And certainly not an F-Zero Killer considering FZGX is still the top of either series because Wipeout has nothing that matches it though the VR mode was neat but I don’t even think is available on PSVR2. I’d also say SWE1R is the GOAT anyway, so really this is just fighting over silver.
Wipeout 2097 is one of my favorite games of all time, i use to compete, and I got a gold medal in Denmark, one time 🤘😎 then I got a ticket to London where i lost everything ended up at 27 place 😂 i still play every now and then
Great video, but man, you missed Wipeout 3 Special Edition! That’s absolute PS1 pinnacle and even more refined than 3. It contains stages from 1 and XL! An absolut beast of a game and easily in my top 5 PS1 games.
I'd say Wipeout and F-Zero were killed by the same external force. Racing games got less popular, and less realistic ones were hit harder, leading to a wild consolidation. Today, Sony's only racing game is Gran Tourismo. And Nintendo's is Mario Kart. Nintendo's publicly stated that F-Zero doesn't exist because they consider it to be competition for Mario Kart, and there isn't room in their library for two racing games.
BallisticNG is a spiritual successor to WipeOut on PC that's highly recommended for fans of the original series. I even play it using a Namco Negcon, the way it was meant to be played.
Yeah, playing the original WipEout on PlayStation when if first game out truly felt like they'd taken F-Zero to the next level. I don't like most racing games with weapons, but WipEout just felt great. F-Zero and WipEout really are the two greatest sci-fi racing game franchises of all time imo. In all honesty though, WipEout lost something for me after the original PlayStation X games, probably because the visual style just didn't look quite right to me anymore. It's hard to explain why pretty much all the WipEout games after those first three look wrong, but they do.
They're too shiny. I guess the PS1 WipeOut games were also supposed to be shiny, but the limitation of PS1 graphics unintentionally makes it rather gritty and real. After they've got better graphics, we can see how clean and shiny it was supposed to look, as it is intended to be. But somehow, makes it look "wrong."
What I love is you saying you are new to it . . . FML if this is your driving skill in the background it shows hahaha, I was itching to reach into the screen and steal the controller
The VR mode in Omega Collection was incredible. I really need to jump back into it. Every Wipeout fan should try to find a way to experience it in VR. It's just a shame that mode is only on PSVR 1.
Buy and try ballisticNG, is the successor of wipeout! Love to play it on the steamdeck! P.D.: The handling of the first wipeout for me is great :) I had a lot of fun with the psx. (and you can look at wipeout rewrite )

The F Zero killer? My man have you even played F Zero GX? O_o I have played both series and GX is still the benchmark for the whole future racing genre.....
Wipeout Omega Collection on PSVR is insane. Seriously it's absolutely wild to experience. It looks amazing and the sense of speed is more intense. It's a shame that VR mode is locked on abandoned hardware, but if you ever have a chance to try it, it's definitely worth a try. But leave the comfort settings on if you're new to VR (and take them off if you can handle it). As for new entries, it was heavily rumored for a while that Firesprite (a studio with a lot of ex-Liverpool staff that Sony bought a few years back) was working on a new Wipeout. However it seems like that was shelved or cancelled so that they could take over development of a new Twisted Metal live-service game which had been started by Lucid (the Destruction All-Stars devs). That Twisted Metal game was cancelled earlier this year amid layoffs and studio closures at Sony. No telling whether they went back to the Wipeout title or if it's just done. I hope there's a new game in the works. Omega Collection looked incredible despite being a remaster of content from older systems. A new Wipeout built for this generation of hardware could be incredible, and I'm holding out hope it could be played in VR. Not holding my breath though. Modern Sony is sort of the worst.
Tracks were too narrow, coming to a dead stop after grazing the edge was frustrating, flow state was difficult to achieve. [edit] ps1+2 games only, not played newer as ditched console after ps2.
The real tragedy is losing the VR modes for these games 😭. It was AMAZING on WipeOut Omega (PS VR1). I think Redout 2 doesn't include one either. WipeOut VR was always the dream. And though we had it briefly, it was a first generation, lower-res VR compared to the VR that's now available and so much superior.
Totally agree. Omega Collection actually still holds up pretty well despite the PSVR 1's limitations. And it was amazing experiencing the game that way. I really hope there's a new Wipeout someday with VR support, or the Omega Collection gets a PSVR 2 version.
Good video, but I had to chuckle when you mentioned that psvita emulation wasn't ready, meanwhile I'm playing 2048 with all it's dlc at full speed on my steam deck. Also, not sure if you're aware, but studio Liverpool went on to become r8games, and as far as I know have only released one game thru Kickstarter. That game being Pacer(formally Formula Fusion, I think) an AGR game with wipeout visuals and track designs, but a much different feel to the racing and weapon mechanics, those weapons being attached to your ship class. It's alright, but not quite the Wipeout successor I think everyone was looking for.
I didn't mean that it was nonexistent, I just meant "not ready to play most games". I'd love to see where PS Vita emulation goes (especially on a handheld PC or Steam Deck) I also didn't realize SL folks worked on Pacer
I have a long history with this series. I owned each game, with the exception of 64. I also played some of their other games on PS1, like Colony Wars (the first two) and G-Police (the first one). I remember riding my bike 3 miles to FunCoLand to pick up my copy of 3. I remember being disappointed by Fusion, but still played the hell out of it. Pure, Pulse, and HD were my favorites (with Pulse being slightly better than the other two). I bought a Vita specifically for 2048. I thought it was money well-spent at the time, but RIP Vita. Omega Collection was nice and very unexpected, but it just ended up pissigng me off more that Sony closed down Studio Liverpool. I was also a little terrified of the idea that Sony might get another studio to crank out a cash-grab bargain bin version of the series I loved so much. BallisticNG has been in my library for a few years now, and I still pick it up every now and again. I picked up Pacer when it was still called Formula Fusion, but I wish it caught on more. It felt like it took some ideas from 2048, and the game looks REALLY good, but I don't think anything will ever beat the feeling I used to get sitting on my living room floor playing XL and entering a flow state, cruising through phantom class. Wipeout was the first drug I ever tried, and no other antigrav racing game has hit the same for me since.
I had the Saturn version of the first game back in the days. I was like, 5 years old when we got it. What impressed me the most was the futuristic aesthetic, and more importantly the music. The music of that game was amazing, and I still love it. But the game was hard. I couldn't get past the fourth, sometimes fifth race. Driving the car, even in Venom tier speed, was very hard.
For me the PS3 Era Wipeout was my favorite! Just playing some Zone mode with your own soundtrack in the background was a blast! Especially with all the equalizer effects around the track moving to the beat of the song in question was a nice bonus on top! Although certain songs in my playlist required mach 1 speed in order to sync properly!
