- The town of Greenfield, Iowa, was devastated Tuesday by a twister which caused multiple deaths and destroyed homes and businesses. Search and rescue operations were still ongoing Wednesday. The tornado was one of several reported across the Midwest, brought on by powerful storms. Roxana Saberi has the latest from Greenfield.

This is our home. I live in Lincoln Nebraska. I’ve never seen a tornado but they happen often in the area. This is tornado alley. A part of life. The odds of a direct hit aren’t that great.
You can’t imagine that they need to start building houses out of steel

Some years have a lot of outbreaks and other years are quiet. Reminds me a lot of 2011 in Tuscaloosa and Joplin and the tornadoes that hit Moore, OK (three times from 1999-2013)

Many of those homes had been there for 100 years and survived previous weather.
Build concrete homes that can resist a category 5 hurricane. Learn from the way rich people are building their home in the islands in the Caribbean. Look at the old stone homes of the islands in Scotland and how they resist the winds and storms of that trecherous North Sea.
Damage from a hurricane is mainly from storm surge. A tornado in 2011 in Joplin shifted an entire concrete hospital off its foundation. Concrete homes won't do anything.
Europeans build concrete homes because it's cheaper than timber. Simple as. North American timber is much cheaper therefore we build em like that. I still wish we had concrete though.

None of the lower 48 states are tornado-free though. And there are natural disasters everywhere. If you try to run away from the tornadoes, you'll just be trading those for earthquakes, hurricanes, or volcanoes.
