Bass grinder is pretty good for free bass plug in. Distortion sounds good. Still have to do the split trick though to cut. This is something every single mixer goes through. I went down the plug in rabbit hole. And now I use most stock plug ins to save cpu now. They all do the same thing. Just have to do it long enough to hear where different curves and compression settings are per plug in. Tons of good ones out there. No excuse to make crap Mixes now. Good video. Those drums sound pretty legit
Loudmax often goes last on a signal chain set at 0 and 0 to prevent clipping. It might be on the chain earlier too, but it's a great safeguard against other plugins causing a track to clip.
I've done mixes with MTPDK before. I usually blend the kick and snare of every recording - VSTi or acoustic drums - with Sean Pandy Drums. I like Sean Pandy for triggers because it also has a sub blower, which when blended with an 808 long kick, works AMAZING for bass drops. Since it's triggers, I use the stereo version of the plugin, and utilize the built in reverb just a smidgen, and I don't put them on the drum bus, but on a separate bus with the bass drops, and synths/orchestra if the production calls for them (my band does symphonic black metal/power metal/melodic metalcore - tbh we're very similar to bands like Winds of Plague, Bleeding Through, Children of Bodom, Chelsea Grin's Evolve EP, or early Make Them Suffer and Abigail Williams - so we usually have one)
that said, we usually use Steve Slate Drums 5.5 Free, and I normally turn down inside kick mic and the snare top, leaving only the kick outer and snare bottom at full volume, and allow SPD to make up the difference in volume. Otherwise, a lot of our old recordings used EZ Drummer and Metal Heads EZX (the one with Tomas Haake)
awesome vid dude! I've used TDR Kotelnikov as my main compressor for aaaaages now, not only for mastering but for general compression as well. I also use the PTEq-X for the Andy Sneap trick, learned that one from Glenn
There are so many tools you're talking about from which I don't have a clue what they do 😅 So thanks in advance for your workshop and giving noobs like me a understandable guide to get into mixing! Your work is really appreciated.
I use MT Power Drums, and I'm not sure if you realise that you can output each element to a separate track. How you go about it might depend on the DAW, but the cpu friendly way is to simply record each track in solo as audio. Also, I usually pick from their grooves, editing them if needed, and each groove has a range of fills just for that groove, so you can drop them in and not have the same fill twice if you wish, depending on the song. It also lines up pretty well with Labs Percussion and drum kit packs, so I blend the two most times.
Dude i didn't skip the skip video i mean i watch it till the end that's how much i can help you being a broke guy anyway thank you so much for always creating an amazing super helpful content for us (noob),i see you're working so hard❤🎉
MT Power Drumkit and the Emmisary and the other Ignite ones where my go-to plugins when i just started, great stuff! I guess i have to use the Pultec more often, tho. I think i have 50% or more from those plugins, gonna grab the others soon. And the free stuff that`s what you`re lookeng for when you just starting out right? I think this workshop is good for beginners and the more advanced as well. i just signed up, see you on saturday, cheers!!
Just bought the course and am going through it now! I have a general question for tremolo rhythm guitars: whenever I play the same riff as a band I like, it always feels like I'm playing significantly slower (as if they're playing two strums for every one of mine), but whenever I watch cover videos or live footage, my tempo is the same. Is this something that mixing affects or do I just need to up my rhythm game?
There are two answers here: 1) The band is playing it live the same way you are and 2) The guitars were carefully recorded piece by piece and/or edited for the album. When you're tremoloing, you want to get into the rhythm where your hand moves "down" on a down beat so that it's locked in with the BPM and feel of the song. If it's triplets, then there'd basically be three notes per beat, if it's straight time, four notes per beat.
Dude... Could you do a video on how you use singularity, I'm thinking of getting it, but I want see more users/reviews. I'm mostly interested if you still use 2 bass tracks, the old high/low trick, or do you use one bass track.
In this song, I didn't use the split bass method, I just put a compressor on the bass to fatten it up with the ADHD Leveling Tool. It seemed to do the trick for this song
I know of two free Pultec style EQ's that are actually BETTER than the Ignite PTEq-X - one of them is the Warmy EP1A v2.1 from Kiive Audio. The other is the RareSE from Analog Obsession. That said, I still use the TPA-1 power tube emulator on all my amps sims that don't have one built in. It works especially well for quad tracking if you just want to run your dirt pedals from your board straight into it, or use something like the Mercuriall MT-A. I've actually used Mercuriall's suite and boost the MT-A with a Tube Screamer, and then run that into the TPA-1, followed by an IR loader. When paired with another high gain amp, it sounds sick. I've also used the free Dr. Drive from audiority with the MT-A, same chain from there. Either way, everything stereo. \m/
Singularity Virtual Bass is currently $100 :( far from free I've used these free ones in the past with great results: Bass Grinder Free from Audio Assault-Ignite Amps SHB-1-Bogren Digital - BassKnob STD Classic-BASS Professor II-not really an "amp" but worth a mention-and my fav the TSE B.O.D
@6:55 I remember that video. It just goes to show how much marketing bull is going on even in the music industry. When Submission Audio's Flatline came out, I immediately got snake oil vibes. They basically ripped off Fabfilter's GUI too.
I won't be able to make it to the workshop because of work, but I paid for it anyway because you are every single cent worth it. Hope it helps you hang in there.
Another free alternative to GClip is the 4Front W1 Limiter, along with Thomas Mundt's LoudMax. I know the video in question. It compares the Waves L1 with the Boost11 and some other plugin from Slate Digital or UA or whatever, idr, but yeah. All of these plugins are functionally the same. The GClip and LoudMax are actually open source, and even work on Linux. I love the GVST stuff. Made by Brits, Lancaster Ale and fish and chips, and all that (NGL really good meal idea, maybe only better if you replace the chips with salt and vinegar crisps and the Lancaster, save for after the meal, with the fish have a nice stout - Guinness or Murphey's... I want to eat that now, I've made myself hungry despite just having a sandwich - FUCK MY LIFE)
It depends. It is most often done in metal core with slower tempos where there is room to do it. Fast BPMs already cause problems for low end management, so I don't personally do it.
I love GVST stuff, the Gmulti so good, so light and even GDuckDly, I mean duck delay is what we need. I'm fairly beginner in everything but took me 3 months to start to see that companies are like sharks trying to convince you that the new and good GUI is better to get your $$$. Now I just spend in some plugin after really see if is innovate/life easier/easy to use with light cpu, otherwise adios.
The free versions of Modo bass 2. Works perfect for metal. Try the preset called "Teen garage", and tweak it from there. For drums: the free version of Krimh drums 🤘
I've heard good things, I opted not to use them because I didn't want to use third party wrappers like Kontakt Player or download an instrument manager like the IK Multimedia manager in order to get MODO 2.
You mentioned you avoided free plugins with installation managers and wrapers, but didn't explain why? I feel like you miss out on some awesome free stuff that way.
I wanted to try DCAM Free, which was a compressor Glenn really liked. To my horror, I had to: sign up for an account, add that plugin to my account, get a license key, and then was slapped in the face with a 3rd party activation manager that popped up in Cubase just to use a free plugin. That was ridiculous. I know there is MODO 2, but again, you have to have an account, download the IK Multimedia Manager, etc. I know there is Krimh Free, but it's Kontakt Player, which requires an account, downloading Native Access, etc. I really wanted to find plugins that somebody could go, "Oh, that looks cool!" And simply go download, install, and use them. It's nothing personal and for me I'm used to all the download clients and stuff like that.
@@ChernobylAudio666 yeah that's fair enough. I guess I see that as the "price" of using free software. But some people REALLY hate that stuff. Like I know iLok cloud is an absolute no go for some people which is fair enough.
Very nice video, but it would have been even better if you demonstrated each plugin, with audio, as you went through the list, instead of just talking about them.
Then the video would have been over an hour long and you would have commented, "Very nice video, but it's a little long and it's hard to digest all of the information in a single video, it would have been even better if you broke up the videos into single videos about each plugin."
@@ChernobylAudio666 You wouldn't need to do single videos, but breaking it up into a couple videos with audio would be better than one video with no audio. Just my IMHO, but it doesn't make much sense to make a video about audio plugins with no audio examples of what they do.
MODO 2 requires the IK Multimedia instrument mananger, which I mentioned in the video I didn't want to deal with. Ample Bass Lite has a two note round robin and sounds terrible when doing anything faster than whole notes.
That is an excellent point, and one of the reasons I decided to do the workshop on Saturday. I wanted to share my exact process, decisions, questions, and basically share how it was done. I personally changed my view on so many things!
Plug-ins certainly are addictive, though. Each one promisimg to solve all of your problems. You're left having downloaded hundreds of the Thi ngs, making you dangerously close to being one of those "all the gear, no idea" bedroom producers.
The TDR NOVA is also a great EQ, and is one of the few free EQs that let you do dynamic EQ moves.
Their free compressor is also 🎉❤ great 👍...
Absolutely. The nova is 95% my go to.
Cool video. I really like TDR stuff. The TDR Nova is a great free multiband eq/comp. It's my goto for guitars.
Looking forward to the workshop. Valhalla Supermassive is a great free plugin for really spacy modulation and reverb sounds.
Yes, I thought about including that, but I figured a lot of people already knew about it, but that plugin is incredible!
I just heard my favourite word and I'm here! Really cool stuff!

LOVE Loudmax. it has like zero distortion no matter how high you turn up the gain.
Loudmax often goes last on a signal chain set at 0 and 0 to prevent clipping. It might be on the chain earlier too, but it's a great safeguard against other plugins causing a track to clip.
TDR, Klanghelm and Variety of Sound free plugins are awesome. Also the SonEq from Sonimus (pultec style eq).
Fantastic video and great walk through. Signed up for the workshop!

The best tuner for metal is LockOn by submission audio. Also free and deserves a mention.
I mentioned that. I prefer GVST Tune because there are no ads to deal with that require $20 to remove it.

We need a free bass signal chain that works, bass is way more important than people think ^^
Is adding a sub bass to metal not advised? I know in electronic genres it is almost always added to the mix. I can't seem to get a clear answer on it.
