The 2024 Range Rover Velar Might Be Too Modern To Be A "Range Rover?"

  • If you're a fan of clean and minimalist styling with a cold edge, you're probably going to like the Velar. If on the other hand you think a British luxury SUV should be warm and inviting, well, you'll have to pay more for a "real" Range Rover because the Velar skews more cold and modern than a Swedish igloo.

I know the range came out first but I can't stop thinking about the Honda prologue now when I see the rear end 🤣

Great that you paid attention to the footwell space!! There are some luxury brands (Mercedes, some BMW models) that have very small footwell, due to the transmission bell housing. And with BMW chasing weight distribution (pushing engine/trans into passenger cabin) and Merceds using long inline 6 engine, on their smaller RWD models nearly 1/3 of the firewall width is taken by the transmission tunnel. This leads to awkward driving position (upper body facing forward but hip/legs facing left) with offset pedals (brake pedal pushed to the left of steering wheel/seat center line. GLK/GLC/C-class). None of the interior space specs capture footwell space and ergonomics. But in real life it greatly impacts driver comfort and actual usable space!

I love the way the Velar looks, but the chronic reliability issues prevent me about thinking about one used. The P250 is underpowered for this heavy guy, so the P400 is a must...which now makes it almost X5 or GLE level expensive for something that is far smaller & less equipped.

But it looks better? Plus Range Rover is often seen as a more high end brand than BMW when it comes to SUVs. My guess is that’s why people buy it. I think it’s overpriced by a hit for sure. I think a less complicated I6 engine would help shave a few thousand off the price

Range Rovers have become vehicles too teched out to reliably off road, emphasis on reliably due to the consistent electronic (and other) issues that have plagued them for years.

Previous Velars had physical buttons including a volume knob that was near the shifter. Now, it’s just the shifter there. Jaguar quietly got rid of them. But it still looks so good.

Just an fyi, the land rover/ranger rover maps do offer satellite imagery (including in the gauge cluster). Its simply a toggle option in the settings menu to enable it.

The lack of physical buttons for basic things I would hate. I have a Defender90 and love that it still has buttons for most things.

Great review as usual, Alex! I love Jaguars, and have been a fan of Land Rovers/Range Rovers for years. I own 2 Jaguar GTs -- a 2003 XK8 4.2 Convertible and a 2014 XK 5.0 Coupe. Bought each when they were just 2 years ion the road, and have enjoyed them both tremendously. I was considering adding a Jaguar F-Pace, for my wife's winter driving (in Michigan), but we find the sight lines in the F-Pace to be rather restrictive, especially out back, and the belt line is rather high for a 5 ft tall lady. We need an SUV that a person of shorter stature can "ride high" in and see the world around the vehicle. We also Have a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Diesel 4x4 w/ Air Suspension and Off Road Adventure II Pkg (Quadra Drive II; which in 4 Low locks up the rear dif.), and lots of additional bash plates, rock sliders, Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires, etc., that I've owned since new. I regularly take the Jeep GC off road at my place in northern Michigan, for hunting and fishing. The new Jeep Grand Cherokees, IMO, are frankly are not up to the demands that I place on my old 2015 Jeep GC. I am having difficulty finding suitable replacements for any of these vehicles -- the 2 Jag GTs and the '15 Diesel Jeep GC. I just hope that some manufacturer comes out with something in the next few years that is not extremely overpriced and so minimalist in the interior that I will need to have a masters degree in computer programming to operate the radio or HVAC.

Your actually can get satellite maps in the map settings on all JLR products, but your car needs to have internet connectivity for it to work obviously

Appreciate the detailed review as always! A few questions:
    * Have you driven the Genesis GV70 with the 2.5T engine ( I see you have a video on the 3.5T )
    * What's your opinion on the GV70 compared to the Velar? ( in general quality feel, driving, comfort, features, etc)
I use Turo extensively and have rented almost every compact luxury SUV competitor ( except the Velar, F Pace ). I had the GV70 3.5TT a few months ago and was blown away - not as dynamic as the BMW or Mercedes with similar equipment, but for $65k out the door (2022 before price increases) - as a "luxury suv" - it seems like an amazing deal, all things considered.

I think the Velar is more comparable to the Lexus RX, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Lincoln Nautilus, and Cadillac XT5 in sizing and perhaps even mission than the Porsche Macan, BMW X3, and Maserati Grecale. It's much more expensive than the Japanese and American options though.
