    Former North American Muay Thai Champion Mike Zhang, shares his best technique to take out an opponent in a street fight.
    I recently had the opportunity to train at the awesome Critical Bench Compound in Florida. My buddy Mike Zhang was here training as well! We were going through past comments from his videos and found many of you asked for specific fighting techniques from Mike. Like what to do in a real street fight situation? Or how can you defend yourself from an attacker in a real life situation. This is something I'm curious about as well. So today I got Mike to jump on the camera to share his best street fighting move for beginners and his advice on how best to handle street fights.

    Hey Tapp bros here, thanks for watching! Big shout out for Mike Zhang for hoping on the channel! And if you want to start your training with Mike, get his KickBoxer Abs program here: bit.ly/kickboxer-abs
    Today’s question...What other training would you like to learn from Mike?
    Also remember what Mike said at the beginning of this video, the best thing to prepare for a real fight is to practice conflict resolution and to avoid a fight in the first place. A street fight can be unpredictable and extremely risky. However, if you have no choice, this tactic is one of Mike’s favorites for protecting your essential body parts and taking out your opponent.

      Actually when I was a skinny 18 year old kid... a really big drunk dude (who might of had a reputation in the area) came up he was giving my friend and I some weird vibes (motioning to punch, flexing his muscles) I was kind of in a trance but when I stepped aside and felt his arms while he was flexing and said “hey man you have really big muscles” he just walked away. Then the girl told me he was muttering creepy stuff, I didn’t notice. But use your intuition.
      I was in a bit of a trance , thank God there was no trouble.

    Formula for commenting on martial arts tip videos for maximum ego boost:
    1.) Open with "As a martial artist / trained combatant / experienced fighter..."
    2.) Write a long post humbly congratulating yourself on your abilities
    3.) Insert half a sentence worth of something everyone will easily agree on ("avoid the fight altogether if possible / don't get in a headlock in the first place / be aware of your surroundings")
    4.) Wait for other people also hoping to stroke their egos to congratulate you on the agreeable half sentence

    • @Flashlegz
      @Flashlegz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +93

      As a blackbelt in various martial arts and winner of many competitions, I'd say your best option is to offer the aggressor a drink and some money. After doing so, it's important to say how you were in the wrong and that you have had a rough day. After befriending the aggressor bid him a hearty farewell and offer him a drink before leaving. After putting your would be attacker at ease and working his ego, get a hard object that's close at hand, like a pool cue or lengthy stick. When his back is turned torque your body as if to hit a home run and win the game for the team. There is no team here though, although I like to think of the weapon as your partner in justice. It's important to aim for the back of the head, you can hit his testicles when he is lying on the floor. I suggest using your foot to do this, as it is in closer proximity to the intended target after the initial strike. It's important to be aware of your surroundings, make note of possible escape routes and assume a sprinting position to maximise your escape velocity.

      You can't ease up thinking they'll stop if things get too extreme. They'll just leave you on the ground and run away.
      Respect is dead among the thug mentality of fighting that is today.

  • @joetheragman2076
    @joetheragman2076 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Mike Zhang, you gave the best advice ever at the beginning, avoidance, conflict resolution and being smart! So many times I see situations where one person could have avoided getting killed or hurt badly. I believe in walking softly and carrying a big stick! I believe that's your approach too! and you are a wise and intelligent guy!
    One of the things that someone needs to teach also is how to punch. Many people in a fight, especially those who have never been trained fighters, throw a punch to barely touch what they are trying to hit with the punch. I was taught to aim to the rear of anything that I am trying to hit, maximizing leverage, and torque. I was taught to hit with my body, not my hands.
    In other words, your bodyweight and the torque produced during the execution of that movement was more important than just throwing the punch. That "winding up" that Mr. Zhang is talking about is not simply turning to be able to hit the other guy but torquing, just like in baseball when batting. It is the use of the hips to produce torque, hence power, with the bodyweight behind it! Any punch you throw under that torque, if it reaches its mark it is going to be effective. IMHO.

    Yes indeed! Love this counter-offensive tactic. I learned it about 10 years ago doing KFM, with the principle of cover and counter. We also train to close the gap as well (instead of always stepping back) - this stuffs the punch as you cover, step in, counter - or as they call it: Cover-Crash-Counter. It is a great patten disrupter of the assailant's attack. It really works - I started countering this way and when I train/spar with other MA/MMA/combatives folks it is very effective. Thanks for posting.

    Okay, a few points that need to be mentioned here. And I'm no cage fighter but I've dealt with several street attacks.
    1. Staggering your feet is a good idea to also maintain balance. If they're faster than you, or come in with a shove before the punch, you'll get knocked right over if your feet are squared. Stagger them and bend the knees a bit.
    2. Keep your hands above theirs. if your hands are at your sides, it can take a long time to raise them up to defend so if their hands are at their sides, yours should be at your abdomen at least. it their hands are at their abdomen, I prefer to have one arm across my abdomen and the other arm's elbow rested on that arm in a vertical position, like the thinking man's pose. You can explode from this position and defend.
    3. I've never (fortunately) been attacked by someone that knows how to fight, they always either shove followed by an attack or most often, hurl a haymaker. And yes, watch the shoulders because that will indicate which arm is being deployed. This technique displayed can be very effective provided you're both orthodox and they're throwing a rear haymaker. But be careful drilling this sequence because if they throw a lead haymaker, you're going to get tattooed.
    4. I personally prefer to move in. The worst place to be is where the punch is at full extension. In general you want to be just outside of their range or right in tight, If you move in and get hit with their bicep or closer to their shoulder, there is no power. Same principle with an opponent swinging a baseball bat.
    From experience, some thoughts I think should be kept in mind.

    Street fighting is way different than a ring for sure. Notice how he said look at his eyes? Wrong. Get distance and look at his center mass, unless you want to get stabbed. If the guy is in your face, knee to the nuts. If he's back a few steps, low snap kick to the knee. Works every time. Why? Because he's looking at your eyes, not you leg that's about to ruin his life.

    The best thing I ever learnt from boxing and the limited martial arts I attempted was how to stay calm and talk my way out of situations. It’s great to hear you guys recommending it.
    One question with this technique; How would you defend if they swing with the opposite hand. You’ll be off balance with your weight on the front foot

  • @alecboss8646
    @alecboss8646 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I like a lot of the things he talks about in this video and overall it’s a pretty solid technique. Something similar one can do is to cover up their face and head with their elbow extended just like in the video but instead of going out, you can dart in elbow first if it’s a round punch like a hook you’ll slide right through and deliver a hell of a strike to your opponents face letting you get the clinch, if it’s a straight punch you’ll still end up sliding past but you also might break your opponents hand. Going in is useful as it’s one of the safer spots to be (a baseball bat is most dangerous at the tip not the base) plus getting the clinch allows for control and if one has a grappling background it sets up some nasty throws. Still though this video showcases a great and useful technique I just thought I’d offer a similar but different option

      Jeffrey Dohnger I've been in too many fights myself really. To the point I have won from many people who competed even though I have never gotten far in martial arts training myself. Martial arts have little carryover in a streetfight, but that basic technique is something I've seen does work on the streets cause of it's simplicity. What I've seen works best is only learning the simplest techniques and perfecting them, learning to use them in many different angles/situations.

      JimmyPtheman mauy thai perspectively has a lot of carryover in my opinion compared to other martial arts as most techniques are "simple" enough to remember and execute during a fight. What I mean by simple is that you can use it in many situation and don't need a huge setup beforehand to be able to execute them unlike many other martial arts like kung fu forms or japanese martial arts although some techniques also have a good carryover in my opinion.

    As a 3 time world championship Muy Thai fighter who has done numerous extensive training with the elites in Thailand and other areas around the world, I have a few comments to make about this video. First of all, his stance is impeccable. I know this because during my 2nd championship, an opponent who I KO'ed commented on my stance. This may not seem like a huge deal, but in Thailand, it is shameful to be defeated, and as such, most see even a regular officiated event as a power play. I have a fight coming up, so I can't complete the rest of this comment, but if I remember, I will come back to it and write down the other comments I wanted to make.

    What a great video! What I really like about Mike is how he focuses on avoiding a fight and even after blocking and throwing the punch, is to disengage. I work in a very busy psychiatric Emergency room in NYC and the staff are always being attacked by patients who are usually impaired...I myself had my right arm almost ripped out of its socket (I'm 6'4", 215 lbs) several years ago, requiring 6.5 hours of surgery to reconnect the torn muscles and tendons in the rotator cuff. The surgery was successful and I am just now starting to return to the gym, having focused on regaining as much range of motion as possible. My question...what moves would Mike recommend for an ER RN to use when being attacked unexpectedly by a patient, which would protect you, while at the same time, causing no injury to the patient? Thank you Tapp Brothers and Mr. Zhang...I enjoy watching and learning.

      @number-yk3nn 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      grab both wrists and dont get bitten or kicked. XD id also recommend using your knee and calf on their chest/tummy/neck to restrain the patient against a wall or preferably floor.
      if you use your knee and putting your bodyweight into the base of their chest can be a really painful experience and can be magnified by grabbing them around the back of the neck and pulling their face to your knee.
      its also an effective way to hold them down. same with the shin across the neck, sliding down from the chest. and holding their hips down with the other shin.
      id really emphasize grabbing their wrists. it subdues their main weapons and stops the use of surrounding objects. then using your knee you can stop them from reaching in for a headbutt or bite. and work them to the ground.
      further if you do manage to put them on the floor ideally you want them on their face with their legs and hands out, not in a fetal position so work towards this,
      if you have them facing up you want to sit on the stomach with your knees rite inside their armpits. this is a bit of a rodeo but the best way to hold that position, especially if you are pinning their wrists to the ground

    As a martial artist, it is important to note that once you put your feet in that "fighting stance" you are committing to fighting that person. I'm not saying this defense is ineffective, but there are still ways to defend yourself from a more neutral footing and requiring less overall skill of the defender and are effective against a wider range of attacks.

    • @slimbuttermilk
      @slimbuttermilk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      This is very true, and that is why it is important to control the racing mind first, then subtlety try to control the situation by thinking clearly, look directly in the eyes of the attacker (using the other tools suggested in the video) and while speaking directly to the attacker to distract them, change your stance in a subtle way.
      Again you are correct, as one of the rules of war is that "mobilization means war". Not preparing for it, will not make it go away, and the initial stance in the video is one of the most unstable, and you are more susceptible to a take down, make a wider target, cannot throw your most powerful punch, and add infiniteum.
      Taking that subtle step back can create a little distance, giving you an edge and so forth. That step back may prepare you for the confrontation, and yes, may even signal that it is time to get it on. Who cares if that is construed as "throwing the first punch"? The thing that matters most, is who throws the last one.

      Great stuff Mike. I do not have much professional training in fighting, but, I do have some experience in fighting, and you are spot on, in my opinion. When I speak with my wife, or younger family members regarding fighting, I always stress that your greatest/strongest weapon is your mind.
      Situational awareness, staying out of unsafe places, and confrontational avoidance rank foremost on my list. Stay away, and/or get away. Hurting someone, or beating someone to an inch of their life is neither funny, nor glamorous. But, being on the receiving end is a lot worse.
      Many times, there is no "winning" a fight, when you consider retribution by friends, family members, or multiple attackers. You may win for the moment, but, you may spend an indefinite amount of time looking over your shoulder, so, avoidance is paramount.
      Lastly, (sorry for the long comment), again, I feel you are spot on about the "getting knocked out" comment, and being unable to defend a continuous attack. In the street, their are no rules. Anticipating, or expecting a certain outcome, can be dangerous, and even deadly. I have known of at least three fights in which the attacker(s) knocked the victim out, continued to kick them in the head, while on the ground, and the victim never regained consciousness, and died.
      The only rules, are there are no rules. The only definition of a fair fight...is one that I win..even if it means avoidance.

      wish it was useful, but talking from experience it would only work if the guy is midget comparing to you. After all 1 punch/hit KO is luck, most of the times it just get's opponent dizzy for a little bit, just like slapping ears. Don't watch too many cartoons of One Punch Guy, this is real life, there no such thing as 1 punch/hit KO to experienced opponent same weight and height as you or especially of bigger, then opponent may not even feel your punch. This tactic lacks more moves on what to do if opponent didn't get KO'd but only got dizzy, I've added 1-2 moves extra with different technique of fist hitting in post above - that will definitely help finish off anything if first combo went through.

    As a long time student of combat, and martial arts, it still boggles my mind that people still want to use the weapon with some of the smallest bones in the human body, the hand/fist, to strike the part of the body with some of the hardest bones in the human body, the head. It's understandable if you're wearing boxing gloves or similar, or I guess if your hands are conditioned to punching hard things, but the average Joe usually isn't. For mine, if you are to use this technique, instead of the punch to the jaw, use a palm heel strike. Safer for the defender, and just as painful for the knucklehead. :-)

      @marktut 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Exactly David Cobb, Punching in a street fight is not a great idea unless your hands are amazingly well conditioned. Plenty of boxers, kick boxers, MMA guys have broken their hands in fights and they are using hand wrappings and wearing various sizes of gloves for hand protection. In the street you have none of that.
      Palm strike is a much better idea and honestly not even that keen on the block itself unless the guy is your size or smaller. If attacker is bigger than you (no weight classes in a street fight) then a heavy punch like that could easily knock you off balance when you block it allowing him to hit you perhaps with a follow up punch and also making this counter attack less effective.
      Also what happens if guy throws a second punch even assuming he is a similar size to you and first block/cover works then it comes down to who lands first eg his second punch or your first punch. You could potentially land at a similar time and then it would could down to who has most power/who lands in right place and perhaps who has the best "chin" so to speak.
      Too make this work at all you would need to be very confident in your speed/power and accuracy and if using a punch not palm strike the conditioning of your hands and be fighting an opponent of your own size or slightly smaller.

    Appreciate the very sober comments about conflict avoidance and general good tips and simple strategy vs. the armchair scenarios of what you could do if you had 20 seconds to analyze the situation first in detail. Hopefully that first swing your assailant made wasn't to distract you from the knife they pulled into your gut with their other hand...
    Rule 1 in a street fight: you don't know anything about the aids laden junkie high on PCP packing heat and a knife with 2 buddies waiting to step in nearby who only appears to be some ornery person/drunk by themselves trying to pick a fight. Diffuse and walk/run away. Even if you "win" the lawyers will make sure you lose.

I guy 3x my size & 3rd or more degree blackbelt, would give me a love tap to my head, cuz i had a bad habit of dropping my guard when throwing high roundhouse kicks..i learned much more from rolling/sparring with bigger/more trained dojo members.
    But the in regards to this video, the second you back you’re leg up into a fighting stance..im not going to go for the drunken-wrap around hook..by your aggressive stance, it shows me, you’re ready to strike..id personally throw a staight right into the solar-plex..or knee the balls/head butt bridge of nose *makes eyes blurry/water..gives you time to stomp a knee..uppercut if you landed solarplex shot..kick to groing or knee.. but taking that fighting stance is a huge red flag to anyone who’s trained..& blocking like that only works well if you know their coming with a right hook/right high roundhouse kick.

    Good technique... Great video Mike... Years ago I was a bouncer in a rough bar in Hawaii ...After getting sucker punched a couple of times, I got some local advice.... There are many techniques that will stop it... but a technique that has worked for me in the past.. more than once, 1. is to slowly back away a step with your hands up, in a surrender mode, 2, your palms facing your antagonists about chest high, fingers spread apart. 3. don't say anything, act scared or startled, 4. as he starts to holler curse words, be ready . as he starts his swing, step in quickly 5. palm strike him hard right on the nose, 6. simultaneously with your fingers in a claw shape, rack down into his eyes..very painful but no permanent damage... This has, on more than one occasion, kept me from getting a good ass beating from a much bigger and tougher guy.. I know, it would be easier to shoot them, but do you really want that problem..?

    Ooh, I learnt that in taichi class too, used it a lot at school. I did not know about the hitting the chin part though, I usually just did a light throat punch. Not, much force since I want trying to kill them.
    And yes the bullies and gangsters all did the weird wide swinging punch.
