50 in the sniper niche.
I'm no expert but logically speaking, as you put it "Skeleton", that design looks like it would help to dissipate the heat. It reminds me of the heatsink on a computer CPU.

I love how slim the mg is. It's called the "REAPR", and is sleek like a scythe, kinda neat isn't it? And there's just something so aesthetically pleasing to me about a (bigger than regular) rifle-sized gun that's slim like a stick and prioritizes simplicity like an AK, but spits heavy lead at a satisfying rpm.
Comparing this gun to an AK is a meme it's a $40,000 short stroke piston support weapon
Simple is the last thing this gun is good at
With some modifications, this could be installed in a drone fighter to take down enemy drones or provide Close Air Support.
C.o.d actually doesnt use real gun names any more because its gotten "to expensive" for them to pay copyright liscenses to the manufacturers
13:27 the comparison between the 7.62 seems like someone in your team interpreted the metric value of the 7.62mm into inch (. 762) which gives the misleading representation of the calibers next to one another havinh the 7.62 being bigger then the. 338. So. 338 inch caliber would be the equivalent of 8.6mm. And 7.62mm would be the equivalent of. 308inch when only looking at the caliber and not the cartridge size. Always nice watching your show and if you are not sure about your next video the war between Rwandan backed rebels in DRC and the DRC government is something to look out for. Best of luck and looking forward to seeing what your next video will be
So, we are basically back to the MG42, but with chunkier ammo. Those Krauts sure knew what they were doing they designed that thing.
ARMA 3 once again predicts the future with it's widespread use of the Norma Magnum .338 SPMG
The REPR is basically the MG35 in its final logical conclusion, that's why its awesome.
It will be interesting to see which, if any, of the designs by SIG, OOW and TV designs get chosen. I would say it will be between SIG or OOW as TV seems more interested right now in developing their polymer cased ammo and M240 conversion kits. Only issue I see, which can be easily fixed, is that the REAPR has no mags, just a loose belt. The SIG MG338 I don't think will see much more design iteration in its current form
Great stuff. Like your work.
But FYI, your graphic at stamp 13:32 is wrong AND backward.

I completely agree with researching and upgrading weapon systems based on down range experiences and taking advantage of technological improvements. However, one of the great things about the Cold War era was ammunition uniformity and compatibility between service branches and a majority of allied military.
Now days we are fast approaching the point where both specific weapon systems as well as ammo will have to be replaced on the battlefield to ensure warfighter capabilities and survivability. Combined with potential theater wide logistical challenges to ensure proper compatibility to weapon systems with ammunition supplies.
You stated the the effective range of the 308 mg was 800m but EVERY time I fired it backintheday I was fully accurate to 1k with no problem .... that was OLD SCHOOL M-60 backintheday hardware. I was told more than twice by instructors that I had an obvious natural talent with a med mg but it just seemed obvious to me. What I loved most about it is I didn't actually have to carry one of these beast as Cavalry Scouts went with a lighter load on the ground. I did carry a M-203 grenade launcher but I didn't mind that and LOVED shooting that as well. We just vehicle mounted our M-60's.
