It's so good to listen Uncle Ben talking.
TH-camr Gunsmith Mark Novak has said "Amateurs spend time to save materials, Professionals spend materials to save time." And it always proves correct
Time is always the biggest expense. My rule is these controllers shouldn't take longer to assemble than it takes to print the parts for them.
Time is the only resource you can't buy more of without hiring employees, and that's a whole different problem.
@@BenHeckHacksforgot macguyver and falllguy Ben, Spencer for hire as well bahaha
Off topic. Sorry.
I think Bud was very generous to allocate so much time in this video to that guy who feeds him.......
Your videos are so cozy 😊
"Oh gifts! How can I disassemble these for spare parts?" - Ben's inner monologue. LOL
Glad your back Ben, always enjoy you sharing your thoughts and content about various things 🙂
Best to not taint this channel with more Indiana Jones content.
All of the PCBway sponsor videos mention their injection moulding service, and I've not seen anyone take it up. I wonder if it would be an idea to do some plastic injection moulded versions of your single handed controller pieces? It could certainly be an interesting experiment.
I'm sure it's pretty pricey, even if using aluminum molds.
Happy holidays, Ben. Always nice to see new videos uploaded on this channel.👍🏻
having just watched indie 5 for the first time the indie banter was welcome!
I also remember "Simon & Simon" , "The Greatest American Hero" , "Manimal" , "Automan", "Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future"...man some of the stuff on tv back then felt better at the time. Now...eeeh. The theme songs were all bangers though.
Never thought I would find an Indiana Jones channel that also goes to the thrift store to find TI graphing calculators and reviews Menards ads.
Oh, Unity, that was why you were talking about learning C#, cool.
Welcome back. Merry Christmas you Hack! Thanks for your content.
Merry Christmas, Ben!
id watch an indiana jones analysis from you :P
when he said, "sorry got sidetracked" i swore he was gonna come back around to more indiana jones
You mentioned saving time a couple points in the video without compromising cost, so offering a couple ideas.
1. Take the 5 conductor parallel wire spool and mark one side red with your sharpie instead of trying to mark the flopping wire.
2. Make a 3d printed jig for drilling holes for the Dpad and flexible pcb in one go. Might not save a lot of time, but it’ll make for consistency
3. This one would require more experimenting, and a new print. On the Dpad, you’re gluing down the PCB. What if you were to make the top of the PCB round and use some mounting holes instead of glue?
i actually liked your video reviews honestly Ben I've been watching since the show, miss the show, but this suffices, thanks for the videos
Ben I have been watching you for years and I would like you to know that you and Adam Savage are the only people I've looked up to in my 24 years of being around.
Gingers FTW!
Hanging out with Ben is always a treat. You never know what he's gonna chat about next.
I love that you actually solder the wire into the via hole. Kids these days solder wires flat on the PCB.
thanks God hes alive
That's a whole lotta mod right there... fair play Mr. Heck, and happy seasonings to you 👍
"I can't do any more Indiana Jones content on this channel". Proceeds to do 15 minutes of India Jones content on this channel. I love this channel.
Merry Christmas Ben!
You know I'm surprised I havent bumped into you at the arcade down on Odana, or goodwill tbh, If you ever see a TI with a post it note saying Ben on it, that may have been me. lol
Walking away from the limelight makes you even cooler than before
Thank you Ben hack for the new video I always enjoy watching your videos 👍
My dad did a song with Larry Hagman during the whole 'Who Shot JR' business.
We needed to see Phoebe lifting Indy into the plane.
Hay keep us posted on that quick trip fill up
Happy New Year , everyone! 🥳
I just watched a man test a blank book at 3 am.
A NEW BEN HECK VIDEO! It's a (almost) Christmas Miracle!
Easy to guess. It's probably Ghostbusters.
Wait, I'm only here for BUD
Was just thinking. Haven’t seen Ben in a while. And up you pop!
Whatever you're charging for these controllers it's not enough. :) heheh. I'm exhausted just watching all this. This would take me 8 hours to do.
"years and years of research" re the magnet, that says to me ben guessed, and it was right the first time lol
Haha I wish.
@@BenHeckHacksah, I was wrong, must be the exact opposite haha
@@steampunksystems1969 The real issue was when I would buy hall effect sensors in TO-220. They kept becoming obsolete so I'd have to buy new slightly different models and change the magnet to keep the readings the same :)
@@BenHeckHacks I think you meant to say they belonged in a museum, not obsolete.
I need that kitten project desperately. OMG. Sell that kit. :)
That customized message, we all seen it😂
Merry Christmas Ben! I think Bud is reprogramming you, in your sleep.
my maine-coone cat, Max, a couple of years ago weighed in at 27.5 pounds!
Reminded me of when Logitech would change internal pinouts of their subwoofers on the z5500 series and controller every revision so you had to make sure they were paired by revision otherwise they wouldn't work together..
59:28 lol
I miss Felix. Does he have a channel or blog? Of course i always enjoy Ben's videos.
49:57 Thank you for answering that question. I was wondering how often you have drilled into the cable.
It's pretty rare. The bigger concern is the rumble motor weighs hitting it. On left handers I glue the wires against the shell to keep clear.
Happy holidays Ben. Hope Sony will listen and stop doing those revisions. 👍🏼
Ron Howard "Sony didn't"
When you're in Frisco if you have time you might be interested in going to the Makerspace in Carrollton since they restore pinball machines there.
D-pad: I would consider using stencil and heatplate to simplify and speed up assembly
The last scene of indy 5 should have been the entire movie
also friday, just as i was embarking on a small going away party for highwater brewing, i saw cousin eddie with his rv complete with the hat
With all the hardware revisions, Sony must have an internal process that keeps the design division busy even when there's nothing new to work on.
34:54 So Gears of War 5? Lol "My TOMATOES!!"
The nee DnD movie WAS really good! It didnt really get much press.
The scene with the portal and the stagecoach was really cool and clever. Plus I've always like Michelle Rodriguez.
You can put money in the bank, stocks/bonds, remodeling your home or maybe buying a rental property. Your choice is based on your estimation of what brings the most return or maybe what you want to accomplish. If you want a nicer house or fixes issues in that house, the remodel makes sense. If you see a good deal on another house to use for rental, then buying that house makes sense. Perhaps you don't feel comfortable with either of those or think you can make more money on a CD or stocks/bonds, then that is the choice you make. The same holds true for companies. They can keep their money in financial instruments, expand their current business or acquire another company, especially if that company is undervalued and/or has good return on investment.
I vote you hit the Hard 8 :)
I found the moment I got glasses for close work. My eyes gave up.
Nowadays its "more light aziz" and then I do a Kirk and sneak my glasses on.
Ben, man you don’t owe us any explanation. Make a video when you have the feels to do it. 😊
I love to see a video of how to turn a comadore64 into a laptop but with a built in 3.5 floppy drive
How has you're experience been with C#? Id love to know. Personally for me it's such an amazing language and ecosystem.
I’m new to this whole hobby and was wondering where a good jumping off point is because there’s so much and I can’t find a good project to start with because I’m having trouble with even finding stuff to make or modify
Never heard of that, coffee drinking maintains teeth health?
I had an electrician come over to my house and he used a pair of electrician's pliers for everything, I think it was a Knippex. He was 10 times faster than me futzing around with various strippers, box cutters and whatnot.
Merry Dallas Christmas!
No drinking coffee instead of soda because soda acid.
3d print a jig for the drill?
man i wish you had the podcast still
Did you film anything about the making of this "secret pinball machine" while you were working on it?
EDIT: Oh, you revealed what machine that was at around the one hour mark.
I'm surprised you don't just grab a slightly larger drill bit to taper the holes (remove the sharp edge)... Or even a legitimate countersink bit but for like wood working. _(the one I have is a collar bit, so you can slot in your own bit size)_
Doesn't even need to be IN the drill! I use it in my hand and just turn it with my fingers to knock the edge down, like you did with the exacto but quicker, more precise, and uniform! 👍
(for the record, I usually just use a larger still bit since the drill index is usually right next to me)
_edit: Yes, Dial of Destiny has been out on Disney+ for at least a week now._
I only want it carved out on the sides. It's because the 5 wires are splayed horizontally.
@@BenHeckHacks Aah, gotcha!
I saw something about the Texas Chainsaw Massacre machine and the first thing I thought was 'i bet ben did the programming for that'
Twilight Zone?
Try The Outer Limits. It's like the Wish version of Twilight Zone. But somehow it slapped harder than Ike Turner.
The Micro Mages guys don't talk anything about loading or loading times in that video, but they do talk quite extensively about some of their methods for optimizing their game for it to fit into a 40KB ROM, which is very neat.
I don't think that that transition in Mega Man is related to loadings, as they would likely be a very small fraction of the time that it takes for the transition to happen. Loading graphics on the NES must take at most a couple frames (or so I've been told).
Micro Mages uses 2 static ROMS (32k code and 8k graphics) As for Mega Man, if you run it in an emulator with the pattern viewer you can absolutely see the loading process. It's pretty fast, but it's still loading :)
"Except for the Sun blowing up." Clearly Ben has not seen the film Sunshine...
Ordered my first Pcbway project yesterday… their manufacture time is in 2weeks and board assembly a month! That sucks! Jlpcb has been much better turn a round
it's not a rumor! there were reshoots
So did you ever find out if you get charged extra, or they even allow you to use that cup?
Haha not yet! I'm more worried what happens if I drink 40oz of coffee!
Very true Sir!@@BenHeckHacks
Oh man, yea, that original Dungeons and Dragons was on a whole new level of bad... 😅
And the *best* part is, is that Uwe Boll considers himself as god's gift to the film industry, and we just don't know enough about filming to recognize his greatness... 🤣🤦♂️
Yes, do the indy 5 review. The biggest problem was definitely the editing. Also they should have worked his age and fish-out-of-water old man in a changing world to the movies benefit.
Unity is not all that bad, I would check out Godot if I were to get back into it. The problem I have with unity is that the gameplay problems are infectious, 2 games from different studios will have the same issues because they both imported the same UI framework for example, for me its always the scroll wheel input barely scrolling the UI
Question for anyone here: do you have a recommendation for a youtube channel about building projects on PCBs like Ben used to do with his portable consoles? I really like Adrian's Digital Basement and Epictronics, but these are mostly about repairs. I learned a lot from Ben years at TBHS and I'm hungry for more :)
I need a giant plate of fried chicken
Hi Ben
Ben i have a bunch of xbox controllers and a ps5 mainboard with a botched hdmi port that im still practicing to fix that you can have. Ill ship it to a po box if you want. No strings attached.
What model Xbox controllers?
@BenHeckHacks 360, and a few from the last 2 generations, the Duke reissue, ps4 and 5 controller parts, batteries, repair parts. That ps5 mainboard you can have. I assure you it works but needs some hdmi trace work. I've been practicing my soldering skills by fixing retro consoles for people and learning the theory of how circuits work and such. I have a software engineering degree that I never used but always wished I had taken ee instead. I've been fixing guitars and old gear for years and I bought an arduino kit about 5 years ago which snowballed into me learning to code again and accumulating gear and donating alot to my local makerspace or anyone who wanted to learn in Canada or the us that I met online. I would send them kits tailored to their interests.
I have a ton of atari games you can have as well. All the classics like river raid, mouse hunt haha.
I'm surprised you've never mentioned that most big budget game characters look like left wing python coders from Facebook.
I wrote alot of c and c++ when I was younger and was surprised that the new generation all write js and python now. I concentrated on pointer arithmetic and advanced data structures when I got back into it and the new way most people write applications surprised me. I took a Java applet course the year the big jvm push was new before the dofcom boom and even the prof (who had a math and engineering dual phd) hated how clunky it was and just passed everyone. AltaVista was still big when I graduated haha. Mirc was huge and everyone used the dalnet server and rtfm was a common attack on beginners. It killed me. News groups had yet to be policed properly and it was common knowledge that pedos held them together and you had to be careful which one you went on because the names were deceiving. Looking for a certain doom wad file and. Well I need not say more.
Anyway, I'll throw in the still in box duke reissue controller as I figure you'll appreciate it more or hack the little round oled screen under the button haha. Same with the ps5 mainboard, heatsink, fan and such if you like. My TV recognizes the ps5 (which is on my old isp ssid) and the disc spins and there are no beep codes. If you think it's worth your time down the line.
Do you know how to do raspberry pie project’ I’m trying to do a NAS on my Raspberry PI Zero 2W and I want to access it from anywhere using the internet.
also ben, if you're having trouble with light and reading, may want to get checked for cataracts

Stripping wire with your teeth is a right of passage for all makers who start with nothing more that an iron and a multimeter.
TH-cam's algorithm is the worst for recommending anything... if you deviate from your core audience, TH-cam basically penalizes you. If your content is garbage though, TH-cam will be the first to recommend it. lol
Yup. It's why YT will never let AVGN become RLM even though he clearly wants too. It's dumb.
@@BenHeckHacks Yeah, it's almost like you have to create a brand-new channel just to have a hope and a prayer with YT's algorithm. Honestly, AVGN should just try that instead. It sucks how YT works. It's getting harder and harder for content creators to exist on this platform.
Mr. Heck
Are you going the the world pinball championship hosted in Riverside CA ?
It always surprises me how low quality some of your 3D prints look that you use on your projects. Especially for someone who has been 3D printing for so long. I guess if it works, then why not, but it still surprises me.
Do you have a formal education? From where? I went the distance in math, 12 yrs. You are so bright. I learned unix on a Next. FORTRAN,Lisp, ada,C, pascal, and?.? My paper was on compiler const.
I disliked "Dallas" because I kept wishing Barbara Eden would show up but sadly she never did. "Master, where is Major Healey? And why are you wearing a five-gallon hat?"
Hi Ben. Have you seen the Video from champutee? He's a young man who lost one arm a few month ago and he uploaded a viral video here where he shows his frustration about multiple flawed designs for one handed gaming controllers which were send to him by an university. This man apparently never has heard about your designs.
Where's Bud?
indiana jones 5 was delayed for over a year and reshot to shit and back after the leaks. john freaking williams confirmed some changes. you’d have to be dumb not to believe the leaks with how well they line up with the final
film.
They lobbed off the 4chan ending but were stuck with a time travel plot. So they added the "continental drift" excuse (which is stupid, a few centimeters since then, at most) and most telling, all the Nazis just die off-camera in a plane crash. Where's the trademark "Grisly End" for the baddies?
You way too kind to dnd. Oh your a wizard I've known for years I don't understand how magic works. Can you explain to me what it is you do.
Interesting topic
Jeri Ellsworth is one cool Babe.
ben did you ever watch ultraman?
Producer: Mr ford do you want to do indy 5,
FORD: No,
producer: we will kill you off at the end.
Ford: no
Producer: we will kill you off twice
Ford: ok i'll do it
You want a free non working gameboy pocket or what?
