In this video I teardown a couple of my latest Menards finds and also ramble on quite a bit about movie plots, Hero's Journey and my pitch for "Revenge of the Jocks"
Revenge of the Jocks is definitely a movie that's going to happen and we can all reference this video when the Ben Heck v Movie Studio lawsuit makes headlines.
Chevy Chevettes (and variants) sold 7 million examples and remained in production for over 20 years. It's one of the most successful vehicle platforms ever produced and no one ever confused it with a Corvette. 😁
Those sunglasses are for activities such as running where these sorts of tech are popular as they allow your ears to be unobstructed for hearing traffic. I wear headphones that sit in front of my ears and project sound back at them to keep me fully aware of my surroundings.
I bought a Bluetooth FM transmitter for my car and it USES THE SAME voice. I hear that guy tell me “The Bluetooth Device is Ready to Pair” every time I get in my car…. “Paired”. Hearing it on this video was like hearing a friend’s voice on TV.
Elevator pitch: Jock marries highschool sweetheart, nerd had a crush on her. Nerd goes on to be a Jeff Bezos type figure, jock ends up working for him in Amazon-style warehouse. Nerd visits warehouse, recognizes jock, slightly awkward reunion, invites him round for dinner. During dinner nerd humiliates jock for being poor/stupid/whatever, and then some sort of heist/scam/con ensues using jock's wife as bait.
You give the manufacturer far too much credit with that RGB LED on the Bluetooth speaker. AP(A)102 would cost them much more, and they're totally unnecessary if you only have one pixel. But thanks to your nice close-up shot, we can see it's just a cheap 5050 RGB LED. Look closer, no IC in there. Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed the teardown and stories.
I'm helping. Not necessarily with their electronics tat...though I've bought some of that, too. I actually did get a reasonable set of Bluetooth earbuds from there for $5. The one thing I can't figure out is...why I have to always put the left earpiece in to the charger case first, otherwise the whole pair won't charge.

What a cool product those glasses are. I always wanted to wear a lithium battery of dubious quality to the side of my face. What could go wrong? 😁 IIRC in Revenge of the nerds II, the nerds were already kind of successful. Revenge of the jocks will never happen due to the current PC climate in the US. It would probably become a 2 hours lecture against bullying (useful, although it would be attached to the wrong medium).
Those sunglasses would have been way cooler if they had the mirrors on them on the edges. You know that's something I never ask my optometrist about if I can ever get on a pair of glasses. I actually like the side mirrors to a degree.
I needed this video to be about 4 times as long so the layers of Ben's sanity could continue to wain. I needed fully fleshed out side plots and singing. Oh we'll see you later *hops in chevette*
That was smoke from the wires, not magic smoke. Wire smoke is well understood. The magic smoke is what would have come out of the battery if you kept shorting it.
I would watch Revenge of the Jocks. I kept saying, "Cobra Kai! It's Cobra Kai! You're describing Cobra Kai," while you were describing the concept. Glad you got there. I would have been so frustrated if you hadn't.
When you were talking about the hero's journey my wife (who has a masters in literature) was impressed as apparently no one ever really talks about that in terms of reviewing movies or books any more.
I think it goes deeper than Hero's Journey. Effective storytelling is a metaphor for the human experience, for life, love and death. Hero's Journey is like a guide, a scaffolding to build a story upon to ensure it hits the correct marks.
The evony ads always drive me up the wall because they purposefully lose when the win strat is obvious af. Keeps me thinking about it though. So it’s decently effective advertising. Not that I’ll ever download it but I do think about it.
The actual car was the Chevell. The point of a _Chevette,_ was that there was a period of time when the Chevell was in production, _and_ it was using a computerized engine that was _also_ used by the Corvette _with a different controller chip that gave better performance._ So people would buy a Chevelle, get insurance that was cheaper _because_ it was a Chevelle instead of a Corvette, and then swap the Corvette chip into the Chevelle, so that they'd have the performance of a Corvette with the insurance cost of a Chevelle.
I like the revenge of the jocks idea. It could be The Rock beating up Mark Zuckerburg. Could have a monologue about how he doesn't want to comply to the metaverse. Then gives him the rock bottom. Roll credits.
Outside of conventions I don't get recognized that often IRL. Maybe 3 or 4 times a year. But for some reason it's always at Menards or, don't know why, Olive Garden.
Re: "Why would you want a speaker in your glasses?" It makes a lot more sense if it's regular glasses, or something you wear everyday. Headphones pinch my ears against the feet of my glasses and that hurts me, and ear buds aren't comfortable for long wearing periods (even the memory foam ones). Bluetooth built-in to my RX glasses would be awesome. (Maybe not $300+ awesome, but I would definitely pay a little bit extra for something like that in the standard nerdy plastic frames.)
Looks sorta similar to an "LED Light up bluetooth speaker" I got from 5 Below 2 yrs ago! Multicolor led that also works as a night light in my bathroom. I have it connected to a Samsung Tablet I use for reading during my "Sit Down". Still working and I love the color changing lights!

Ben usually when I watch TH-cam videos about technology or programming then TH-cam serves me up some ad beforehand about technology or programming... but today, and I do hope that you see the funny side of it, the ad was about some potion that helps you if you are impotent... Google must know something about one of us that perhaps we don't even know yet... Anyway, great video as always. Love seeing you get cheap stuff and tear it apart and modify it and reuse bits... miss the Ben Heck show like crazy, those were some great years...
I can understand the speakers on glasses in theory : I can't bear closed headphones, or earbuds (if I have anything in my ear it gets irritated right away). So I use bone conduction headphones, which can get really expensive. Having speakers close to my ears but not making contact would be a cheaper compromise. Also gets rid of the issue of using speakers and glasses at the same time. But putting bad speakers in bad glasses doesn't help.
Mentioning snow glare, my main 'allergy' season growing up in Michigan was the winter. All of the sun light bouncing off of the snow always had me sneezing.
I feel your pain. What really sucks even more, is when popular TV shows get cancelled after a huge season finale. I wonder how many crimes of passion can be linked to the twisted mental anguish this has caused. Seriously, directors should go to jail for leaving us hanging like this! Same with movies, though I suppose modern movies are mostly just very long TV shows, with one episode per season.
Make it where the Nerd came back into town for his mother's death and seen the jock as a manager somewhere but the Nerd had so many companies he didn't know he owned the company the jock worked at and the nerd's even nerdier evil assistant mentions in passing that the Nerd owns the conglomerate that owns the multinational corporation that owns a suite of companies which the company that the jock works at like say a tire recycling factory which would be the exact opposite of a tech company owned by the nerd. This would be why neither knew, even though they had a history but by taking away the jock's livelihood away from him has a knock on effect of half the town loosing their jobs. BOOMMMMMMMM!
My mom wrapped a 1982 Chevette around a telephone pole to avoid hitting a cow in the road. Wonder if hitting a cow would also push the motor thru the firewall?

@Lassi Kinnunen 81 Yes even the cow would have been bad that firewall was pretty thin and pushed into the center of the cab pretty far but luckily she walked away. Wow Chevette curb weight is around 1843-2035 pounds and a grown Holstein is about 1500 pounds. Mom chose well!
the glasses are for walking, earbuds do block off some if not most surrounding sound. meaning hearing traffic and people can be problematic. its the same setup that the quest does for passive audio. its weird, but it makes sense in context. even in an office setting this would work.

haha NE here also, Job Lots (north east area chain store), 5 Below, and Big Lots don't have cool things like Menards, I'm jealous of Ben. However we do have "you blew it electronics" where you blow your budget, or the project; whichever comes first.

Catching up on your videos. I have just replaced my first Gen Pixel XL this that i've had since the first month it was available in the UK. Its still works fine but the battery doesn't last half a day now
My wife got me the actual Bose sunglasses (they exist) for Xmas. They are cool, and they do sound great, and friends and family agree. But I am still not sure of the use case. I wear sunglasses in the car, but the car has a stereo so I don't really need the speakers. And sunglasses don't make sense indoors. So they only work for being outdoors in an environment where you're not worried about getting run over by a car. At the pool or mowing the lawn with my electric mower perhaps.
While those cheap sunglasses aren't going to be great, a decent set use bone conduction. I also have a set for Bluetooth neck speakers that are actually really nice. They're for situations where you need to hear your surroundings. Things like cleaning up around the house where you're going from room to room. I also have an electric lawn mower and can do the lawn and listen to an audio book or work on landscaping or a garden.
They also flipped the hero/villain thing with the Emma stone "Cruella". Not necessarily the kind of movie I'd normally watch but I thought it was actually pretty good (though I'm generally the least critical critic)
I hope NTTD becomes the canonical ending of the James Bond character. Casino Royale is the canon beginning, so it'll be interesting to see if future movies are placed within the timeline.
1. Yes, you can get Bluetooth speakers at thrift stores for 5 dollars. Yes, you need to be very very lucky. 2. Time for me to start a "cheap junk from Big 5" series. Big 5 is another one of those stores that sells cheap electronic junk for no reason (and they're a sports store!).
I've got a crap hack idea for you - we got a diaper sensor for our newborn that (in theory) tells us when she's wet her diaper. The thing's BTLE connection craps out all the time and the app is pretty bad at automatically reconnecting. But, it's basically got a humidity sensor, temperature sensor, and bluetooth chip all in a single board powered by a cr2032 battery, for $50. Maybe you could use it for plants or a weather station or some weird game.
Or "Friend Face" the social media app in the UK comedy series The IT Crowd. I love the episode where they have a black box with a flashing LED in it and inform Jen their manager that the box is "The internet". She has to do a presentation to the upper managers on what the internet actually is and takes the flashing black box. Hilarious.
Speakers near your ears can be useful for long bicycle rides, they dont cover your ears so you can hear your surroundings, I wouldnt buy those sunglasses though, I have a bicycle helmet with the speakers built into it.

Surprised the battery didn't short when he cut through the nose bridge. So many young players cut through both leads simultaneously.
I'll never forget the first time I had to swap out a connector on a freshly charged lipo pack and just snipped both wires at once..

There is also a tiny microphone on the PCB of the glasses. (15:17 and pause, next to BT-chip). I think it is made to make a phonecall when driving.

Barely. I believe the battery reports level erroneously under 30%. Very often I'll snap a photo while something else is happening and it hard resets.

"Bose" actually makes/made Sunglasses with speakers as well. And they are actually quite good from what I hear.

I wear sunglasses in the car, but the car has a stereo so I don't really need the speakers. And sunglasses don't make sense indoors. So they only work for being outdoors in an environment where you're not worried about getting run over by a car. At the pool or mowing the lawn with my electric mower perhaps.
While those cheap sunglasses aren't going to be great, a decent set use bone conduction. I also have a set for Bluetooth neck speakers that are actually really nice. They're for situations where you need to hear your surroundings. Things like cleaning up around the house where you're going from room to room. I also have an electric lawn mower and can do the lawn and listen to an audio book or work on landscaping or a garden.
We used to have Chevettes in the UK (I think they were from GM's UK subsidiary, Vauxhall), affectionately known as Shove-its.

I kinda wanted to hear how the glasses sound. It looked like it would have a reasonable speaker. (Kinda like a smartphone boombox speaker)
They also flipped the hero/villain thing with the Emma stone "Cruella". Not necessarily the kind of movie I'd normally watch but I thought it was actually pretty good (though I'm generally the least critical critic)
I hope NTTD becomes the canonical ending of the James Bond character. Casino Royale is the canon beginning, so it'll be interesting to see if future movies are placed within the timeline.

2. Time for me to start a "cheap junk from Big 5" series. Big 5 is another one of those stores that sells cheap electronic junk for no reason (and they're a sports store!).
I've got a crap hack idea for you - we got a diaper sensor for our newborn that (in theory) tells us when she's wet her diaper. The thing's BTLE connection craps out all the time and the app is pretty bad at automatically reconnecting. But, it's basically got a humidity sensor, temperature sensor, and bluetooth chip all in a single board powered by a cr2032 battery, for $50. Maybe you could use it for plants or a weather station or some weird game.

Speakers near your ears can be useful for long bicycle rides, they dont cover your ears so you can hear your surroundings, I wouldnt buy those sunglasses though, I have a bicycle helmet with the speakers built into it.
