Here the comparison was more about the rock that shocked & offended the 50's prim & proper middle/upper class population. (Generally speaking. IDK why it would have to be "white" but helped make his point with the 2nd part of his statement. There were famous exceptions in every music genre.)

In 1993, it was true. Today, not so much. Bowie always had his finger on the pulse of interesting movements in music and art. Whether creating it himself or admiring that of others, he remained keenly aware of what was the current state of art and music. Nearly 30 years later, Hip Hop is further away from that incomparable era as Rock and Roll was from the late 60’s at the time this was recorded.

Best live performance he ever did was probably live at mantra studios in Chicago with Iggy Pop circa 1977 and even then I’d say his vocal delivery was so soft and quiet for some reason. Iggy pop really outshined him. As the years went on the coke really affected his singing abilities. A lot of times even having to drop keys. Love the mans studio work though. Every to charting artist is a sellout in some way. If you're looking at the top 40 you're gonna find shitty music, but a lot of good rap music has been made in the underground and experimental rap scene. Albums like The Money Store by Death Grips, Some Rap Songs by Earl Sweatshirt, War In My Pen by MIKE, Veteran by JPEGMAFIA, Little Dominique's Nosebleed by Koreatown Oddity, etc are really quality and not "sellout". Even some popular rappers have released some great work. (Igor by Tyler The Creator, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West, To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar, etc.)
