- Donald Trump has said he would "encourage" Russia to attack any Nato member that fails to pay its bills as part of the Western military alliance.
Trump said he had once told a leader he would not protect a nation behind on its payments, and would "encourage" the aggressors to "do whatever the hell they want".
Members of Nato commit to defend any nation in the bloc that gets attacked.
The White House called the comments "appalling and unhinged".

France is the ONLY country in NATO that is truly independent from USA. They develop all their military equipment, from fighter jets to aircraft carriers to submarines, on their own. That is why France often does not vote according to usa in UN while all other countries have to. They knew from the beginning that USA cannot be trusted. After all, it was said by a US foreign secretary that being an enemy of USA is dangerous, but being a friend is fatal.

Paying 2% of every members defense budget was signed by every members upon it's creation. An alliance without cooperative members is not an alliance at all also by paying for defense budget it would help the alliance to do drills and other alliance related stuff they want because nothing is free. Poor members who has no capability to sustain large forces or built military assets for home defense can gained almost free commitment by other NATO members as they are obligated to help each other in times of needs.
Many poorer NATO Members gained soo much advantages by just paying 2% of how much GDP that particular country gets every year, so instead of building up forces and sustaining military equipment they can get them for free from other members who will protect that country from it's enemies.
Its a win/win situation for the both sides why because no matter how big or small a weaker and poorer member country has for their GDP they only need to pay a 2% from that GDP and it's not a fix price.

As your neighbour, we have never paid much in times of peace but we always have punched above our weight when push comes to shove. NATO member state's contributions to the alliance should be an issue we all care about, but one to be discussed at length behind closed doors. In public, it should be a united front, & any sane politician in any NATO state should take this position or otherwise it undermines collective security & the troops like you were. Every NATO member should indeed meet the target to spend at least 2% of its GDP on defence, especially in these times of rising tensions; however, even to express hesitancy about the obligatory nature of the organisation's mutual-defence clause weakens its deterent value. For a US president to voice *encouragement* for an enemy to attack a member of the alliance turns the US into a fifth column within the alliance. Were NATO a single country, such behaviour would constitute treason.
But if those countries are not going to buy military equipment to help make NATO, then why should they be in NATO? They need to leave NATO and fend for themselves. Belgium only has 35 tanks, and a few planes. Denmark has about the same or less. They have plenty of money to spend on free college, free healthcare and free sex changes, but not their military. They have depended on US taxpayers to cover that expense. Leader of Denmark told Trump they can't pay 2% because it would bankrupt their welfare state.
It is one thing to withdraw from NATO - thereby potentially endangering Europe. But is is quite another thing to encourage war, after having withdrawn from NATO - thereby actually endangering Europe.

Yes, it's hard on everyone when the 2% is missed, but it's worth remembering:
1. Some countries pay more than 2% (Greece, Poland, UK…)
2. The 2% is arbitrary and doesn't reflect the needs of all countries/regions (eg Canada)
3. The US spent decades building this alliance in its own image and for its own purposes (like NATO standards meaning these counties buy their equipment from US companies)
4. The US enjoys making decisions and calling the shots, which is possible because they are supporting the alliance. A NATO without the US would be a powerful global player outside and potentially in conflict with the US
5. Ask any US general what their biggest asset is (and what China doesn't have) and they will tell you every time the leverage and force multiplier of their allies - it boosts global footprint, technology, and delegation
6. Article 5 was invoked once and only once, and it was by… the US after 9/11. And everyone answered the call.

Regardless of what trump has said, NATO members pledged to commit 2% of gdp to defense spending. Only 11 member states hit this mark in 2023 and there has never been a year where even half the members hit 2%. The US has never missed it. As a US citizen and taxpayer i have no issue with our country contributing more than others, but id like to see all NATO members meet the commitment that they all agreed to.
EU has so many countries with very high military capacity and even Nuclear Weapons. So Why do they have to depend on the US???

America is not funding NATO. NATO does not have a central budget. Everybody is funding their own defence including the US. In fact, most NATO allies buy US equipment, allowing US to MAKE money. What Trump is basically saying is that he does not 'want' to be allies with countries that pay less than 2% of their GDP on defence. Pretty arbitrary and not in the long-term interest of the US. What do you think happens to the small European states who cannot rely on allies? They're forced to ally with Russia/China, who actively work against the US interest. As always, Trump's short-sightedness and ignorance on full display for all to see.
