It didn't work very well in competitions against an opponent who used his hands more, and it hasn't worked later in other martial arts when sparring "feet against hands". G'day William Tweed here from Australia, I don't practice Muay Thai, but have boxed for 20 years & have taught boxing for approximately 19 years, I've taught boxing whilst employed in the army at my Regiment ( 16th Air Defense Regiment, Royal Australian Army ) and then later opened up my own club called Attack & Evade Boxing Techniques & have thus far produced a State champion. What I was taught with throwing Hooks was that when throwing short range explosive hooks then use the palm facing down technique - a horizontal fist, but when using a longer range looping hook have your palm facing toward you technique - a vertical fist. Because if you use a horizontal fist for a longer range looping Hook then you run a high chance of injuring your wrist I.E. ligaments & tendons. I hope this helps.

    • @gabriels32
      @gabriels32 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      this is exactly the way I learned hooks years back

    • @williamtweed6377
      @williamtweed6377 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gabriels32 G'day Gabriel, thanks mate for joining in! Horizontal fist hooks thrown at a longer range can & will eventually cause an injury... Horizontal fist hooks are for short range only, coming out of a clinch for example. Longer range hooks as stated before you must use a vertical fist, which will avoid ligament & tendon damage. As we say in my club " Train hard, fight easy. "

    • @williamtweed6377
      @williamtweed6377 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @The Greatman That's probably because they were thrown into the ring without proper training, which I've seen in the Army & out of the Army, unfortunately you'll also see poorly skilled boxers thrown into competitions in the general populace civilian boxing comps. The guys I taught in the Army were using a 4 or more punch combo system & had at least 3 months training before there first fight, as we were all in a combat unit our fitness wasn't an issue. Most of my blokes had success, the other team which we fought against was using the generic 1 - 3 punch combo system. Out of the 10 bouts we had won 8. The 4 or more punch combo system in which I still teach to this day has given myself and my club alot of success and we have won the S.A. State Boxing Comp and other fights just in general. I get the impression that you're having a dig about Australian soldiers' boxing skills, where all I was trying to convey was the proper way of throwing hooks short & long range and how you can injure your wrists ( tendons & ligaments ) if throwing the wrong fist position Hook. Instead of criticizing Australian Soldiers perhaps look at the bigger picture which is that boxing has good & bad coaches. I've seen American, British & New Zealand soldiers box & there were both good bad fighters. The boxing industry is a mixed bag of good, bad, great & poor. The Australian Army is one of the best known soldiers in the world for skills, problem solving & diplomacy. I'm sure there are alot of people who'll agree.

    • @williamtweed6377
      @williamtweed6377 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @The Greatman this isn't a tit for tat challenge conversation, however I am also " stating a fact " and that is that what you saw in Canungra doesn't represent all boxers that are or were in the Australian Army. I boxed before I joined the Army. My Father & Grandfather both boxed as well, My Grandfather Benjamin Tweed was Queensland's Southern district welter weight champion ( whom also served in the Army, and boxed in the Rodeo Boxers tent travelling around outback Queensland ) & my Father Douglas Tweed was a Golden Glove Champion from north Queensland. I too have had fights, received a broken nose had it fixed & then broken again & then re-aligned again. The boxers I've seen in the Army comps & at civy comps have both been good & bad. What may have happened was that the trainer at Canungra at the time wasn't that much of a boxing coach. When I trained my 10 guys I feel that my experience & knowlege may have been more than the other trainer as the other 10 guys were trained by a Sgt Medic who had 14 years of kick boxing ( Zen Do Kai ) experience & 3 years of boxing experience where as I had 3 years of Combined Fighting Arts training & 8 years of boxing experience at that particular time. As I said earlier my team used the 4 or more punch combo system where as the other team under Sgt Harding taught the generic 1 - 3 punch combo system. My guys were looking pretty good as they were throwing combos such as a Jab - Jab - Cross - pivoting off Jab or a Jab - Jab - half Cross - Leading Hook. Where as Sgt Harding's lads might have just thrown a Jab or a Jab - Cross or a Jab - Jab - Cross. Any way my team won 8 bouts out of 10. This happened 2 years in a row. Then after I left the Army one of my mates whom was still serving asked me to train him again for his next fight at the Regiment in which I did & in which he had won, using the 4 or more system. Which I say looks tidy to watch. No hard feelings Greatman, just saying that across Australia there are good & bad boxers in the Army. Not just bad. I hope this helps.

People say my stance and how i hold my hands and throe the jab and cross are good. Probably the only thing i remember. After that most of my HS fights i lost or i one hitted them (snuck) i was a teenager , regret it and growing up in SP was no joke. Would love to get back in tbat ring though man.

    Thumb up or thumb down is not personal preference. There's a time and place for both. Must trainers just say it's a personal preference to avoid getting into it with new people.
    You have a longer range hook with thumb down/sideways. Also a good angle and tool for striking mastoid process/upper neck.
    Thumbs up is certainly a solid match for closer range and the face. Also works well to get around a close guard as the arm tends to be more bent. Thumbs up for hooks in clinch and kidney/liver shots.
    Preference my ass

    Jisue Ortiz has pointed out a third way of throwing the hook which is palm facing out... If you all just give all 3 ways a test run you'll find that out of the "third" way, the palm facing out towards the opponent leaves you more exposed as it lifts your elbow higher than the other 2 ways. It also consumes more energy than the other 2 more ergonomical ways. Test it for yourselves.

      Again palm down for a reach or long distance hook can cause tendons and ligaments injuries in the wrist area. Where as a vertical fist for short & long range will suffice.
